If you smelt weed coming from your neighbour's house while you were out on your drive (weeding! Grin) - no suspicion of dealing or a cannabis farm or anything, just the clear indication that the neighbours were having a spliff in their house, would you expect the police to do anything about it if you called them?

Context - dh thinks the police would come round and search their house, I think the police have better things to do.

Given they rarely turn up after a burglary (or even during) I doubt they'd bother for this.

feathermucker · 12/07/2019 18:18

I think the Police have better things to do and wouldn't come straight out and search the house.

Unless the weed smoking is accompanied by anti-social behaviour etc, then I don't think they'd bother.

hidinginthenightgarden · 12/07/2019 18:19

Nope. Police are not interested in the little people.

Karigan195 · 12/07/2019 18:20

They would log it as intelligence, monitor and potentially use it for a stop, warrant or to catch the bigger fish at some point

lostelephant · 12/07/2019 18:20

I doubt they would do anything. If it's rented I would try and get in touch with their landlord, we're in a similar situation at the moment and that's the route I'm having to go down.

MyOpinionIsValid · 12/07/2019 18:21

Absolutely nothing - unless the owner is dealing or growing, then they wont bother at all about personal consumption

kierenthecommunity · 12/07/2019 18:22

They would need a warrant to search the house and the magistrate is unlikely to grant one based on one piece of information.

However if this is the twentieth piece of intelligence they have involving drugs at the address then that may be a bit different

Bookworm4 · 12/07/2019 18:23

Who cares, mind your own business.

babysharkah · 12/07/2019 18:24

Nothing. Let them get on with it.

Ozziewozzie · 12/07/2019 18:24

They can’t search the house without a warrant. They can’t obtain a warrant without very good and worthy reason ie, they have to build up intelligence to substantiate the warrant and provide that to the court to decide.
Cannabis is everywhere almost and the police simply can’t cope with it all. It’s the large dealers they want. The smokers of cannabis have little consequence usually.

RidgedPerfection · 12/07/2019 18:25

You could submit via Crimestoppers if you'd prefer an anonymous route. As others have said it may be one of many pieces of intel which collectively lead to action being taken.

Onesailwait · 12/07/2019 18:29

They are Just smoking some weed, not really the crime of the century. It will be legal soon anyway like it is where I live, its fab so many dispensaries so many awesome products

QueenAnneBoleyn · 12/07/2019 18:31

It’d be logged for intelligence purposes. That’s all unless there was more to it.

goodfornothinggnome · 12/07/2019 18:32

Is this really that much of a concern to you? Not trying to be funny, but really?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/07/2019 18:34

I think possesssion of cannabis for personal use is such a non-crime these days, rightly or wrongly, that they would do precisely nothing, except maybe record it in case there are multiple reports. I'm quite anti drugs but even I can't see any point in reporting a bit of smoking in their own home.

My 2 doors down neighbours were raided a few weeks ago for a report that they had a meth lab in there, street was full of police and police vans, forensics etc for a good 6 hours. They do act on the big stuff.

feathermucker · 12/07/2019 18:34

Do you want them to do something?

hazell42 · 12/07/2019 18:38

If the police raided every house where they could smell weed they would do nothing else.
Unless they are growing or dealing there is now a tacit understanding that they will do diddly squat about people smoking in their own home.
Cuts. Manpower. Losing battle

DoneLikeAKipper · 12/07/2019 18:39

My (thankful) now ex neighbour was smoking the heaviest shit known to man. They also had people knocking their door at all hours (literally in and out situation), I’m quite convinced they were dealing or even growing it. There was zero point calling the police, as others say it’s difficult enough getting them to respond to actual crimes. I recently saw a couple of coppers having a natter with each other on the street as some students openly smoked weed a few meters away from them, they just don’t care unless they catch weed on people when dealing with another crime (house raids for serious drugs or drink/drug driving for example).

I wish it didn’t bloody stink, otherwise I actually don’t think it’s worth bothering the police about.

Justgivemesomepeace · 12/07/2019 18:44

Nope they dont do anything. My sisters neighbour smokes weed under my nieces bedroom window all the time. Sis cant sit in her garden and niece has to keep her bedroom window shut. The neighbours on the other side suffer from it too. Police arent interested. They just have to keep going indoors when she comes out and shut the doors and windows. Not ideal in this weather but no choice unless she is happy to breath it in and have the house stink.

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/07/2019 18:47

If they did I'd call them every day and tell them my neighbour's son hides it at the bottom of the garden in the lilac tree.

WhatGetsMeDownMakesMeStronger · 12/07/2019 18:50

WOW just WOW would you really ring the police because someone is smoking a spiff 🤣😂

BouncyTigger85 · 12/07/2019 18:50

A couple of local PCSO visited us (one who unbeknownst to me was a friend’s mum) because someone reported a suspicious looking plant in our second floor flat window... they were Basil, thyme and chilli plants
I still wonder to this day if they told the person who complained Grin

justasking111 · 12/07/2019 18:52

There is another thread here. The tenants are dealing in plain sight, the police, council are not interested.

Onesailwait · 12/07/2019 18:52

This is why they need to Legalize It. I partake most days but rarely smoke anymore. I take it in capsule form or vape no smell doesn't piss off my neighbors!

greenwaterbottle · 12/07/2019 18:55

They've been in my neighbours house, for a separate issue, it stinks when you open the door. Nothing addressed.
