Unspeakable

So DS (8) loves this YouTuber.

His friends at school say their parents won't let them watch him. They've also been banned from saying 'flippin' which apparantly is a bad word.

I have watched quite a few unspeakable videos with DS and honestly can't see what's wrong with them. He's obviously older than DS, but he doesn't swear, doesn't break the law, doesn't condone drink or drugs etc..

What's your view? Can I let him watch this guy? And what's wrong with saying 'flippin' ?

(Ps. DS is a really good kid. Well behaved at school, fun, polite. So I don't think he's picked up any bad habbits etc..??)

Frogsbreath, my 7yo loves those two the best as well. We sit and watch them together sometimes and haven’t seen anything I’d worry about. Lots of pranking stuff as well as minecraft but apart from it being a bit ott and in your face, it seems fine.

Loveislandaddict · 04/10/2019 19:31

Flippin is fine. I don’t see it as an alternative for more severe swear words. I’ve always used ‘Flippin Heck/eck” and thought nothing of it.

Ie. flippin Heck the rain is heavy today...

AnotherColdTea · 04/10/2019 19:32

@gwenneh I agree the Sharers are really weird!

InfiniteLists is another odd one.

Denis is a MC one I'm on the fence about - he seems ok but sometimes he plays with other people who swear, so he's on the "no" list.

Pimmsypimms · 04/10/2019 19:33

Although, to be fair, I have told him that he can't say 'what the flip' it just seems a bit too close to the bone.

AnotherColdTea · 04/10/2019 19:34

In fact now I've said that I think Denis is Roblox mostly?

PopularMMOs is a MC with no swearing but lots of weapons Hmm

Excuse ny rambling, it's just nice to be among people who have probably also heard of these channels & had to suffer through their DC watching them Wink

gwenneh · 04/10/2019 19:38

We're over PopularMMOs now but they did put out a book or two which the DC devoured.

Denis is mostly Roblox and I don't allow them to play that -- every time I did, the chat feature would somehow wind up back on. So now it is blocked at the modem level and no one can access it. However Denis himself is OK, and we have a fair bit of Sir Meows A Lot merch from his channel.

EleanorLavish · 04/10/2019 19:43
Grin I can’t believe anyone has an issue with saying flipping! Unspeakable, Preston and DanTDM all completely fine IMO. DS3 loves them!
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/10/2019 19:49

Mine loves Unspeakable. I'm not massively keen on the way he wastes food, plastic etc, but otherwise he's harmless.

CapturedFairy · 04/10/2019 19:51

@Whatsername7 the issue isn't YouTube the issue was you letting your 8 year old free reign over what they watched on it.

It is an incredible resource used in primary schools, they watch history stuff, learning French and science experiments you cannot recreate in a classroom.

Maybe talk to her about why she wanted make up in the first place. Also you can vet stuff on YouTube yourself then load into watch later and have a sign in on her chromebook so she cannot access it without you being there.

My sons are now teenagers and we have had them watch YouTubers for gaming including Stampy, Dan TDM and others who obviously all share a passion for Minecraft etc. It is just them gaining more knowledge on something they are passionate about. YouTube is great as long as you are monitoring what they are watching, we were fine with the no swearing YouTubers but did sit with them.

qwertytrewq · 04/10/2019 19:55

My nearly 7yo watches unspeakable's mind numbingly boring minecraft videos. I limit the time because I can't listen to him droning on for too long but he seems harmless … except that my little man has now adopted the phrase 'what in the world' and it's doing my head in!!

DonPablo · 04/10/2019 19:59

God, my kids love Dan TDM. I call him Dan TeDiuM. Hours and hours of the same shite. Better than Stampys 'Heloooooo' mind.

bobstersmum · 04/10/2019 20:01

Nothing wrong with unspeakable! Or dantdm or stampy. They are all very tame.

ReanimatedSGB · 04/10/2019 20:01

Oh for fuck's sake. Never mind what some other pearl-clutching twats do: if your DC likes this programme and is not running round the house calling you a cunt, let your DC get on with it. Precious parents do their DC no favours - either by keeping them out of the loop so they are isolated from friendship groups, or stopping them from developing their own judgement and social skills.

AnotherColdTea · 04/10/2019 20:01

Haha Don, he's DanTedium in our house too.

Does anyone have kids who watch Stampy still? I get the feeling he's not cool any more.

anyoneseenmykeys · 04/10/2019 20:02

flippin is completely inappropriate for a child, it doesn't matter is "fucking" would be worst, there's no need for either.

I can't see the point of these nonsense videos either, so my kids are not allowed to watch them either - judge if you must, I don't allow video games either. I am sure my kids will still survive my completely offensive rules.

anyoneseenmykeys · 04/10/2019 20:03

Oh for fuck's sake. Never mind what some other pearl-clutching twats do: if your DC likes this programme and is not running round the house calling you a cunt, let your DC get on with it.

I am sure I can live with having different standards than some posters, however attractive they make themselves sound.

Witchend · 04/10/2019 20:04

We used "flipping 'eck" back in the 80s. Along with "Blimey" and things like that.

I've seen a couple and I think him and DanTDM seem to be pretty aware of their young audience with their language.

HoneyandSpice · 04/10/2019 20:05

My DD (7) watches Unspeakable. Granted, she seems to have jumped from tots to teens / older. But he doesn't seem offensive to me. I've watched with her. I comment all the time about the plastic waste / his carbon footprint. But other than that, he seems ok.

gwenneh · 04/10/2019 20:06

@AnotherColdTea my 5 year old still watches Stampy, but he wants to be like his brother so he does watch Unspeakable too.

BoudicasBoudoir · 04/10/2019 20:20

Not the point, but when did Mumsnet get so coy about language?

anyoneseenmykeys · 04/10/2019 20:29

what's coy about not allowing your kids to swear or use inappropriate language? On a side note, why do some posters think they are so clever when they write fuck, twat, cunt? Is it because that language was not allowed at home and school?

Rachelover60 · 04/10/2019 20:34

"GPatz*
I've never heard of 'flippin' being a substitute swearword
.........
Me neither, I've said, "Flipping", nearly all my life too.

Oxford dictionary definition:
flipping
/ˈflɪpɪŋ/
Learn to pronounce
adjectiveINFORMAL•BRITISH
used for emphasis or to express mild annoyance.
"are you out of your flipping mind?"

Perhaps I need to watch my language. Flipping heck, what is the world coming to!

I'm sure Unspeakable isn't that bad, don't take any notice of the other mums, op.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 04/10/2019 20:37

Yep, unspeakable is a fixture in my house. Ds 8 has been a fan for what feels like forever.
He also got merch for christmas last year.

My biggest issue is that ds wants some of the giant lego that he builds stuff with!

Nowombattheinn · 04/10/2019 20:38

My 9 year old loves unspeakable too, where can you get the merch!?

BoudicasBoudoir · 04/10/2019 20:40

Not coy about not wanting children to use swear words, but coy about writing those swear words on an adult forum.
