Amniotic fluid, wee or discharge?

Howdidido · 15/09/2019 19:30

Sorry tmi!

How do I know which it is? 35 weeks. Had a couple of supervision for reduce foetal movement. Now discharge is more watery than before. How do I know if I'm leaking amniotic fluid?

@Howdidido if I remember rightly, amniotic fluid doesn't really smell or if it does, it smells a little bit sweet.

Does it have an odour? What's the texture like?

lifecouldbeadream · 15/09/2019 19:33

Amniotic fluid has a particular smell, it’s sort of sweet. If you are concerned, contact your midwife/labour unit, it’s not worth taking a risk.

Trafalger · 15/09/2019 19:33

My midwife said it smell of hay. It may be worth putting a pad in as they can test if its waters at the hospital.

Jeezoh · 15/09/2019 19:35

Amniotic fluid smells slightly sweet, it doesn’t smell like wee at all. But please call your midwife if you’ve got any doubts xx

Nonnymum · 15/09/2019 19:36

When I wasn't sure whether my waters had broken I was told to wear a pad and see if it was damp after an hour. You coukd try that. But if you're worried call your hospital or midwife.

Howdidido · 15/09/2019 19:39

Midwife doesn't answer phone and the other option is to go to the next city to the main hospital. DD is in bed and DH is at work so I'm not sure if I want to call as they'll say come in and we'll have a look
How stupid is that? (Of me!)
I'll put a pad in and see.

Probably TMI but I had a lot of fluid-like discharge in the late stages of pregnancy and constantly lived in fear that I'd either wet myself or my waters had gone. Pad in and call the midwife. Fingers crossed for you OP.

BeanBag7 · 15/09/2019 19:42

TMI but is it leaking from your vagina? If so, unlikely to be wee. You could check with a clean finger. I would probably phone the maternity unit just in case.

If they ask you to come in, can you get someone to come and sit with DD if you need to go to the hospital, until your DH comes home from work. Even a friendly neighbour or something? Or could your husband even come home from work as it is a medical reason - I think most workplaces would be understanding with a heavily pregnant wife at home.

Personally I wouldnt want to risk it if it is leaking amniotic fluid.

Nonnymum · 15/09/2019 19:44

Have you got anyone you can call to come over and look after your daughter just in case you need to go in? How do you feel?

Her0utdoors · 15/09/2019 19:44

I know what hay smells like, and it doesn't smell like amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid smells of spunk, there's no escaping the fact.

7Worfs · 15/09/2019 19:47

OP keep the pad and bring it with you - midwifes want to see the colour. That’s how I was induced as they saw traces of meconium on the pad.
Also as PP said - faint smell of spunk

PastTippingPoint · 15/09/2019 19:48

Please ring your maternity triage/antenatal ward rather than your community midwife. They will be able to advise appropriately. Definitely pop a pad on in the mean time.
When your waters go it definitely has a very particular smell, like a bit chloriney. You can get watery discharge in pregnancy but it's better to get proper advice!

CarrotPuff · 15/09/2019 19:49

Put a pad on and lie down for mins. If you get a gush when you get up, it's probably your waters.

CarrotPuff · 15/09/2019 19:49

15 mins*

Oysterbabe · 15/09/2019 19:53

What colour is it? My waters were pale pink each time.

x2boys · 15/09/2019 19:57

When my waters went with ds1 there was a big gush , I didn't go into.Labour though and had to be induced ,I got repeated " gush,s until they admitted me and i.was induced .

Howdidido · 15/09/2019 20:02

Ah fuck it is isn't it?
I'll call triage. And then call DH to see if he can get someone to cover. Shit.

Thanks everyone

My waters didn’t particularly smell. I hope it all goes ok for you OP.

PowerslidePanda · 15/09/2019 20:11

My midwife said that if it's amniotic fluid, you'll leak a bit when you move or the baby moves and if it's not linked to movement, it's probably not your waters. But you're doing the right thing getting checked. Good luck!

Her0utdoors · 15/09/2019 20:24

All the best OP, hope tonight goes well for you.

DieBabySharkDie · 15/09/2019 20:25

Let us know how it goes Thanks

NoDontLookAtMeImShy · 15/09/2019 20:28

I had this. I bought some of the pads that show up blue if it's an amniotic fluid (only cos I pissed myself so much and wasn't sure).
It showed that it was my waters.
I went in and had to be induced. I was 37 weeks so a bit further on that you.

Good luck OP.

Howdidido · 15/09/2019 20:45

Called triage and they said if pad is saturated in 2 hours call back. If not, get some sleep and see how it is in morning

So. Fingers crossed. Early night for me I think.
