To ask how I stop bloody coughing??

Had a cold since Thursday, seemed to be a bit better today.
Have come to bed and I literally cannot stop coughing. My chest hurts but nothing comes up. I’m drinking fluids but my chest really hurts.
Tell me how I can go to sleep.

Throat sweets worked for me just don’t fall asleep whilst sucking one (as I did)

Goawayquickly · 03/11/2019 03:39

Same here. I'm propped up on extra pillows which helps, have cough sweets, windows open a little and paracetamol for the rib pain.

fortunatelynot · 03/11/2019 03:39

That sounds worrying. I will have to get some tomorrow. I have work Monday and need my sleep!

Poor you Goawayquickly. I’m surprised I feel like this as my cold seems a bit better.

My cough also came after the cold symptoms eased. I need sleep but can't drift off again. Extra pillows do help though, lying down makes me worse.

avamiah · 03/11/2019 03:48

I took Covonia cough medicine and it worked for me but if your chest hurts then I would get a out of hours GP appointment .

fortunatelynot · 03/11/2019 03:49

I’ve found some lemsips. My chest feels tickly and sorry to be crude, nothing is coming up.

Vicks on the soles of your feet. Socks on

custardbear · 03/11/2019 03:51

After having whooping cough last year I found sleeping propped forwards on the sofa kind of slanted upright facing downwards over back of sofa was best way to sleep - good luck

chesterfuckingdraws · 03/11/2019 03:51

Do you have any vicks vaporub? Put some on your feet with thin socks (like you do for babies/small kids) I find it helps massively and if you can have a bowl/jug of hot steamy water at the side of your bed to stop the aid drying out.

I'm awake with the same symptoms and just necked some night nurse clearly I'm not following my own advice

avamiah · 03/11/2019 03:53

Yes lying down made me cough more, I was coughing all night.
I eventually fell asleep after taking covonia cough medicine and paracetamol and a huge glass of milk.

fortunatelynot · 03/11/2019 03:53

How does Vicks on your feet help?!! I’ve never heard of doing that.
Custardbear, you poor thing, it must have been awful.

If it persists, go get it checked it out. I had the same and had suspected pneumonia (felt perfectly fine, just the cough) which turned out to be pleurisy instead.

Nat6999 · 03/11/2019 04:05

Wet towels on your radiators to keep the air moist, a tissue with either Olbas oil or Vick inside your pillowcase, don't drink citrus fruit or milky drinks, small sips of water, ice lollies are good. Something like Night Nurse to enable you to get some sleep, don't take normal cough medicines, the minute you stop taking them, the cough comes back.

custardbear · 03/11/2019 04:05

@fortunatelynot - yes it was awful, slept like that for around 10 days I think - coughing meant vomiting though, so I tried everything not to cough lol

fortunatelynot · 03/11/2019 08:55

Poor you Sheilabruce.

I managed to doze off for an hour or so then had another coughing fit. I’m exhausted.

I’ve never taken night nurse but might need to with work tomorrow.

Agree with vicks on feet and socks. If cough continues more than week go back to dr, last Christmas I had chest problems I went on antibiotics but cough remained I carried on working big mistake it got worse and dr told me off for not going back sooner as it was full on infection in chest heading towards worse. Keep your neck and chest warm at all times and really think if you need to work. Get better soon

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 03/11/2019 09:17

I sometimes find that a spoonful of honey or chocolate coats and soothes the throat enough to help stop the cough. Sleeping propped up also helps.

Also....not always possible but before bed, try to not cough as much as is possible. For me I find that once you’ve started it gets worse and worse and harder to stop.

Clangus00 · 03/11/2019 09:23

Try Piriton. I had a horrendous cough last year, had an inhaler & everything. Piriton worked, even though it wasn’t an allergic cough.

TabbyMumz · 03/11/2019 09:35

Pholcodeine. It suppresses dry coughs. Dont get into a discussion with your pharmacist as they will try and sell you covonia.

Firsttimemama2017 · 03/11/2019 09:37

I had a terrible cough in the summer after having the flu and the only thing which stopped me coughing long enough to fall asleep was hot water with honey and lemon and basically sitting up in bed! Hope you feel better soon!

MrsTJOsbornee · 03/11/2019 09:38

Pineapple chunks are supposed to be good. Clear what ever is in your throat. Or take boiling water (as hot as you can take it) and sip it at least 30 times. Feel better!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 03/11/2019 09:38

The vicks on feet thing really does work. I also find opening the window a little so there’s some airflow in the room helps. Obviously not ideal in winter when it’s cold overnight but it really does help.

PinkSubscriber · 03/11/2019 09:39

I was told by my doctor that codeine suppresses coughs.

TabbyMumz · 03/11/2019 09:41

"I was told by my doctor that codeine suppresses coughs."......that's right....that's why pholcodeine cough medicine is the best.
