It's my Dad and step mum's wedding anniversary soon and would like to get them a nice meal in Whitstable.

Any good ideas?

Samphire but ask for a corner table as they really pack you in.

honeylulu · 27/09/2019 09:50

The Sportsman in Seasalter (just outside Whitstable) is meant to be amazing. Not been though, think it's pricey.

omikron · 27/09/2019 09:52

Do you know if the Whitstable Oyster co is any good?

Thanks for the recommendations

Another vote for The Sportsman, we took my dad there for his 60th. It is a bit pricey but the food is excellent.

omikron · 27/09/2019 09:54

We're thinking of paying around £100 and I've checked the Sportsman's menu and that looks doable, tell me if I'm way off!

The Whitstable Oyster Co used to be brilliant but it’s resting on its laurels a bit now I think. Samphire is lovely- but gets very crowded. Sportsman you need to book ages in advance

omikron · 27/09/2019 09:57

Were flexible with dates so they can book a convenient time. My Dad works in the US for a lot of the year so they may end up going some time in the new year!

Seconding Samphire, lovely food and atmosphere.

ElizaDee · 27/09/2019 10:01

Does it have to be Whitstable? The corner House in Minster is amazing. There's one in Canterbury too but I haven't been to that one.

BertrandRussell · 27/09/2019 10:03

I’d book The Sportsman then. Take thick coats for a blowy beach walk after.

omikron · 27/09/2019 10:04

They live around the corner from whits!

Another shout for the Sportsman, and also Reads in Faversham.

We used to prefer the Crab and Winkle to the Whitstable Oyster Co.

BertrandRussell · 27/09/2019 10:12

The East Quay used to do wonderful fish- don’t know if it still does. And there’s a nice place upstairs over the fish market. Can’t remember what it’s called

marfisa · 27/09/2019 10:15

We had a meal in Wheelers Oyster Bar this year and it was delicious.

Daffodil2018 · 27/09/2019 10:19

The Sportsman is wonderful. I had a birthday meal there while I was pregnant and they could not have been more accommodating. The food is out of this world and it's lovely and relaxed.

BlueCornsihPixie · 27/09/2019 10:22

Definitely the sportsman if it's within your price range. Miles better than anything else in the area, really good service as well and good atmosphere

omikron · 27/09/2019 11:34

Has anyone been to the Fordwich Arms?

OP posts:

“Has anyone been to the Fordwich Arms?“
I have. I practically had to go in disguise because I have local friends who are still up in arms about it. It was very good indeed - but I thought quite expensive.....

flamingjune123 · 27/09/2019 11:51

Salt marsh is a restaurant within a pub, I think it's the duke of Cumberland. It's only open a few sessions a week but is absolutely gorgeous.

Persea · 27/09/2019 11:55

I’d agree with The Sportsman. Probably a bit more than £100, but worth every penny and not ridiculously expensive for what is divine food and excellent service.

Lightsabre · 27/09/2019 12:11

Fordwich is more expensive than the Sportsman but food lovely in both places. I'd budget £150 for three if you're including wine.

omikron · 27/09/2019 12:34

We've budgeted £125 for two people at Fordwich arms. What swung it was the fact they send posh vouchers out so I thought that would be a nice touch.

Thank you for all your help!!

@BertrandRussell what were they up in arms about?!

omikron · 27/09/2019 12:34

Perhaps the Sportsman could be for one of their birthdays as i appreciate the love it's got from you lot!

Love MN

The lobster shack is fab

Sulla · 27/09/2019 12:39

Was very disappointed in the Sportsman. Very average food for very high prices. No one in my family would go there again.
