To wear clothes like this at my age

PookieDo · 18/08/2019 11:34

I’m not brave enough to post an actual photo of myself but will describe it!

I am nearly 40. I have a professional job where I wear smart/casual type clothes, not as casual as leggings to work, but not full on suits required. Smart tops/trousers or nice (but not expensive dresses). I own heels but prefer flats. I don’t cross my work wardrobe with my out of work wardrobe very much at all

I am not the slimmest of women I am 14-16 and 5ft 6 with size 7 feet so I don’t feel very ‘girly’ and never have done

My out of work wardrobe is the AIBU here because I absolutely love wearing sportswear, or what they call ‘athleisure’ nowadays. Over sized T-shirt’s, massive hoodies, leggings, jeans and I love love love trainers. I don’t wear gym clothes out. My DD’s are teenagers and have the exact same look but with crop tops, which I do NOT wear 😂. I am wearing a black oversized hoodie with black leggings and Nike air max trainers today. It’s so comfortable and I just feel great

But I feel like i look like a fat old version of Ariana Grande or Billie Eilish and that people may be laughing at me Blush. Do you think I need to start ‘dressing my age’?

You're old enough to wear what you want. Sounds fine to me.....I'm similar age and have similar style. Anyone who criticizes probably has a stick permanently lodged in their arse.

notsohippychick · 18/08/2019 12:55

Your look sounds right up my street! I’m fact yesterday I found a Nike hoodie from a charity shop. Love it!

notsohippychick · 18/08/2019 12:58

red bless your Mum! That sounds like my ideal if hell jn terms if comfort! 🤣❤️🤣❤️

BogglesGoggles · 18/08/2019 12:59

I’ve always thought you can only get away with wearing athleisure if you actually look like you have/are about to exercise (I.e. toned and slim). Obviously I don’t wear it.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 18/08/2019 13:01

I am in my 50’s. Summer leisure wear is sports shorts and tees. Winter is jeans, tees and baggy jumpers. Footwear is a problem for me as I have an arthritic ankle so no heals but a mix of sandals, trainers and my winter rocket dog boots.
The only change to my waldrobe over the past 30 years is the lack of any type of heel and now all my footwear has arch support.

Trooperslaneagain · 18/08/2019 13:01

Skinny jeans from Morrison's - lost a shit tonne of weight and top shop doesn't fit me anymore.

Work dresses all in the wardrobe - all too big for me - and I'm 46.

Wear what you like!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/08/2019 13:11

My mum is nearly 60 and she wears skinny jeans, hoodies and Fly boots. She looks cool.

MrsSpenserGregson · 18/08/2019 13:17

20 things that women should stop wearing after the age of 30 / 40 / whatever:

1-20: the weight of other people's judgments and expectations.

I'm not sure who to attribute this to (Maura Quint is often credited) but I've seen it in several places on t'internet and I live by it 100% (I'm 47).

TheStuffedPenguin · 18/08/2019 13:20

I don’t wear gym clothes out.

So what's the issue?

Meangirls36 · 18/08/2019 13:23

I'm size 14 with 6 and a half feet and I feel extremely girly thank you very much! How is looking like a stick girly? And I love my feet they look amazing in heels. Wear whatever you want.

walkintheparc · 18/08/2019 13:25

Wear whatever you feel best in!

Fashion/clothing is just a way to express yourself, if you just want to be comfy and plain, then that is absolutely fine.

Age shouldn't come into it at all!

Musicforsnorks · 18/08/2019 13:25

How on earth is this even remotely controversial when the dress style you describe matches around 99% of the rest of the uk population at pretty much all age points?

Am i missing something?

MrsTishellsNeckBrace · 18/08/2019 13:28

If you start dressing your age there may be a tumbledown effect that I might have to start acting my age. This must be avoided at all costs. So my vote is cast as you are NOT being unreasonable.

gotmychocolateimgood · 18/08/2019 13:28

Crack on, OP. Sounds fine to me!

growlingbear · 18/08/2019 13:28

I see hundreds of women dressed like that in town every weekend. I came onto this thread thinking you were going to confess to scarlet mini skirts and fishnets with Doc Martens. Your look is very mainstream and tame. Even if it weren't, you can wear whatever you want.

timshelthechoice · 18/08/2019 13:29

Wear what you like!

dollydaydream114 · 18/08/2019 13:31

I’ve always thought you can only get away with wearing athleisure if you actually look like you have/are about to exercise (I.e. toned and slim).

LOL if you think only toned, slim people exercise. I’m not toned or slim and I work out or go running five times a week. Nice to know that in your world, I shouldn’t even wear a hoodie, let alone my favourite Nike leggings. Hmm

InvernessAdventure · 18/08/2019 13:33

YABU to use the word athleisure.

DamnItsSevenAM · 18/08/2019 13:35

I think you sound cool OP and you should definitely wear what the hell you want. I realised a few years ago that I'm never going to get any younger and I can spend the rest of my life worrying that I'm too old for things, or just get on and enjoy it!

BlueJava · 18/08/2019 13:41

I don't think anyones cares, and neither should you! Just wear what you like and feel comfortable in. I own no heels, I wear jeans/tshirt/trainers everyday. I own only 1 dress and I haven't worn it for ages... I am 54 and I work but in IT so everyone wear jeans. But I don't think anyone minds or cares.

JustWantALoverLikeAnyOther · 18/08/2019 13:41

Surely loads of people of all ages wear that, OP?

Wear what you like.

I'm 45. I wear skater dresses, tights and DMs. My hair is a bright red bob. I have an undercut and piercings.

I've got a very responsible job and wear a 'smarter' version of this for work.

jenthelibrarian · 18/08/2019 13:43

I'm 63 and am wearing jeans, jungle-print Converse, a tshirt from the Chicago Art Institute and a large grey hoodie from the men's section of Primark.
If I look at 'smart' clothes I always think they look too old.

JustWantALoverLikeAnyOther · 18/08/2019 13:45

Tbh, my son's oversized t shirts and leggings is what I wear to do the housework in. Surely most people do?

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 18/08/2019 13:45

Think you'll all enjoy the humour and point clearly made here:

JustWantALoverLikeAnyOther · 18/08/2019 13:46

And you're not even 40?!!!

How can you even question whether you're too old to do/wear something when you're not even 40? Confused
