As the title really, just wondering if it's possible for them to survive a winter without one?
Mine go to a large school (600+) and last year even the parents and teachers caught it.
It's already doing the rounds, I've a feeling it's going to be a long stretch till spring!

Eldest is 8. And we have had one roughly every 1-2 years. Never had a very bad one, thank goodness. And quite often I’ve been able to isolate it to the one child, which is difficult as they share bedrooms and bathrooms.

They are just the over night bugs They have had, so maybe 2-4 vomits over 4-8 hours and they’re done. But writing that down makes me think that they could have been food poisonings?

OneIsAWorldOfBooks · 26/10/2019 09:12

DS is 7 and had a sickness bug this week, he’s in year 3 and it’s only the second bug he’s had since starting school. Nursery however was a whole different ball game and we probably averaged 3-4 sickness bugs a year (with fairly constant vomiting for days) from when he was 8 months until about 3.5. Grim. He seems to bounce back quite quickly now (was only sick twice with this bug and was back to normal within hours whereas his friends were ill for days) my theory is that he caught every possible bug going in nursery so his body is now a pro at fighting it off.

Enb76 · 26/10/2019 09:14

Never. In fact she’s only been off school once for illness in her entire primary school life (now in Y6) and not for D&V. I’ve also never had a D&V bug.

Oblomov19 · 26/10/2019 09:17

I've had 2 ds's go through primary school and not have a tummy bug, a cold, d&v. Nothing.

They have both had only 2 days off in the whole of their primary schooling, for feeling 'not very well'.

Just luck of the draw I guess?

museumum · 26/10/2019 09:18

My 6y old has had two or three in his life. Never too traumatic (one big puke then a little bit off his food 24h and bouncing off the walls the next 24h he has to stay home, no real diarrhoea).
Dh and I never seem to go further than feeling a bit nauseous for a day.
I think we’re just lucky.

ShowOfHands · 26/10/2019 09:32

My dd was reading chapter books age 3.

I know that isn't strictly related to the prevalence of illness in primary aged children but I did think it might be a factor and of course, an opportunity to point out that I am a significantly better parent than everybody else.

HTH op.

FlorencesHunger · 26/10/2019 09:47

Last time mine had a bug was at nursery age. Not a single one through primary school even through the noro times and the random kid vomiting in local spots at school.

Plenty colds and coughs though.

Trewser · 26/10/2019 09:50

Never. I think dh and I had a bug when we went to India. My dcs have never had one. Theyve had sore throats and temperatures but never stomach bugs.

I think spending their childhood outside in mud and horseshit means they never get them. They wash their hands often.

coconuttelegraph · 26/10/2019 09:53

@showofhands I don't want to burst your bubble but I think you'll find that unless they are in Russian it has no effect on the incidence of D&V

MarthasGinYard · 26/10/2019 09:59

Dd is 9 only ever had one sickness bug in her life and never had dioreah

bobstersmum · 26/10/2019 09:59

@ShowOfHands errrr no, that didn't help at all, but thanks for your pointless post!

Mine have been caught twice with tummy bugs over 7 years of school. I work in a school, the first year i got every bug going ( i wash my hands well btw) but now i get every 4thish bug that goes round and not as badly. I read something about norovirus not affecting a particular blood group as much as the others.

MarthasGinYard · 26/10/2019 10:05

'diarrhoea'

Whoops

Dp and I were talking about this as her cousin is constantly having some sickness bug or other. We are scrupulously hygienic and she eats a reasonably healthy diet.

Cousin doesn't live in the cleanest of homes and eats mainly crap and ready made junk.

I do wonder if these things are linked.

LucileDuplessis · 26/10/2019 10:09

I've had two go through primary and one still there, and I can't remember any of them having a sickness bug. Touch wood!

LucileDuplessis · 26/10/2019 10:10

And I am by no means 'scrupulously hygienic '!

sanmiguel · 26/10/2019 10:18

My 12 year old has never been sick!
Only had a couple of colds. No idea what the lucky formular is but he is a regular hand washer as doesn't like muck or sticky hands.

Trewser · 26/10/2019 10:33

Our house is happily messy and muddy and we aren't particularly hygienic. The dcs are always letting the dogs lick their faces. Gross but they never seem to get ill.

Whattodoabout · 26/10/2019 10:52

Thankfully not often at all. They had one that I also caught about six months ago, it was horrendous. Before that I think the last one was two years ago. They get colds far more than stomach bugs.

FaFoutis · 26/10/2019 10:54

Never. And they almost never wash their hands.

Emmabryant123 · 26/10/2019 10:58

My 3 year old has been in nursery since last July and has never needed to miss a day off nursery so far

Emmabryant123 · 26/10/2019 10:59

July 2018 I mean sorry

TwinkleRedMoon · 26/10/2019 11:20

Ds never had a stomach bug at primary. A couple of bad chest infections though. Not sure if it would be hygiene or diet related.

ShinyGiratina · 26/10/2019 17:41

I think my 8yo has been sick twice? First time was on an AI holiday and it turned out that there was a bug sweeping through the hotel. I went down with that too. There was one other occasion after being winded by his brother; not sure if that was a cause or a co-incidence.

6yo has activated the 48 hr rule a few times, twice being sick shortly after playing football in hot weather, and once after a big coughing fit on a full stomach (colds go to his chest quite easily and turn into hacking coughs) He's in a really sickly class where a lot of children regularly go down like flies.

I'm only certain that there's been a sick bug involved on one of those occasions.
