Third night of coughing and the last two I've had very little sleep.
I've got a steam inhaler thing that soothes temporarily but not for long enough to make a difference, I've taken pholcodiene linctus, had a hot toddy. Vicks on feet doesn't work. I really need some sleep tonight, my lungs feel red raw. Any remedies I might not have thought of?

Co-codamol can help..

Lagatha · 06/10/2019 22:35

Prop yourself up on 2 or 3 pillows.
If the heating is on put wet towel on the radiator.
More hot toddys until you pass out.

adagio · 06/10/2019 22:38

Over the counter pulmo-bailley that stuff is totally rank but stops a cough dead. I think the smell/taste simply scares the cough off Grin

Mummychoochoo3 · 06/10/2019 22:38

Hi,
I've tried this several times and its works well for me. A few ingredients.
Fresh lemon juice 2tbsp
honey (manuka/raw/organic) 1tbsp coconut oil 2tbsp and 1 spoon of hot water.
Sometimes I add a spoon of apple cider vinegar. Drink as often as needed. Its always helped calm my cough before bed.

lifeforus · 06/10/2019 22:45

Mummychoochoo that's what I've just had with a shot of whisky in it. Stopped me coughing whilst I was drinking it but the effect has worn off.
I'm going to google that other Bailey stuff, never heard of it.

Benylin chesty coughs (not the non drowsy, it’s shite)

lifeforus · 06/10/2019 22:48

adagio it sounds similar to pholcodiene which I've taken, maybe it's stronger, I'll get some tomorrow to try.

A couple of drops of lavender oil mixed with a base oil (olive, jojoba, coconut - whatever you’ve got) on your feet, wear socks.
Combine with:
Make a mixture of lemon juice, honey, turmeric, a bit of black pepper and take a tablespoon every hour.

Or you can make golden milk using hot milk or alternative milk, turmeric, cinnamon, honey, ginger & a bit of black pepper. Make a flask up and take it up to bed.

Turmeric is brilliant for coughs!

Outsomnia · 06/10/2019 22:49

Vicks vapour rub on the soles of your feet. Add socks of course!

StCharlotte · 06/10/2019 22:50

Hot water with honey. I don't really like honey but I force it down as it really works.

MyIncapableOne · 06/10/2019 22:57

Oh - and really try to control your breathing. Can’t remember the website now, but basically the more you cough the more air you inhale which aggravates your lungs and cycle of coughing continues. Try to take really deep breaths through your nose and keep your mouth closed.

bridgetreilly · 06/10/2019 23:05

Well, after three and a half months of coughing, I can confirm that nothing actually works. The nurse practitioner's advice is:
Ice cold drinks (to deal with inflammation)
Warm drinks (to soothe the throat)
Try not to cough (because coughing itself inflames the airway and leads to more coughing)

kitk · 06/10/2019 23:10

If it's a dry cough try ammonia and ipecachuana mixture. Tastes like feet but it does help. Try to only take at night so you can rest though- it's not great to suppress a cough when you're up and it's manageable. Also if your bed has legs put books under the head end so you're elevated comfortably rather than with a million pillows

Mummy195 · 06/10/2019 23:17

If you have cough fits, cough with your mouth closed, to starve the cells on your throat of oxygen, blah blah blah. Some theory, but it seems to work .

Strepsils extra triple action work.

Eloisedublin123 · 06/10/2019 23:18

Look up on line the soaking wet towel on a coat hanger hanging on a wardrobe door in your bedroom thing, to increase humidity

Cherrysoup · 06/10/2019 23:24

Poor mum came into my room in the middle of the night when I was staying with her this summer and coughing my guts up. She gave me Vicks, which I put on my chest. Didn’t think to put it on my feet (what the fuck?!) and it stopped me coughing immediately.

Codeine is a cough suppressant.

allthelittleangelsriseupriseup · 06/10/2019 23:42

Cherry juice. Honest, it works. I have asthma and every cold I have ever had has gone straight onto my chest. I also work as a call centre assistant supervisor, so I have to talk all day every day. Cherry juice is my go to, and unlike most of the remedies above, it actually tastes nice!

ShetlandWife · 06/10/2019 23:44

Bronchostop pastilles. Honestly love them SO much. Full of the natural stuff like thyme, and despite me being really sceptical (they were recommended to me), they work for the 4 hours per the instructions.

DartmoorChef · 06/10/2019 23:50

Manuka honey and lemon, room temperature. Just regularly sip.

I also take an antihistamine as this dries up nasal passages.

ckc45d10 · 07/10/2019 22:10

Sorry to hear you are not feeling your best! Also for turmeric, one thing to note is that forms that are hydro-soluble will absorb better.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 07/10/2019 22:14

Sambuca is the only thing I've ever found that will kill a tickley cough. Such a nice burn on the way down.

But in reality, there is nothing, things might temporarily soothe or calm but you're coughing for a reason and you need to let your body do its shit. If to take cough suppressants you could end up with a bacterial infection and be much worse off.

Petrichor11 · 07/10/2019 22:19

Boots throat spray. When I had a horrific cough it was the only thing that allowed me to stop coughing long enough to get to sleep. It wasn’t very long lasting (it’s a numbing effect) but was brilliant while it lasted

Jakemans cough sweets (any cough sweets really), they just have a soothing effect on your throat but it helps a little.

Sleeping on as many pillows as you can if the coughing is worse at night

Justbenice1 · 07/10/2019 22:46

Try echinacea for a speedier recovery Flowers

MolyHolyGuacamole · 07/10/2019 22:48

Night Nurse, works wonders for me. And sleeping proper up helps

MustDust · 07/10/2019 22:51

Brufen /ibuprofen has been shown to be a cough suppressant, takes the pain and inflammation on your chest down too, all round allowing a bit of healing if you're sore. Ds had bad pneumonia and a doc recommend we tried it.
