To wear clothes like this at my age

PookieDo · 18/08/2019 11:34

I’m not brave enough to post an actual photo of myself but will describe it!

I am nearly 40. I have a professional job where I wear smart/casual type clothes, not as casual as leggings to work, but not full on suits required. Smart tops/trousers or nice (but not expensive dresses). I own heels but prefer flats. I don’t cross my work wardrobe with my out of work wardrobe very much at all

I am not the slimmest of women I am 14-16 and 5ft 6 with size 7 feet so I don’t feel very ‘girly’ and never have done

My out of work wardrobe is the AIBU here because I absolutely love wearing sportswear, or what they call ‘athleisure’ nowadays. Over sized T-shirt’s, massive hoodies, leggings, jeans and I love love love trainers. I don’t wear gym clothes out. My DD’s are teenagers and have the exact same look but with crop tops, which I do NOT wear 😂. I am wearing a black oversized hoodie with black leggings and Nike air max trainers today. It’s so comfortable and I just feel great

But I feel like i look like a fat old version of Ariana Grande or Billie Eilish and that people may be laughing at me Blush. Do you think I need to start ‘dressing my age’?

Yesterday, I had Adidas trainers, ankle length joggers and a t-shirt tied to one side on. I'm fat and nearly 40. I looked fab.

Wear what you want. I've been wearing pinnies and dungarees for years and I'm put out that the teens are now wearing them. I love boiler suits and they are all over the shops at the moment.

You don't stop wearing things you like or that suit you because of your age.

LollyBmummy3 · 18/08/2019 14:42

Wear what you want. I agree certain things are probably out (crop tops, mini skirts etc) There will however be people who disagree with your clothing choice. But who really cares? I’m 40 and size 10 i live in skinny jeans and plain t shirts and trainers. It’s what I like and I feel comfiest In them. I’m not trying to look younger, although I think it throws people off when trying to gauge my age. Just yesterday another mum from my kids school were chatting and we discovered that she worked at the high school I went to. She thought I might’ve been there when she started working there. I wasn’t, she’s 45! We actually could’ve been pupils at the same time. She was surprised when I told her! 😂

I've seen some super stylish older ladies and have been jealous of their effortless style, saw one last week with oliver peoples glasses and a white linen top and jeans and lovely jewellery, she had grey hair, it all looked so cool.

Anyway OP if you feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing, then you won't look too bad. It's all about what suits you and makes you feel good.

If you saw nearly 40yo woman with her teenage daughters dressed in similar clothing would you think she looked tragic, most people say no so I will just carry on!

Tbh, my 13 year old daughter dresses like that and I hate it. It just looks so dull.

So I wouldn't think it was tragic that you all dressed the same. I might think it was sad that you all lacked imagination though.

There is no "what to wear" at "a certain" age imo. You should wear whatever you feel best in. However, there is a bit of 'taking pride in your psychical apperance' (sorry dont know how to spell that word) so fine to wear athletic clothes. But buy a nice fit and fabric etc. So you look comfy but nice
Instead of comfy but slacking... if that makes any sense Blush

dottiedodah · 18/08/2019 15:07

Just wear whatever you want OP !. Im in my fifties and continue to wear stretch leisure trousers ,and comfy tops .Its 2019 FFS!. My SIL wears jeans (In her 60s),and my friend also wears trainers in her 70s!.Whatever you want to wear and fell comfortable in is the way to go!

PookieDo · 18/08/2019 15:08

When I was a teenager I wore all the stupid massive baggy jeans (spliffy ones 🙈) and huge sweatshirts most of the time with Reebok classic trainers

I don’t mind it being dull or unimaginative, I try to make it flattering on myself. I either wear converse or Nike’s. I don’t tend to go for really obvious branded things in mad colours all that often. I have a black Nirvana T-shirt that is from the men’s section of primark and I really like that.

If I am wearing something bigger on the top I would wear something tighter on the bottom so I am not swamped in material

I quite like what my DD’s wear, one of them rips her own jeans and they always look really cool, she loves those huge chunky giant trainers and a crop top and loads of jewellery. The other likes branded thick leggings with the thick waistband (with the logo on) to wear with really really white box fresh trainers

I cannot wait to take my work clothes off when I get home I just find them so restrictive and impractical for walking the dog, household things or shopping

I'm 77, size 12/14. Obviously don't need work clothes, and tend to wear the sort of casuals you describe. In fact at the moment I'm wearing casual pull-on jersey pants that used to belong to my grand-daughter. Only one proviso - nothing with slogans etc. Known within the family as "it's got bird-shit on it - no thanks".

HundredMilesAnHour · 18/08/2019 15:11

Last night (Sat) I spent the evening in the pub and I was wearing gym leggings (Varley), a big hoodie (with an eco-slogan on the front - by Christopher Raeburn) and Adidas Stella Mc trainers. I'm 49, 5 foot 9 and have size 8 feet. I am definitely not girly. Wink It never even occurred to me that I might be too old to dress like that. Confused Admittedly I had spent the previous 5 hours working in a gym though and was with a big group of similarly attired people who'd all been at the gym too (it was a 'sporting' competition and I was one of the judges).

Sparklesocks · 18/08/2019 15:14

I wear leggings, trackies, big T-shirts and sweatshirts round the house - I love it, it’s like my comfy home uniform

FenellaVelour · 18/08/2019 15:29

At the moment I’m wearing a Star Wars dress with the Death Star printed on it. I’m 43.

What you’re wearing sounds totally normal to me.

Clothes do not have age restrictions.

Boysey45 · 18/08/2019 15:43

I dress like you OP, today I'm wearing grey legging jeans, silver birkenstocks for the house, Gazelles outside, a black t shirt and a hooded top in olive.I also wear 6 large gold hopped earrings.

BeerandBiscuits · 18/08/2019 15:47

And where do you all get your oversized clothes?
I just buy larger sizes Smile.

PickAChew · 18/08/2019 15:51

You wear perfectly normal clothes.
