Unspeakable

So DS (8) loves this YouTuber.

His friends at school say their parents won't let them watch him. They've also been banned from saying 'flippin' which apparantly is a bad word.

I have watched quite a few unspeakable videos with DS and honestly can't see what's wrong with them. He's obviously older than DS, but he doesn't swear, doesn't break the law, doesn't condone drink or drugs etc..

What's your view? Can I let him watch this guy? And what's wrong with saying 'flippin' ?

(Ps. DS is a really good kid. Well behaved at school, fun, polite. So I don't think he's picked up any bad habbits etc..??)

Flipping is probably a substitute for fucking, but I don't see that as a problem - better for children to use a gentle substitute than get into trouble for inappropriate use of something stronger.

By the way, you're allowed to say fucking on MN - in fact, I think some posters think it's compulsory. Grin

I'm just grateful we've moved on from Ryan!

Oh I refuse to allow/purchase anything to do with Ryan! Talk about a waste footprint.

I've always assumed that flipping was a substitute for fuck but that doesn't make it an actual swearword does it. It's like "Oh sugar" instead of "Oh shit", or if you're not into "blasphemy" "Gosh" instead of "God".

I think it's quite a nice word. N.b. I love swears, but obviously not children swearing. Unless they're very young, have no idea what they're saying and are just repeating what they heard someone else saying. A cousin of mine, when he was still a wee dote, heard someone say "Joe Higgins and his shit shite car". And repeated it to adults and me (late teens) a lot. Lots of telling him it wasn't a nice thing to say and trying really hard to keep a straight face because it was hilarious.

Thanks Rory!
I myself do find unspeakable really ‘flipping’ annoying!

My 7yo loves Unspeakable. I think he's a much better influence than a lot of the other youtubers around. I don't mind 'flip/flippin' unless we're out and it seems a little inappropriate, then I remind DS we don't really need to say it.

Mine watch the annoying shouty Roblox guy. His voice sets my teeth on edge but I don’t like to disparage their taste too much by telling them he’s rubbish. Grin

How can anyone object to flipping... unless you are Hyacinth Bucket.

Would rather Unspeakable than that awful HobbyKids family or... ~whispers~ CookieSwirlC.

Although I do think that Unspeakable sounds like one of the characters from Family Guy when he yells.

I've only banned PewDiePie. Fortunately DS could see my point and agreed with me. We'd both come to the conclusion that he was a victim-blaming neo-Nazi sadist bit odd before we googled him and found out that most normal people agreed with us.
I like LogDotZip and SB737 for Minecraft videos.
And Element Animation.
Element Animation and Dan Bull totally rock!

op it doesn't really matter whether other randoms think you are a crap mum, you should do what you feel is right for your dc. opinions of others don't matter if they judge you and put doubts in your mind.

I agree 100% with littlepaddypaws and I daresay the random parents who object to 'Unspeakable' have never really got into it or understood it. I'd think, "Flippin' 'eck, what a load of wallies".

Now....'flippin'' or 'flipping' is fine, we've established that, but I've heard people (on TV) say, 'fricking' or 'frickin' and that is a different matter altogether. It's slang and I expect they don't know but on googling, I saw what it meant. I thought, oooer missus'.

My boys are 7 & 9. They watched unspeakable alot and now it's not allowed in our house. I've thought about letting them watch it again, but there are some things he does in his videos that I dont accept. He screams ALOT. It's something we've been trying to get our o year old to stop doing. He screams anywhere . And he loves the word 'flip'. Which, idc if I'm the asshole mom. In my home, if you mean to say a bad word and substitute it with something else, you're still cussing because that's what you meant to do. They can cuss when they are adults, that is up to to them. There will not be any form of cussing to eachother, other kids, or adults.
Like said , I've thought about letting them watch it again- but I just went to see updates on his youtube channel and he and his friends were LICKING TOILETS. That is absolutely not okay.

Overall, I think everyone has a different view of this guy. He's just not allowed to be watch by either of boys. I dont think it's okay to let them think it's fine to scream rudely anywhere, break things for fun, lick toilets

And what's wrong with saying 'flippin'

I’d not be happy with hearing it from young children. It was considered very rude when I was a child.

I honestly thought everyone knew flipping is substitute for fucking, just like fudge is for fuck, with these youtubers. I explained to my 7yo he is not allowed to use it for this reason. He already knew those swear words, as he's heard them on the street or whatever other contexts. He understood and we carried on. I find DanTdm the most bearable one so to say. The rest are so obnoxious with the constant over the top enthusiasm and chatting and ' bro this and bro that' and overuse of 'epic' 😁.
Tldr, explain those are subs for curse words and he should not use them as such. Good luck.

Report
islandr · 12/06/2020 12:31

I agree . They can decide if they want to curse when they are adults and taking care of themselves. But I won’t allow it in my home.

islandr · 12/06/2020 12:32

I just feel like unspeakable makes it seem okay for my kids to do those things- breaking valuables , being rude, licking things ....

Hmmm can’t see the harm in flip tbh. My ds loves unspeakable but never comes out with what the flip.

Surely oh my gosh would be unacceptable by that measure? It’s the clean version of oh my god, which is taking the lords name etc..

Windyatthebeach, don't know about other posters, but I was refering strictly to the youtubers context. Like you can tell when they are using it in a proper cursing way. And yes, I don't want my 7yo to use it as such. I am fully aware that eventually, as he grows older, they will start slipping into his vocabulary, such is life. And really, I am a potty mouth myself who really tries to bite my tongue around him 😄. But, for now...I'd rather he didn't think it's ok to use them constantly, at the slightest thing that irritates him, as most of these youtubers do. I guess it's alot to do with the context and frequency they use them really.

I'm shocked but not entirely surprised that some of you are offended by your kids saying 'flipping'. Only on MN would this e a thing. Get a life.
