Why Does Thornton's Chocolate taste so disgusting?

I simply don't understand why Thornton's chocolate is marketed as a quality product. It has an oily texture and is tasteless, much like cheap bars of unbranded "choc" they used to sell in Woolys.

Lindt chocolate is far superior. In fact Aldi's own brand is almost as good as Lindt, and a fraction of the price of Thorntons.

Our thorntons closed last month...wasnt surprised, it only kept going these last few years because you could ice messages on the chocolate and people bought those up for mothers day/ fathers day and birthdays. The chocolate itself tastes of synthetic sick....dairy milk or hotel chocolate for me.

Grumpyunleashed · 09/10/2019 12:03

I have a theory that their product is aimed at those who like the Emperors new clothes as they like things that are expensive.

Thorntons makes chocolate for Aldi, Marks and Spencers etc though?

Daffodil2018 · 09/10/2019 12:11

I like Thornton's! Their truffles are great.

GeneHuntLover · 09/10/2019 12:18

Palm oil probably

Platina · 09/10/2019 12:20

I like Thorntons. Hate Lindt

ImNotYourGranny · 09/10/2019 12:20

Thornton's mint chocolates are the best.

peachgreen · 09/10/2019 12:28

Yes I was about to say the same Cool - Thorntons, M&S and Aldi are all the same.

SVRT19674 · 09/10/2019 12:31

Thornton's isn't quality: Lindt is. But that doesn't mean you have to love the second and hate the first. There is an occasion for everything.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 09/10/2019 12:31

I don't like Thornton very much any more. It sort of tastes like they've taken out the natural ingredients (butter, cream, vanills etc) & replaced with synthetics/additives. The mouth feel is poor as a result. It's grainy, too sweet.

Okki · 09/10/2019 12:32

Thornton's don't make their own chocolate. They buy it in from a chocolate manufacturer who makes for many brands. No doubt why it tastes the same/similar to others. I believe it is a Thornton's recipe though.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 09/10/2019 12:38

Thorntons do make their own chocolate. Or maybe my OH sat at an imaginary desk within an imaginary factory when he went to work there for 2 years.. who knows LOL?

ChristinaRussell · 09/10/2019 12:39

Manufacturers/producers who make or supply different brands don't necessarily sell the same thing to everyone. Each brand or retailer will have their own spec & budget & the manufacturer will create it accordingly. My H used to deal with a company who supplied food (from fresh chickens to pizza) to everyone from M&S to Aldi and the products were very different. The chickens would be reared differently, for example (more/less space, different feed etc).

Whatisthisfuckery · 09/10/2019 12:43

Thorntons is vile. It’s gritty and horribly sweet. I’d rather eat Tesco own brand than that, and Tesco is much cheeper. Aldi chocolate it lovely.

Goawayquickly · 09/10/2019 12:44

I think it did used to be good but went downhill and is still just about trading on past glory. It used to be seen as a high quality product but we have more choice now and they probably have cheapened their ingredients. There’s nothing wrong with a decent priced, decent tasting chocolate but if they sell it in Poundland or reduced in Iceland it’s not ‘posh’ and it used to be seen as such by many.

user1471449295 · 09/10/2019 12:48

I’ve never liked Thorntons. Everyone raves about it...I’m glad I’m not the only one that finds their chocolate revolting

Elllicam · 09/10/2019 12:50

I don’t like thorntons or Lindt. I’m rapidly getting to the point where I don’t really like most chocolate which is a shame as I used to love all of it.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 09/10/2019 12:52

Yes it is disgusting. Probably all the palm oil.
I hesitate to even put it in a food bank if gifted some.
Godiva chocolate is nice.

adaline · 09/10/2019 12:52

It was great maybe twenty years ago. I used to go to the local cafe as a child and it was heaving and always really popular.

These days it tastes cheap. Like a PP said, probably due to added palm oil and additives as opposed to natural flavouring.

Yaflamingalah · 09/10/2019 12:54

I hesitate to even put it in a food bank if gifted some.
This is probably the most middle class thing I have ever read! Catch yourself on.

Willow2017 · 09/10/2019 12:58

It used to taste lovely (especially the Viennese truffles) but now it's full of palm oil and just slimey.

Our local shop.closed down recently too. Overpriced for whatever crap they put in it these days.

raspberryk · 09/10/2019 13:11

It used to be lovely, they have changed the ingredients to include palm, other oils and sweeteners amongst other things that never used to be in them and reduced fat cocoa etc.
I used to love a Viennese truffle and they are disgusting now. Such a shame.
I like the dusted dark chocolate truffles from Lidl that look like little poops Grin

Daffodil2018 · 09/10/2019 13:16

Agreed. I can't believe anyone actually thinks like this.

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/10/2019 13:35

Would hesitate to put it in the food bank? Food you do not want? What hyperbolic entitled nonsense. Am hoping that is satire.

I'm not a fan of either chocolate maker but do dislike Lindt, it's so greasy and creamy in a cloying way; Lindor is vile. Stopped eating Cadbury's years ago too -the decline in chocolate has been great for my health as I genuinely hardly buy it and regret when I do. I do like a Nestle Animal bar though Blush- plus they're in a proper paper and foil wrapper which is satisfyingly retro and comforting and has a good 'snap' when you bite it.
