AIBU to ask what your main bedroom is like?

We are moving house soon from a rental to our first property and I’m really excited about decorating for the first time ever.
However I’ve realised we really don’t know what we like! I’ve looked on Pinterest but everything seems to be very similar so I wondered if it was cheeky to ask people to share pictures of their room or rooms they would emulate given half the chance?

Looking for inspiration :)

Do you have a picture of the main bedroom? What period is the house? Are there any features in the bedroom such as fireplace?

What is your favourite colour? Do you like texture? Do you like pattern or plain? What atmosphete would you like to create?

If you can't answer the above questions, don't worry about starting with white walls and creating your room organically over time.

I would have to tidy up before I took a picture, but we live in an old house and have kept the Victorian theme with strong colours and vintage furniture.

WonderWomansSpin · 12/09/2019 11:09

I'm looking for inspiration too. I love our spare bedroom but our main bedroom hasn't come together yet at all.

Our spare room is bright and airy. It's an attic room. White bookcases. Cream and floral vintage hat boxes for storage and cream/beige suede drawers. Modern velvet rocking chair from Cult Furniture.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/09/2019 11:42

I don't have photos but my room at my mother's old house was different, but looked great. I went for purple, but you could do similar with any colour:

  • 3 walls very pale purple, far wall (small) very dark purple. Door in the light purple, skirting and door frame in the dark.
  • Light pine furniture, wood-effect laminate on the floor.
  • Dark wall broken up by 3 long Ikea wavy mirrors
  • Wire globes as lightshades

Nobody thought it sounded good, nobody had a bad word to say about it when they saw it.

PurpleFlower1983 · 12/09/2019 11:51

Ours house is Victorian so we have a cast iron fireplace and a traditional framed bed with bedknobs etc. We have a chandelier and the walls are one of the farrow and ball greys.

thecatsthecats · 12/09/2019 11:52

I'm super pleased with our main bedroom. Nothing matches except the bedside tables, but it all goes together in a very satisfying way.

New pine bedside tables.
Kingsize copper-framed bed.
Different tone of pine dressing table and mirror I found in the street.
Dark wood bookshelf.
Painted wardrobe.
Pale gold geometric mirror.

Then for colours:
White walls with one in Lavender Quartz (looks everything from lavender to slate grey according to the light).
Medium-dark grey curtains.
Wardrobe a very subtle pale grey-green.
Smoky vase with bright purple flowers.
Light fitting is victorianesque with red patches.
Bedding - sometimes greys and pinks, sometimes a riotous Indian type pattern.

I love it! Hate matchy matchy.

longearedbat · 12/09/2019 11:59

Mine is painted in a colour similar to skimming stone by farrow and ball (it's a crown matt emulsion). Ceiling and woodwork is in white. The carpet is a beige colour with a nice deep pile. The curtains are a cream and beigey check pattern from dunelm. I have a red armchair, a large red toned picture over the bed and red bedside lamps. It's quite boring but very restful. The only other furniture is a small chest of drawers and 2 bedside tables. Sorry, haven't got a decent picture.

Solitarycaddis · 12/09/2019 12:00

Top tip (nicked from here): once you have decided on a rough style, go with window dressings first. So if you have a curtain material you like, base the rest of the decorating scheme on that. Failing that, go with any fireplaces, carpet, other flooring or anything in the room that can't be changed and that you like! Failing all of those, be inspired by a a painting, poster or photo or a chair that would sit nicely in the room. (Personally, I think armchairs are a mistake in bedrooms though, even if you have the room, because they usually become dumping grounds for clothes!)

Bellasblankexpression · 12/09/2019 12:01

I don't have any pictures as we're not in yet and the link has been taken down, but it is a medium sized room with built in wardrobes fitted across the widest (back wall) these are a kind of off white/cream colour and will stay for the time being.
It has an oak coloured wooden floor so I'm mainly looking at interesting colour schemes/ways to give it a bit of character as there are no distinctive features like fireplaces etc.

Some of these sound lovely, I'm going to have to see if I can find more inspiring pictures I think.
Everything I look at online seems to be Farrow & Ball Hague Blue or lots of grey - which look lovely, but aren't to my taste and I don't think they'd work in that room anyway.

Managed to find a photo.

@purpleflower1983 I love that bed linen - the burst of yellowy/gold (or is it mustard) gives it a lovely pop of colour. Love your bed too. We currently have an ottoman bed but can't have a footboard because DH is too tall, but we need to get a headboard for it as I think it finishes a room nicely.

The room is a very similar size to yours, with a little more room between the bed and window, and with fitted wardrobes across the widest wall, across from the foot of the bed.

@Bellasblankexpression We were in the same boat with the bed as DH is 6ft 1 but we managed to find this king size one in Barker & Stonehouse that he could fit in! We’ve got a large double width draw unit to the left of the bed and the wardrobe is in the alcove next to the fireplace behind.

The bedding was from Next and the throw from Zara Home. I’ve got some similar Christy bedding aswell which is lovely.

VenusClapTrap · 12/09/2019 12:17

My bedroom is in the attic. We took out the ceilings and walls to expose the lovely old oak beams and put skylights in so there is loads of light. Also left some of the oak wall supports as room dividers between the sleeping area and dressing area. As the beams are quite a feature, I’ve kept the walls plain off-white, which sets off all the wood beautifully. Simple off-white blinds on the windows. Furnished with a mix of antique pieces and industrial style bits, and a neutral cow hide rug on the floor, which is original floorboards.

I’ve introduced some colour with plain sage green bed linen, and similar shade upholstery on an antique chaise.

And a fuck-tonne of plants. Hanging off the beams, big ones in pots on the floor, on the furniture and hanging shelves on the walls. It’s like a jungle up there - and takes hours to water everything! But I love sleeping amongst plants, I find it very restful.

sundowners · 12/09/2019 12:19

Go for a few walls/all walls in a very very light, pale blue ( we have done F&B Light Blue) with all other accessories white/off white/pale greys- its a stunning, fresh, relaxing, calming combination. I promise you you'd love it.

Keep clutter to an absolute minimum, few pictures of black white or low colour landscapes/nature/plant prints on walls.

sundowners · 12/09/2019 12:21

I stand corrected, ours was F&B Skylight- a gorgeous, wispy, very pale blue.

VenusClapTrap · 12/09/2019 12:26

A couple of pics. I’ve got my old bed linen on because the green stuff is in the wash, so haven’t included the bed! Grin

@VenusClapTrap That’s beautiful!

JoJoSM2 · 12/09/2019 12:39

Venus, so cool!

OP, have a look on Houzz. Probably a million pics to look at to narrow down what you like best.

IMO rooms look good when they are in keeping with the architecture and period of the property.

VenusClapTrap · 12/09/2019 13:03

Thank you! Smile

Sexnotgender · 12/09/2019 13:06

No furniture as photo was taken right after it had been decorated. Went for quite a rich blue as room is massive and could take the colour.

@VenusClapTrap that's really nice, love your flooring.

Serenity45 · 12/09/2019 13:24

Can't see rug ( as only just found one we like) or pics on walls (not put back up yet). We also have quite dark blue heavy floor length curtains as super high ceilings and a big room so can take it

Georgian house so very traditional- pale eau de nil green chalky paint on the walls and the same shade in eggshell on the doors of a wall of built in cupboards. Full length cream silk curtains at each of the 2 sash windows with a small nursing chair under each window. Cream painted vintage wooden bed, with a large vintage embroidered panel hanging from ceiling behind the bed and cream upholstered chesterfield sofa at foot of bed. Bare floorboards with a white washed finish and a mix of dark wood and white painted furniture. Plain white bedding.
