to ask how long amoxicillin takes to work for toothache?

Been prescribed this this morning. Only taken one tablet so far. Been given 5 days worth. I'm in agony. The dentist could see nothing wrong with my tooth on x-rays so gave me amoxicillin in the hope that it will work. Desperately hoping it does. Does anyone know how long they take to kick in?

You should feel some relief by this evening. Are you also taking a painkiller? Please take a painkiller - toothache is a whole type of extra evil.

HilaryBriss · 28/07/2019 13:15

Will they work for toothache? They are an antibiotic rather than a painkiller.

LIZS · 28/07/2019 13:17

You need to take painkillers as well. Ibruprofen , paracetamol/codeine or whatever you tolerate best.

hereforit · 28/07/2019 13:17

I'm taking naproxen. It doesn't help. Can't take much stronger as an breastfeeding. The amoxicillin is for a suspected infection

The pain is unbearable

Presumably the toothache is caused by infection.

bridgetreilly · 28/07/2019 13:20

The amoxycillin won't relieve the pain. Take paracetemol and ibuprofen for that. If there is an infection, I would expect it to take at least 2-3 days for the antibiotic to reduce it enough to stop the pain.

bridgetreilly · 28/07/2019 13:23

Also, try wrapping ice in a tea towel and holding it to your jaw. It will numb the area and relieve the pain. It's only a temporary fix, but sometimes that's the best you can do.

easyandy101 · 28/07/2019 13:25

Clove oil, if it is compatible with your breastfeeding

paffuto · 28/07/2019 13:26

Try a mouthwash of warm salt water, three or four times a day (old fashioned remedy) Sympathy OP, one of the worst things Flowers

HoneyWheeler · 28/07/2019 13:29

Have you got a cold by any chance? I've had severe tooth pain before with nothing showing up in the tooth - ended up being sinusitis!! In my experience within a day on antibiotics I began to feel better

JustAnotherPoster00 · 28/07/2019 13:30

Im there with you today OP but no antibiotics for me until tomorrow and this kicked off on friday night

So have these from me OP Flowers

hereforit · 28/07/2019 13:33

I'm so scared they're not going to work and I'm going to be stuck with this pain. Thanks for all the advice. It's my lower teeth and my gums are sore and it hurts to tap on the tooth so it's not sinusitis.

I'm afraid they didn't work for me until the last day of taking them...the pain was hideous and only cocodamal + ibuprofen touched it

hellenbackagen · 28/07/2019 18:02

is it infection? it did nothing for me. i had to take new antiiobtic that was two ab's combined for a tooth infection.

is it wisdom teeth?

spam390 · 28/07/2019 18:04

If no improvement in 48hrs, i.e 2 full days on antibiotic, then see GP or dentist as an emergency.

As others have said, take Ibuprofen and Paracetamol for pain. Do not exceed the total daily dose for either ! If that doesn't at least make pain bearable then see GP as an emergency for pain relief until antibiotics have a chance to kick in.

Wishing you all the very best x

RobinHumphries · 28/07/2019 18:06

I usually say 24 to 48 hours

GummyGoddess · 28/07/2019 18:07

I had them a few months ago, it fully stopped hurting the day after I took the last dose. I think I had a bit of relief at the end of the second day though.

You have my sympathies, I couldn't take anything more than ibuprofen as I'm breastfeeding and it was agony. I took cold packs to bed to lay my cheek on which helped a bit. I also borrowed one of my 1 year olds frozen teething toys Blush

iolaus · 28/07/2019 18:10

When I was put on antibiotics for a tooth issue I was told to give it 48 hours

HamsterHolder · 28/07/2019 18:16

I don't know about dental, but generally infections start to improve day 2-3 with antibiotics. Tooth ache is the worst, good luck!!! Make sure to take paracetamol 4-6hours (4 doses in 24 hours) - regular dosing works best. Don't take ibuprofen as you're already on naproxen.

paffuto · 29/07/2019 08:31

How is it this morning OP? Did you try the salt water mouthwash?

hereforit · 29/07/2019 08:48

I'm almost pain free! My tooth is still very painful when I eat but when I'm just sitting with my mouth open, no pain at all. Bloody hell that worked fast. Definitely had an infection then! Even worse that I couldnt get an appointment for 2 weeks 😬

I had a tooth infection in April this year and it was the worst pain I have ever had and that includes child birth, absolutely no painkiller touched it. I got metronidazole and I could feel the first hint of some relief a few hours after taking my second dose, after the third dose it had sufficiently improved that I managed to sleep a few hours after the pain had kept me awake for the two previous nights.
Fingers crossed it works as quickly for you.

Igneococcus · 29/07/2019 08:54

Great, it's such a relief when the pain goes.

paffuto · 29/07/2019 09:25

Great news. Carry on keeping your mouth open Grin hope it continues to heal. Have this Brew and drink through straw Wink
