To think they have no right to my bank statement

I ate out at a restaurant a couple of weeks ago. When I paid, the card machine declined the payment so I tried again and it went through. I've since discovered both charges were taken. The restaurant (a big chain) have stated they can't investigate unless I email them my bank statement showing both charges. Without printing and scanning back in (which I think would look dodgy) I can't think of any way of hiding the rest of my information and I'm pretty pissed off that they're not just checking their own records (which will show two payments from me in minutes) rather than asking for personal data. Are you usually this much hard work? Just cross out the transactions or block them out - or contact your bank.

Cherrysoup · 30/10/2019 21:57

I can search for specific payments to companies and a date frame on my online banking account.

Same, don’t most online banking apps have a search facility now?

fruitbrewhaha · 30/10/2019 22:01

I'm wondering what else is on your bank statement for you to be bashful about.

IWillJustKeepQuietThen · 30/10/2019 22:02

What about just a mini statement.

Branster · 30/10/2019 22:18

Do a search by restaurant name and date then print or take a photo of the screen, blank out any personal information and send them that.

WooomanMoomin · 30/10/2019 22:25

You should be talking to the bank. They can see 2 payments seconds apart, so can charge one back. I’ve done it few times in the past and it’s very easy.

PlayingInTheShadows · 30/10/2019 22:53

@Littletabbyocelot If you're using Windows, login to your banking to your statement, then click on your start menu and search for 'Snipping Tool'.

Snip your statement and use the pen to cross out bits you dont want them to see.

Then click save. Done!

ShiningInTheDark · 30/10/2019 23:01

Go through your bank - they will refund and then investigate, it’s the least bother option.

chatwoo · 30/10/2019 23:40

You shouldn't be going through the vendor because your bank can dispute this with them and refund one of the charges.

There's no reason for you to deal with this yourself.

SKMCR · 30/10/2019 23:48

I'd just go via Chargebacks or disputes area of your bank to get it back.

scoobydoo1971 · 30/10/2019 23:49

Like others have mentioned, go to the bank not the place of transaction/ There is no guarantee they will refund you if they are being difficult. Use your card protection and ask the bank to do a chargeback. The onus of responsibility is then on the retailer to prove both transactions were valid. This is going to be impossible in their case. I had this problem in a high street store once with duplicate charges minutes apart...chargeback did the job, you may have to complete a brief form for the bank explaining the situation but it is worth it to get your money back.

bumblingbovine49 · 30/10/2019 23:51

Just print it out, black out the bits you don't want with to show with a black marker pen and rescan it or take photo if easier and email it to them. That is absolutely fine. why would it look dodgy?
I have done this several times when I have provided Bank statements to prove a P
particular payment has been made. What a fuss about nothing

melj1213 · 31/10/2019 01:50

OP, I work for a supermarket and I deal with this regularly when transactions fail and customers have to put their card in a second time and then claim their card has been charged twice.

Usually both transactions are "pending" at this point, one will complete and the failed transaction will just drop off but, as the banks are never as quick to release money as they are to ring fence it, it still shows both transactions on online statements. If we were to refund a transaction and the other drops off then - instead of paying twice - the customer isnt paying at all. Therefore to refund an overcharge we need to see proof of both payments being completed, which is a bank statement.

When we ask to see statements we dont care about any other information except the two transactions at our store showing as completed so that we can refund one and we really dont care if you black everything else out. All we need to see is the two relevant transactions.

Crazyladee · 31/10/2019 07:50

@bananapeach

Why is the OP being hard work? She feels uneasy about sending private and personal bank information to a restaurant where it could land in anyone's hands. OP I would contact your bank first and explain what's happened.

nrpmum · 31/10/2019 07:54

Retail dispute via the bank or get the authorisation codes from the bank and provide them to the outlet.

CAG12 · 31/10/2019 08:03

Just screenshot it. Then scribble out the bits you dont want them to see. Then email it them.
