Please can I get some advice from people who know about iPhones? I’m in bits.

I’m sorry I know this isn’t really the right place to be posting this, but I need some advice. I think my battery is completely dead on my iPhone and this means I’ve now lost a lot of photos and videos of my children. I’ve tried plugging it in for a long time, tried the hard reset thing, and nothing is happening. Just a black screen!

I did have them backed up on GooglePhotos - or so I thought. They’re not showing on my google account at all Sad

What can I do now? Can I replace the battery and still keep my data? I’m actually unable to focus on anything right now and my anxiety is through the roof because I’m so devastated about potentially losing everything.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? And did you have a happy ending with your phone?

Do you have an iPad charger? The extra boost from an iPad charger can kickstart the battery again

ImAShowPony · 12/09/2019 15:06

Go to an Apple shop. You can have a new battery. I did it last year- I think it cost about £30- and it was brilliant to have it fully charging like a new phone.
If it is the battery, it shouldn't have affected your storage surely.

joblotbubble · 12/09/2019 15:09

My phone gets grumpy about charging cables (so often isn't even attempting to charge from a cable it happily used the week before). It might be worth heading to Poundland to buy a new one?

I'm not surprised your phone isn't happy if you are using cheap chargers all the time.

I didn't think people still bought Poundland chargers.

OP are you using a genuine charger?

Which iPhone is it?

IsobelRae23 · 12/09/2019 15:14

Just have a new battery put in.

Next time leave iCloud switches on- you don’t have to do anything with it.

Oh just had a thought, I’m 101% certain that when I had my battery changed they reloaded it form iCloud..... if you’ve switched that off, I don’t know how they will do it???

MustardScreams · 12/09/2019 15:19

If you have a new screen or battery put in the photos etc will still be there stored on the iPhone. As long as you don’t factory reset it it’ll be fine. You don’t lose your photos every time you turn it off do you? Your phone doesn’t know it’s broken, it is just like it’s switched off. Even if you replace the screen/battery.?

nononever · 12/09/2019 15:20

The photos are not stored on the battery.

Paddington68 · 12/09/2019 15:23

Take it to the Apple shop. Cry if you have to get better service. When they have fixed it reward yourself with wine. Don't forget to take the charger with you.

dollydaydream114 · 12/09/2019 15:26

The battery dying won't mean you lose photos.

As lots of people have said, just take it into an Apple store and they should be able to help. I strongly doubt you've lost anything.

While you're there, ask them to enable iCloud storage again. There's really nothing confusing about it - it just means that everything you've got saved on your phone gets backed up to your iCloud account so you can recover it if you need it if your phone is broken, lost or stolen.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 12/09/2019 15:39

Apple store will sort it for you. They're brilliant. Even if the battery is dead it doesn't mean you've lost everything. Definitely use iCloud in future though. You can ask them to set it up for you then you don't need to do anything else

Littlepumpkinpie · 12/09/2019 15:46

When you get your phone up and running I’d think about getting all the pictures made onto proper photos. Can be cheaply done 50 prints every month from snapfish for £3.50 and 45 prints a month from free prints all you pay is postage. You won’t of lost anything off your phone pop into an apple store they are very good

PositiveVibes11 · 12/09/2019 15:47

You won't have lost any data, you just need a new battery fitted. Do not plug it into iTunes because it might prompt you to restore it and then you will lose everything.

Definitely apple store- they are fantastic at all sorts of issues.

thecapitalsunited · 12/09/2019 15:52

When I had a new battery fitted by Apple they wiped my phone before they did it so going to Apple might be the best idea. A local phone repair shop will probably not wipe your phone before a battery replacement.

gingerscot · 12/09/2019 15:54

I fried my phone’s battery by using an iPad charger on the phone. Apparently you should never do this. The Apple store couldn’t get it back to life and I had to get a new phone. Luckily I had everything on the iCloud. Take it to an Apple store and get them to show you how to use iCloud if they get it up and running!

AngusThermopyle · 12/09/2019 15:57

Op, two things to try before knowing for sure it is actually dead as in our case phone wasn't actually the problem, firstly make sure there is no fluff in the port on the phone, try gently with a toothpick, this happened to one of my dc twice, phone died and would not charge at all due to pocket fluff in the socket. 🤨
Secondly if you haven't, try another lead, dh's lead stopped charging and we thought it was the phone.

Missingstreetlife · 12/09/2019 16:05

Ring Apple Store or helpline. You can google it. They are so helpful and patient

RiskIt4Biscuit · 12/09/2019 16:06

Try a new charger and cable.

You should be able to have the battery replaced.

My mum had the same problem with her very old iphone. Got quote for battery replacement, but the store tried to charge with their cable first, and that was the problem.

Hidingtonothing · 12/09/2019 16:12

Another vote for cleaning the charging port and/or trying a new charger before you do anything else. Apple store if that doesn't work, hope you get it sorted.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 12/09/2019 16:46

This happened to me - I paid to have the battery replaced by the chap on the phone stall at our local market ....and everything was still there when it charged up again. But I think the advice to take it into an apple shop is probably best.

iphonemisery · 12/09/2019 18:45

I’ve got a appointment booked for tomorrow. I hope it can be sorted Sad

Photos aren't affected by the battery. Whatever has to be done to get it going, the photos will still be there. And please please use iCloud. It's very simple to use, get them to show you.

Heartburn888 · 12/09/2019 19:13

Has the back light gone? Happened to me once with an iPhone and unfortunately there was n okay of saving it. I lost a lot of photos and videos and ones of my grandfather who passed around the time. Was gutted.

iphonemisery · 12/09/2019 19:15

Yeah I will use iCloud in future. My worry is if they’ll have to do a factory reset in order to get it working. Or if it’s a hardware issue. But like pp have said if it’s the battery that needs replacing surely that will mean everything on my phone is safe. That’s what I’m hoping for!

Heartburn888

I’m not sure what the back light is. Is that what lights the screen up? Sorry if I sound stupid. It could be that, I’m hoping it’s not. I’m sorry it happened to you too Sad
