PMS rage - evening primrose oil

nodramallamaloo · 10/10/2019 14:56

It's been a long time since I've posted on here, just wondering if anyone has had any success with evening primrose oil for pms?

Or if anyone experiences/has experienced pms rage - usually around the time of ovulation and the week leading up to..

OP posts:
boymum9 · 10/10/2019 14:59

I have awful pms, pmdd has been bought up by doctors, they gave me the pill to try help with the hormones but it made it even worse so I didn't some research myself and have started taking red clover tablets alongside these tablets called Wassen magnesium OK, hormonal balance, they have great reviews, also taking evening primrose and Angus cactus..!!

Jeezoh · 10/10/2019 14:59

Yes I did, I was sceptical about it but it really did help and I was noticeably less affected by moods. It’s worth a go!

catmam · 16/10/2019 18:38

Just curious @boymum9 how do you take the angus cactus? The lady in the local health shop gave me it for DD13 and it tastes and smells rank. Any way to disguise it for her?

boymum9 · 16/10/2019 19:10

@catmam I have capsules that I got from amazon, so they don't taste of anything but do smell quite strong! What form do you have it in?

I've tried everything. I mean, everything over the years.

The only thing that has noticably worked for me is drinking 1tsp of ground tumeric in (warmed) almond milk. I add cinnamon too.

Big difference since implementing a mug or two daily around PMS time (I have PMDD). I no longer have intense anger, suicidal thoughts or want to divorce DH every month.

It's worked better than medication, evening primrose, acupuncture, changing diet, CBT etc etc.

It might very well be placebo, or coincidence, or anything - but I keep up my daily mugs!

MrsL2016 · 16/10/2019 19:37

Evening Primrose Oil works for me. It makes me much calmer.

Quitedrab · 16/10/2019 19:43

I no longer have intense anger, suicidal thoughts or want to divorce DH every month.

This is me, apart from the "no longer" part. Thanks, I'm going to try your advice. And evening primrose. Never actually occurred to me to try dosing myself before.

bringbackthesun · 16/10/2019 19:47

I have horrible PMS rage, to the point where I sometimes get right up in my children’s faces and shout (which makes me feel like an absolutely terrible mother). What dosage evening primrose do people take and do you take it every day of the month?

nellyitsme · 16/10/2019 20:01

I had very bad PMS and I took part in a trial by Dr M Brush at St Thomas's hospital into the effectiveness of evening primrose oil for PMS. It worked for me and I continued with EP after the trial. We also took magnesium, b6, zinc Vit B and Vit C - it was expensive getting all these after the trial but well worth it to get my life back.

I'm post menopause now, but at the time EP was a godsend and before taking It, I really thought I was going mad.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 16/10/2019 20:05

I take Starflower Oil capsules. It has changed me from being so, so angry that I felt could have been physically violent in the week just before to being almost a pussycat and letting things GO.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 16/10/2019 20:17

Starfower oil here too. It has helped massively. I take 5 of these a day. It helps with breast pain as well, I hardly get any now. A pack lasts a month so it's not cheap but absolutely worth it. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E1LIBCI?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

MrsL2016 · 16/10/2019 21:58

@bringbackthesun I take it everyday and just use the standard 500mg strength you can get at the supermarket or pharmacy. They do a high strength one as well at 1000mg in some places.

bringbackthesun · 16/10/2019 22:12

Thanks MrsL, I’m definitely going to try some

billy1966 · 16/10/2019 22:23

Homicidal menopausal rage was averted by the recommendation of both a Starflower oil supplement and a B6-12 complex supplement to be taken together.

Utterly magic stuff after a fortnight. For me, transformative.

Apparently, Evening Primrose oil is ideal for teenagers and their hormone levels, but the big guns are needed for the older woman, and Starflower oil is where it's at.

So delighted with the relief it brought as my hormones levels very suddenly went into total melt down and I was both completely miserable and trying to manage Suge inexplicable rage.

billy1966 · 16/10/2019 22:26

Sudden inexplicable rage.

The B complex supports your nervous system which is also under pressure with hormonal changes.

Inebriati · 16/10/2019 22:27

I use magnesium for anxiety but I'm definitely more chilled every month. I'm going to try starflower oil as well.

MsJaneAusten · 16/10/2019 22:29

Wait. Oil of evening primrose can stop me wanting to divorce DH each month? Game changer! I’m off to get some online now.

Cartright · 16/10/2019 22:31

I take 1000mg a day and it helps; doesn't do away with the symptoms entirely but it reduces them significantly. It also helps with cystic acne. It may be placebo effect, but after suffering for years, I will take it.

The cheapest place I've found them is Sainsburys - 180 capsules 1000mg: £8 (Boots - 180 1000mg: £18.50; Holland and Barrett with starflower oil -1000mg 180: £33.99) so it's worth shopping around.

mintcucumber · 16/10/2019 22:37

I tried Starflower and EP oil and my usually oily-ish skin went crazy, I was literally wiping slicks of oil off my face.
Any recommendations for a brand that won’t make me look like you could fry an egg on my face?

SippingTea · 16/10/2019 22:39

@nellyitsme what dose of each of these do you take? I’m always cautious of taking too much of too many different supplements but would feel more confident knowing they’d been recommended by a medic. Any link to the study available at all?

nellyitsme · 16/10/2019 23:05

Hi @SippingTea I found this if it's any help:

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=RF8oDwAAQBAJ&pg=PT33&lpg=PT33&dq=dr+michael+brush+pms+evening+primrose+oil&source=bl&ots=6jLXDp50f&sig=ACfU3U0VaC--gN5xIlfJTOOyzMNE-qAE3Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj0uTP46HlAhUHKVAKHZFlCnsQ6AEwAHoECAoQAQ#v=onepage&q=dr%20michael%20brush%20pms%20evening%20primrose%20oil&f=false

nellyitsme · 16/10/2019 23:14

After the trial we could buy the supplements from Nature's best at a discount - I think they still stock them. Also magnesium ok is a good one to take instead. I took 3x 500 mg efamol daily 12 days before my period. It depended when your symptoms came on, mine usually came halfway between cycles

ReeRi · 16/10/2019 23:23

I cannot offer any advice but I do get severe PMT and also feel close fo divorcing DP every month. I get the rage and can almost feel my blood boil. I get VERY upset. If I don’t have anything to be so upset about at that moment in time I will be angry about something that happened weeks ago or that could happen or that happened once and didn’t bother me at all at the time and suddenly fills me with rage. I could just be lying in bed and feel very worked up. Have not really looked into supplements etc so this is v interesting to read.

SippingTea · 17/10/2019 11:34

Thanks @nellyitsme that’s really helpful. Smile
