Anyone know about Martial Arts?

millstonegrit · 18/09/2019 21:30

Have been chatting to someone on line and they have sent message below

Okay.... I do have one tattoo. I had to have it.
I'm a 6 Dan Master of Ju-jitsu Aikido and other martial arts.
I'm a genuine Samurai. I was awarded the prestigious status by the Japanese council when I became a master. It tradition for a samurai warrior to have a Japanese tattoo of a Famous samurai and mythological animal... Mine is a Samurai and a Japanese dragon x
This smells like BS to me, any thoughts?

I know someone with unbelievable levels of martial arts achievements.

Several Dan's in several disciplines. He is a friend and runs a martial arts school. So I know it's true.

Can you google the Japanese council bit?

millstonegrit · 18/09/2019 21:36

Have tried google but nothing about Japanese Council.

Did he live in Japan?

Being a samurai isnt just down to paying for training. Google say they are picky and you usually need someone in the know to introduce you to a the school.

I few a few comments that said you need to live in Japan.

thenightsky · 18/09/2019 21:40

I googled and found this which I thought was very interesting.

Tilltheendoftheline · 18/09/2019 21:40

Tbh it sounds like bullshit to me.

I usually like to play along. Research the subject then start asking questions that will expose their stupid lies.

It's a fun game and I feel no guilt, if they tall shit. 😁

ClashCityRocker · 18/09/2019 21:42

I read that they tattooed their penises to look like aubergines.

Probably an urban myth though.

squeakybike · 18/09/2019 21:45

Tell him you're a secret assassin from a prestige school that you can't disclose.

ClashCityRocker · 18/09/2019 21:46

Also, they were apparently disbanded in 1870....

Wakeupalready · 18/09/2019 21:47

I know that for some forms of martial arts there are up to 8/9 dans - and for the higher levels you must live in Japan and undertake a certain amount of training, and can only be granted the dan in Japan.
( I know it applies for some versions of Karate for sure, as husband is black belt first dan in karate, black belt in Tai Kwon Do and fairy high level in Muay Thai)

But Jujitsu and Akido are completely separate disciplines so if the person is claiming they are a 6th Dan in Jujitsu Akido , - then that is bollocks as they ain't the same thing.
Jujitsu OR Akido - not Jujitsu Akido.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 18/09/2019 21:49

It sounds like bollocks!

amylou8 · 18/09/2019 21:51

I do Jiu Jitsu, my tattoo is a silhouette of a cat with flowers, I suppose it could look a bit Japanese is the right light. Does that count? 😂. To be fair I'm a novice, but this screams BS to me.

Neron · 18/09/2019 21:52

That's quite a claim, he's talking about at least 3 different disciplines. If it was real then he would know in jiu jitsu we call ranking above black 'degrees' not dan

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 18/09/2019 21:54

Well even if it was true, he's a bit of a boaster isn't he. That would put me off. He's either a bullshitter or a boaster.

ClashCityRocker · 18/09/2019 21:58

How old is he?

RealMermaid · 18/09/2019 22:03

I also sincerely doubt re: the tattoo thing because in Japan tattoos are quite taboo/frowned on as they are strongly associated with the Yakuza (mafia). There are actually a lot of public baths that won't let you in if you had a tattoo because of the stigma (it is changing a bit amongst younger people, you see the odd tattoo in hipster coffee shops in Japan now!).

Neron · 18/09/2019 22:05

I mean Mauricio Gomes is 'only' an 8th degree black belt in BJJ and that dude is a legend and literally the grandfather of the sport. He's been doing it over 50 years and only one of a few to hold that highest ranking.

RealMermaid · 18/09/2019 22:08

Neron - that's true for Brazilian jiu jitsu but in the classic Japanese Jujitsu the rankings are called Dan's, not degrees.

RightYesButNo · 18/09/2019 22:16

Not only is he full of shite, but he has no idea what he’s talking about. First of all, samurai no longer exist. Second of all, it’s a common misconception that they were all martial arts masters and fighters and some sort of secret society like this bloke seems to think (sounds like he’s seen too many movies). They were government officials. Possibly he’s gotten confused with ninjas... because he’s lying.

Here’s an article about both samurai and ninja, both of which are part of Japan’s history; not its present. travel-around-japan.com/blog/are-there-still-samurai-and-ninja-in-japan/

And no one in Japan would ever require a tattoo because, due to their association with the Yakuza, people who have tattoos are unable to use public onsen, share public baths, be undressed in public spaces, are still frowned on in very traditional roles, etc. Views on tattoos are very traditional still in Japan, though they’re slowly changing.

RachelGreensThanksgivingTrifle · 18/09/2019 22:17

Dodgy. Did he say if he teaches or fights?Samurai were disbanded in the 1870's and tattoos are notoriously hard to get in Japan and are usually linked to Yakuza. There are swordsmanship schools in Japan, mostly for tourists and involve cutting mats!
Jujitsu and Akido are two separate disciplines, you can go up to a 9th belt in BJJ but is a handful of people across the world. Someone of his alleged prestige would be teaching or fighting in the UFC, if you're going to lie at least make it believable!

Neron · 18/09/2019 22:18

Then I apologise, and I've learnt something new @RealMermaid thank you for correcting.
I still think it's quite a claim however as would still be at least 3 different disciplines at such a high level

millstonegrit · 19/09/2019 07:31

So I asked if he had ever lived in Japan and this is the response

No I've not lived in Japan..

The Japanese martial arts council gave me the master Dan when they came to the UK.
They already knew about me because I'm registered with them.
My master instructor lived in Japan for a while x

Honestly it's nothing exciting and I'm not some kind of fighting thug lol ..... I've been doing this most of my life and it's taught me a lot, especially respect of others, humility and kindness.

When I went to my master instructor at a young age he told me that I had to learn how to heal people before he would teach me how to hurt people, so I also learnt first aid at a young age.

I teach the security services, army lads, occasionally the police officers and prison officers how to look after themselves/ self defense. X

Dontlikeoranges · 19/09/2019 08:25

Oh you get this sort of crap ALL the time in martial arts. 100% bullshit. I've done martial arts for about 30 years and I'm a 4th dan. All the senior grades I know when asked about what they do would say something like 'I do a bit of karate' and wouldn't brag about it like that! I'm on various forums and the amount of times you hear of people saying things like this is unreal.

Basically anyone can claim themselves to be a grandmaster whatever in justmadeitup-do

tttigress · 19/09/2019 08:36

I think a samurai is more like an army officer.

Plus tattoos frowned up.

Equals total BS.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 19/09/2019 09:01

A guy I know has been a p/t Karate instructor for around 30yrs. He lived in Japan around 8yrs, speaks the language, and the things he can do are amazing to see. Doesn't have tattoos. I couldn't tell you what Dan he is...as Dontlikeoranges said, people who are highly proficient in something don't tend to brag about it to anyone who'll listen.

It's taught me a lot, especially respect of others, humility and kindness.

Yet he's randomly mentioned his 27th Dan 'Akido Jujitsu' to someone online, and says he gets called upon to train up the police, security and army personnel. "Humility" Grin

OP, this is a fantasist who probably grew up watching too many Jean Claude Van Damme movies!

I am laughing so much reading the update. What a knob.
