As the title really, just wondering if it's possible for them to survive a winter without one?
Mine go to a large school (600+) and last year even the parents and teachers caught it.
It's already doing the rounds, I've a feeling it's going to be a long stretch till spring!

I have 3DC
1 was sick last winter
Other 2 never ill
Breastfed then all until they were 2
Avoid every bug
Not sure if related or genetic I also never had a bug but was also breastfed until age 1.

rugbychick1 · 24/10/2019 18:35

One DD, aged 7.7 years. Bottle fed. Never had a stomach bug, even at nursery. Has the odd cold, but ever robust, and rarely ill. Unlike her mother!

Paddingtonthebear · 24/10/2019 18:36

Same as above. No bugs, no sickness, has not missed a day of nursery or school in 6 years.

Crunchymum · 24/10/2019 18:37

@loops2019

Not sure what being BF has to do with it?

FWIW, the child I breastfed the longest (2y 8m) and the one with the "best" diet gets ill the most.

Average 2 tummy bugs a year.

DialANumber · 24/10/2019 18:38

I really hope I don't regret typing this....

Next to never! They do go to a very small school where they spend a lot of time outside and handwashing is supervised though which seems to help.

GettingABitDesperateNow · 24/10/2019 18:38

Mine were both EBF til 18 months.

Both get a sickness bug every winter plus a random one at any other time of the year just to keep us on our toes

EntropyRising · 24/10/2019 18:40

I think when mine were quite young, we had a stomach bug probably every 18 months.

That was quite enough.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/10/2019 18:41

Once a year if that

GingersAreLush · 24/10/2019 18:48

I actually can’t remember the last time one of mine had a stomach bug. Of course now I’ve said that I’ve jinxed them and probably DP and I Hmm

Mine definitely don’t get one every year and sometimes only one gets it and everyone else escapes completely.

MrsMonkeyBear · 24/10/2019 18:48

None so far. My eldest is almost 5 and is in her first year of school so it will be a bit of a roulette this year. Thankfully it's a very small school and most (99.9%) of parents will keep a sick child off.

GingersAreLush · 24/10/2019 18:52

Neither of mine have ever been breastfed and I wasn’t either (and rarely get bugs) I think it’s pure luck a lot of the time.

Glitterblue · 24/10/2019 18:55

I'm scared in case I jinx it but DD is 9.5 and has only ever had one, when she was 3. She's very careful about hand washing and not touching her face, mouth etc. Practically the entire school had it this time last year and she managed to avoid it.

Andonandonan · 24/10/2019 18:56

One of mine got loads as a toddler, the odd one now & then since starting school (she’s now juniors age). Didn’t get one last winter.

The other has had one sickness bug once, about 4 years ago (touch wood he continues to escape them!).

No rhyme or reason as to why the difference.

DH & I both also work in schools & as a family we avoided them last winter.

Are pretty hot on hand hygiene etc but I think a lot of it is just luck too.

Ravenrob · 24/10/2019 18:56

Only once that I can think of and that's 4 years of nursery and just over 2 years of school. I caught it as well.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2019 18:56

Only once I think

Mayhemmumma · 24/10/2019 21:52

Mine are 5 and 8 and have never had sickness or diorreah past baby days I dont think.

Both get winter coughs and cold and my son gets reoccurring cold sores which have improved with year round obsessively twice a day (after teeth) applying factor 50 lip balm.

Both are good with hand washing and I'm a fan of hand sanitizer which we use more or less every time we get into the car, before eating if we are out etc

ActualHornist · 24/10/2019 21:56

Three boys - one stomach bug between them all, they’re 10, 10 and 8 now. Twins were at nursery and caught everything going but never d&v!

DH and I never get stomach bugs either. Although, we’re a family that get the shits rather than vomits if we’re ever ill.

Span1elsRock · 24/10/2019 22:03

Mine are adults now but I can only ever recall one bout of norovirus in the house (we went away for a weekend and my poor sister drew the short straw). Sadly the same wasn't true for colds.........

firesong · 24/10/2019 22:05

Hmm. DD is nearly 9 and has only been sick a few times in her life... she frequently feels sick though. I rarely vomit either, so it might be a genetic thing?

WellTidy · 24/10/2019 22:07

DS1 is so rarely I’ll. I think one stomach bug in all his primary school years. He is now at secondary. I think it’s a mixture of luck but I also wonder about the impact of his really good diet - lots of different types of food and nutrients and vitamins etc.

DS2 probably once a year. Awful diet.

Both bottle fed from weeks old.

SoyDora · 24/10/2019 22:08

I’m not sure what the method of feeding has to do with it, but my breastfed 5 and 4 year olds both have one currently (it’s doing the rounds at school), and my breastfed 9 month old has also picked it up.
Only DD1 was at school last year and she had one stomach bug (annoyingly sick on Sunday night and have to keep her home until weds due to 48 hour rule). DD2 (pre school at the time) also picked it up. We tend to average one a year.

AppleHEAD · 24/10/2019 22:09

Teach them to wash their hands properly. Once they can do that then the likelihood of them catching bugs diminishes.

NancyJoan · 24/10/2019 22:10

Never. We much prefer to average 3-4 chest infections each winter.

RosemarysBroomstick · 24/10/2019 22:11

Once, ds was 7 and dd 4.5. We all had it one by one with a day between each of us(very handy for the washing). Dd has it first, the night before we moved house, then ds, followed me then dh. Other than that, they just had 1 or 2 colds per winter.

troppibambini · 24/10/2019 22:12

Four kids and can't remember last time anyone was ill... maybe a couple of years ago.
Tummy bug maybe four years ago...
