To think they have no right to my bank statement

I ate out at a restaurant a couple of weeks ago. When I paid, the card machine declined the payment so I tried again and it went through. I've since discovered both charges were taken. The restaurant (a big chain) have stated they can't investigate unless I email them my bank statement showing both charges. Without printing and scanning back in (which I think would look dodgy) I can't think of any way of hiding the rest of my information and I'm pretty pissed off that they're not just checking their own records (which will show two payments from me in minutes) rather than asking for personal data. Photocopy and black out the boys they don’t need to see with a sharpie

CottonSock · 30/10/2019 20:27

Screen shot from online and crop it.

Queenie8 · 30/10/2019 20:28

I can search for specific payments to companies and a date frame on my online banking account.

WrongKindOfFace · 30/10/2019 20:28

Screenshot it (or take a photo) and use the photo edit tool to black out the bits you don’t want them to see.

greypetex · 30/10/2019 20:28

As if they care! They just need to clarify the double transaction. Although they should be able to trace it from their end anyway.

Queenie8 · 30/10/2019 20:28

Alternatively do a charge back under the visa protection scheme with your bank.

thisisthetime · 30/10/2019 20:28

If you screenshot it on your phone you could edit the photo to cross out all the unnecessary parts I think then email the edited screenshot.

JumpingFrogs · 30/10/2019 20:31

I think you should take this up with your bank rather than the restaurant. You should get one of the two debits refunded.

bruffin · 30/10/2019 20:32

My bank ap won't let me sscreenshot

CottonSock · 30/10/2019 20:33

Photo it from another device?

CottonSock · 30/10/2019 20:34

I just had to send all 4 of mine and dh bank account statement for extending mortgage. It made me feel very anxious.

Bibijayne · 30/10/2019 20:34

Raise a dispute via your bank. They can do the chasing of the payment for you.

LonginesPrime · 30/10/2019 20:35

Without printing and scanning back in (which I think would look dodgy) I can't think of any way

Why does it matter if it looks dodgy?

You've not done anything wrong!

Chloemol · 30/10/2019 20:39

Ask your bank to return the extra payment

SwanneeKazoo · 30/10/2019 20:41

print it from your online account as a pdf then redact the bits that aren't relevant?

wineisnecessary · 30/10/2019 20:41

Don't be bloody daft !! , print statement cross out sensitive info with a black marker , email necessary information. Job done .
They need to prove they can do a refund and are not going to go through the many transactions without proof .

category12 · 30/10/2019 20:58

I'd have thought you can filter it if you have online banking. I can.

SunshineAngel · 30/10/2019 21:00

Just show them the bit they need to see and blank out the rest. They don't have right to see everything on your statement, but then again I doubt they want to. All they want to see is that this payment has indeed been taken twice, or you could just be BSing them to get a refund. Many have most likely tried before. They're not just going to take your word for it and hand over money, are they?

cabbageking · 30/10/2019 21:01

Ask the bank to do a recharge back into your account.

dietcokemum · 30/10/2019 21:04

Just print screen then cut it down to only show those two entries.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/10/2019 21:13

Print it out, put a piece of paper over the other transactions, just leaving the double transactions and your name and address, take a photo of it with your phone and email that back to them - easy!

HeyNotInMyName · 30/10/2019 21:13

The people to contact is your bank, not the shop.
I’ve had that happened to me before and what made a difference is to have the ticket showing that the transaction was declined.
But the issue here is with VISA, not the shop.

inwood · 30/10/2019 21:18

Just crop it, nit a big deal.

ToastyFingers · 30/10/2019 21:18

Download a pdf statement via online banking. Use a drawing app to black out anything you fancy.
Save, and email.

VenusTiger · 30/10/2019 21:24

I had to do this OP last year - I screenshot my statement online, blacked out everything, all but my name and the banks name and logo and the transactions (photo edit).
It served its purpose and I got my refund.
