In the last couple of years I have been getting spots on my face.

I bought new creams, drank more water, washed my pillowcase more often ... but today I realised that I have not washed my pillow once in the 10+ years since I bought it Blush

Anyway, I am off to buy a new pillow.

DP is horrified and I feel very very judged, but surely I am not alone in my slatternly ways?!

I don’t routinely wash pillows. I have if something horrible has landed on it, like dog vomit etc., but other than that I don’t bother.

ArtistOfTheFloatingWorld · 16/07/2019 10:53

Erm. I've never washed my pillow....

MyOpinionIsValid · 16/07/2019 10:53

Never, they have covers on, if you wash them, they die! Just buy new ones every 6 months or so

Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2019 10:54

In my experience pillows don't wash well. I use quilted pillow protectors and buy new pillows every now and again.

ArtistOfTheFloatingWorld · 16/07/2019 10:55

Buy new pillows every 6 months?!! Good lord! Really?

ReasonablyIntelligent · 16/07/2019 10:56

Wash the actual pillows or the pillow cases?

If I washed my pillows it would look like I murdered several chickens with my washing machine

foreverhanging · 16/07/2019 10:56

I wash the pillow cases regularly. But not the actual pillows!

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 16/07/2019 10:57

OP do you use pillow protectors?

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 10:57

Wash them every 6 months. Then I write on the label when I've washed it. Duvet I do every year, in Summer when it drys quickly on the line.

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 10:57

^Actual pillows. Pillow cases get washed every week.

PollyPelargonium52 · 16/07/2019 10:58

I buy new pillows once a year if that. I always ensure I have pillow protectors though.

cloudyinjune · 16/07/2019 10:59

I use foam pillows now which are much less likely to harvest dust mites etc.
Buying a new pillow every 6 months is outrageous

MumdayMania · 16/07/2019 10:59

Never
I don't know what a pillow protector is Confused
I buy new ones when they get too out of shape, every 2-4 years?

Reallybadidea · 16/07/2019 10:59

Why on earth would you buy new pillows every 6 months?! What a waste of money and the world's resources.

OP, I don't wash them either, it doesn't end well IME! As someone else said, I used protectors and wash these when they look minging regularly

DurhamDurham · 16/07/2019 11:01

I wash pillowcases every week but I've never washed an actual pillow. I use them until they're looking used (misshapen/stained 🤢) and then I buy new ones. I figure it's my dirt which doesn't bother me. I'd be aghast at dirty pillows in a hotel though.

proseccoandbooks · 16/07/2019 11:02

I take them to dry cleaners yearly, together with our duvet

Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2019 11:02

Lweji · 16/07/2019 11:07

I tend to do the sniff test.

Which means that I tend to wash pillows used by males a lot more.

My current pillows (foam type) are supposed to be anti-allergic but also wash and dry very quickly.

StrawberrySundance · 16/07/2019 11:07

Hmmmmmm thanks for the pillow protector tip.

Shall just buy a pillow protector instead of a new pillow? Or is it too late for me?

Shall I buy both?

I'm currently on the bus into town feeling very stressed about this!

I have never washed my duvet either, it is 4 years old at this stage...

We use pillow protectors and wash those instead.

Buddyelf · 16/07/2019 11:09

Never. They don't wash well at all. I've washed DD's when she vomited on it but it came out all misshapen and I ended up having to get rid and just buy a new one.
I just wash pillow cases regularly and buy new ones when needed.

Nesssie · 16/07/2019 11:10

Just stick them in the washing machine on a low spin then hang them out to dry! Then bash them back into shape.
Its never been a problem for me!

Lweji · 16/07/2019 11:10

Sorry, not foam. Not rigid in shape. Some sort of soft fibre. They don't change shape like some but are very soft.

If you've had a pillow for 10 years, it's probably best to buy a new one in any case.

1CarefulLadyOwner · 16/07/2019 11:11

I usually wash them once every 6 months. As a pp said, it can look like murder in the chicken slaughterhouse afterwards, but it is definitely worth it!

NationMcKinley · 16/07/2019 11:11

I’ve never washed a pillow either. We use pillow cases and thick pillow protectors which both get washed regularly
