AIBU to think Monica was a dick to Rachel?

Just watching the episode where Rachel finds out about Monica and Chandler. They’re supposed to be best friends but Monica tries to convince Rachel there’s nothing going on! Lying straight to her face...

Why did Monica want to keep it a secret to such a great extent?

OP posts:

Because M+C wanted to see if the relationship had any legs before they revealed it to the group. Less pressure. I think when the others do find out, they're something like 6 months in and almost at the 'i love you' stage, so the pressure has gone.

Can you tell I've been off sick and binged the entire 10 seasons? Grin

elQuintoConyo · 07/09/2019 10:28

Oh, and Chandler was lying to his mates, too. And asked Joey to lie to a great extent. That was pretty shitty.

ETgo · 07/09/2019 10:30

I’m watching the same episode now 🙂

I think same as ☝️ - it’s a big thing for a couple to form out if a group and if it goes wrong it’s awkward for everyone

Anyone else now realising how much they don’t like Ross? Never had an issue when I was younger but I just don’t like him now 😧

StillCoughingandLaughing · 07/09/2019 10:31

YABU. What really bothers me is the lack of continuity. In one episode Rachel congratulates Monica on ‘her new job’ (i.e. letting her know she knows), but in the next Monica is surprised that Rachel knows.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 07/09/2019 10:33

Also, Chandler first tells Monica he loves her when she puts the turkey on her head, but then when she hears him tell the others he loves her, she acts like it’s the first time he’s said it.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 07/09/2019 10:35

I like Phoebe. She's quirky and enough of an arsehole to still seem human. I also like that she has a Hit List.

The Monica/Chandler thing was understandable because they lived through the aftermath of Ross and Rachel's 'we were on a break' thing and probably just didn't want to risk that.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 07/09/2019 10:38

Monica makes everything about her- and so does Ross tbf, they are the friends who always makes a massive drama out of everything and have to their feelings and viewpoints always centred. I would definitely have ended up going NC with those two!

PositiveVibez · 07/09/2019 10:39

Agree with the continuity issues. Never made sense to me.

It was very much of its time and makes me cringe when I watch it now.

The normalising of porn and 'gay' being an insult.

Mrsthomasshelby1 · 07/09/2019 10:39

@stillcoughingandlaughing yes, and also when Ross makes a big deal of saying Carol was his first and only sexual partner but then he had done it with the older librarian at college in a later episode

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 07/09/2019 10:56

They were all dicks to a certain extent. Ross obviously was King Dick. I like to think that now Rachel has realised what a twat he was and gone back to Paris. He's probably on wife 7 by now, she'll be a 20 something Rachel alike.

Goldensummer · 07/09/2019 10:58

Yes I knew Chandler had already told Monica he loved her! I couldn't remember when but it was the turkey on the head episode wasn't it!

NeverSayFreelance · 07/09/2019 10:58

Monica was a dick to everyone.

ChristmasFluff · 07/09/2019 11:36

I really didn't like that she made Rachel move out to have Chandler move in.

No need!

Iamafanoffans · 07/09/2019 11:40

I never really got that chandler and joey were that close, not the best buddies they were meant to be. Chandler was quite nasty to him sometimes, always taking the piss and undermining him.

kierenthecommunity · 07/09/2019 11:49

Monica has an easy time of it as a head chef in a restaurant. Ok, my knowledge of this is based on reading Anthony Bourdain where it seemed they worked 17 hour days but even if he was exaggerating you’d think she would have so many evenings free and certainly wouldn’t be hosting thanksgiving ever year.

If the joke was she took up the career based on a throwaway comment made by Chandler when she was a teenager they could have made her a home ec teacher or something

EdWinchester · 07/09/2019 11:51

I guess the secrecy added to the storyline, but I always thought it was ludicrous. Most of the plot lines were though, tbf.

70sWitch · 07/09/2019 11:55

They were ALL dicks to each other all the time. I wouldnt have wanted any of them as freinds.

Billballbaggins · 07/09/2019 11:57

I agree they were all dicks to each other! And as someone upthread says, Ross was the king dick. The uber dick.

Okurrrrrrrr · 07/09/2019 12:02

@ETgo I feel the same way about Ross now! At uni we absolutely loved him and thought he was so underrated, would quote him all the time. Now as a grown woman I see how borderline emotionally abusive and controlling he was.

As for Monica, I agree to a certain extent but think her turfing Rachel out of the flat was even worse. When she goes 'IT'S MY APARTMENT' and Rachel replies 'WELL IT'S MINE TOO. WHAT ELSE YOU GOT' I feel it's a mic drop moment. Monica and Chandler should have found their own place if they wanted to live together. (I believe the apartment was actually Monica's grandma's so this would make this post a moo point but sssshhhh point still stands)

Dogmcstuffins · 07/09/2019 12:08

I think Rachel was the biggest dick, she didn’t invite Monica - her oldest friend to her wedding. But then ran out of her wedding and to Monica for help.
She stole Jean Claude from Monica
She stole Monica’s thunder at her engagement party by making the evening all about her kissing Ross
Then announced her pregnancy (kinda) at Monica’s wedding and then stole Monica’s baby name for her daughter. (I’ve just finished rewatching the whole series over the last few months Grin )

IfNot · 07/09/2019 12:13

Monica would never give up the flat. It was her grandma's and the reason they could afford such a big place (rent controlled which even in the 90s waslike gold dust).
Watching it now I only like Rachel, Joey and pre-Monica Chandler.

Monica's chef job where she occasionally goes to work and bosses people about in pristine whites is enraging to anyone who was ever a chef!

Fizzypoo · 07/09/2019 12:18

I actually like that they are dicks to each other but still remain friends. In real life we don't accept people for who they are anymore and get on with it. Instead we disagree with our friends ways and judge them and fuck friendship groups up. In friends they just get on with it.

EdWinchester · 07/09/2019 12:28

Arf at moo point 🐄

bananaskinsnomnom · 07/09/2019 12:31

Ross was a spoilt brat and put Rachel down whenever he could. Put down her job, her mothering skills, all sorts....

I was one of the few people rooting for Rachel and Joey (ducking for cover now!)

Malibucyprus · 07/09/2019 12:38

I was rooting for Rachel & Joey too 😊
