Victoire had been chosen (and is the only name dh and I agree on) and now I'm inclined to change it as I really don't want to people to think I got the idea from Harry Potter or to immediately think of Harry Potter when they meet dd. V annoyed. + I'm worried that over the coming years it will become a much more widely chosen name (something I'd like to avoid when it comes to dd2's name). AIBU?

For a girl I think....

MrsFogi · 03/08/2007 15:31

Oooh I'll have to be unreasonable more often it seems to elicit many more responses than my resonable threads! Am now beginning to have doubts about how well the name works in England though(I've only ever thought about it in French) - I shall add pronunciation by non-French spakers to my list of concerns (now standing at HP link, HP effect (everyone nicking my wonderful name and it becoming common), risk of being shortened to Vic/Vicky and pronunciation by Brits). All views on my concerns list gratefully receieved.
For a girl custard.

YABU.

It is probably French anyway.

(In fact it is, it's just the French version of Victoria - here.)

The world doesn't revolve around HP, especially such a minor character.

(It is a great name BTW....)

onetiredmummy · 03/08/2007 20:47

Can't even remember a Victoire in the hp books - who is she?? & I wouldn't have made the connection

expatinscotland · 03/08/2007 20:51

Well, it's Fleur and Bill's daughter, Fleur being French.

Try another French name.

My mum's mum was French and her dad Mexican-American, so they went for Martine, which was easy enough to translate to Spanish, too.

I was almost a Leticia, but the nickname in Spanish is Leti, which my dad didn't like.

unknownrebelbang · 03/08/2007 20:54

YABU.

Would never have entered my head that a baby named Victoire was named after a character who's mentioned once?

A fair few people are convinced that DS2 is named after a certain Mr Williams. He's not, he's named after his dad but it's no big deal.

unknownrebelbang · 03/08/2007 20:56

And there's nowt wrong with being shortened to Vicky! However, when your name IS Vikki, tis rather irritating to be called Victoria, as everyone assumes that is your REAL name.

grrr.

lol.

If it bothers you that much, I'd consider another name.

Wheelybug · 03/08/2007 21:00

MrsFogi - I speak from experience (the more common English (German really) version) and if you don't (and dd when she's older) want it shortened it won't be !

My parents never liked Vicky and even as a feisty 4 year old on cub camp (2 older brothers and dad arkela) I would kick boys in the shins if they dared call me vicky

Have learnt some social graces now and just grit my teeth but no one calls me vicky bar a couple of people who are just too daft to realise no one else does. Some people call me vic (inc DH) but thats only cos I relented to it in my early 20s cos I thought it sounded quite cool. Still call myself Victoria though.

So, don't let that worry cloud you. Ive always liked my name and think the french version even nicer.

Wheelybug · 03/08/2007 21:01

sorry unknown I typed my response before reading yours. There's obviously nothing wrong with being called vicky if thats what you either choose or, indeed, are called

unknownrebelbang · 03/08/2007 21:10

lol at xpost.

I am not only a Vicky, I am a VIKKI.

Naff apparently.

I blame the parents, lol.

Wheelybug · 03/08/2007 21:16

Apologies for misspelling

unknownrebelbang · 03/08/2007 21:18

lol, I was pointing out the apparent naffness of the spelling, not the mis-spelling.

Wheelybug · 03/08/2007 21:48
Grin
Stroo · 03/08/2007 22:10

Years ago i saw an interview on the telly with a lady in her seventies called Willow. I absolutely loved the name and thought it was really 'different'. then guess what.........................Buffy!!!

Just as well i had two boys really!!!

Stroo · 03/08/2007 22:11

Also - called our dog Strider years before the fLOTR films as Dh is a Massive fan of the books and we thought it was quite cool!!!

Now people just say - "Oh, he's really foxy in that film!"

sighs

GodzillasBumcheek · 03/08/2007 22:21

Just a thought...mostly the names of the characters mentioned were chosen to be endearing/beautiful/unusual. They still are. If you read baby names books you will find examples of older names either 'made popular by' or invented in books/films. Nobody will remember in a few years time.

alycat · 03/08/2007 22:22

My DD is Saskia she is 7.5 yrs (we have a strange Dutch surname and it is a dutch firstname - Rembrants lover/mistress/wife).

Cna't tell you the amount of people who said, "After that girl from Eatenders who was killed with the ashtray..." ER, NO!

No think Victoire will be fine and a very pretty name too.

saltire · 03/08/2007 22:26

I thought you were going to say Kendra - Dumbledores mums name, now that is lovely

startouchedtrinity · 03/08/2007 22:27

I'm Victoria and when I was little I had a little cereal bowl with Victoire on it that my lovely nan brought back for me from a trip to Paris, Go for it, it' s a lovely name!

FrannyandZooey · 03/08/2007 22:27

I thought you were going to say Scorpius.

agnesnitt · 03/08/2007 22:32

If I met somebody with a wee one called Victoire I'd just assume they had French family or liked the French spelling of the name Victoria.

If you like it, stick with it.

Agnes

ScottishMummy · 03/08/2007 22:48

unknownrebelbang · 06/08/2007 23:12

Lol. As a teenager I had a vv good family friend who went to a different high school and her best friend at school was also named Vikki. (oddly we shared the same surname too)

Am curious to know approximate age Stealth?
