HUGE Black Flying Moth in my House

Chunkers · 05/07/2019 23:54

I saw a black shape flash past in the corner of my eye when I went to the bathroom to get ready for bed. Went to assure myself it was nothing (ha ha) and this black winged creature flew back and forth a couple of times.

It’s MASSIVE! At least 4 inches across and you can hear it’s wings beating. I’m so shocked, it must have been in the house for hours as I closed the windows mid afternoon.

I’ve managed to barricade myself into the bedroom and hope it’s not in here with me. Still need to clean my teeth etc. but WTF?? Longe TV is on, all lights blazing and it’s still going to be there in the morning.

It’s not an AIBU, but any ideas on how to usher it out safely (mine mostly)? I usually repatriate spiders to the great outdoors when necessary, but this is a whole different kettle of fish.

Is it a stag beetle?

Chunkers · 06/07/2019 00:54

Here it is! I got a video, but don’t know how to upload, so this is the best still I could get. I’ve just moved in, so not done any decorating yet!

It's a bat. Or an extremely discombobulated swift.

Turn the light off. Let it rest. It won't eat you.

QuestionableMouse · 06/07/2019 00:59

You've got a bat OP!

PawPawNoodle · 06/07/2019 01:00

Aww I feel bad for it! Nice wood floors by the way.

If it's any consolation OP we have moth nests by our home so every summer it turns into one big moth sanctuary indoors. Going to start charging rent this year.

Zippyx · 06/07/2019 01:01

Just looking at the picture makes me wanna scream, OP.

I think you should check into a hotel. Let the bat keep the house. Confused

SamBeckett · 06/07/2019 01:04

oohh that looks like a bat ! please be nice to it , open your front door any allow it to fly away .

serialtester · 06/07/2019 01:11

It's a bat!! You're so lucky! What are you calling him?!

OytheBumbler · 06/07/2019 01:12

It's definitely a bat. Open your doors/windows and it'll find its way out.

RightYesButNo · 06/07/2019 01:19

I would say with the position of the wings to the body and the shape of the wings, it looks like a bat? If we could see the video, I think most people who’ve seen bats could tell, because a bat flies a bit differently than anything else. It sort of... flap flap and slight up and down, instead of straight lines around like a bird or hovering by a light like a moth?? I’m shite at explaining Grin

heath48 · 06/07/2019 01:20

It’s a bat.

Reminds me of the Irish Family with a bat in the kitchen,”catch him Derry!”

Chunkers · 06/07/2019 01:22

Video! I’ve been leaving it to rest...

@SamBeckett - I don’t think it’s any of those, but thanks for looking.

You are all so kind, thanks for the support! Me and Brian appreciate it Grin

I’m in the UK if that helps with identification.

Chunkers · 06/07/2019 01:28

Actually, this is a better one.

HairyDogsInUnusualPlaces · 06/07/2019 01:29

I would say that's definitely a bat.
Would it help you to imagine it as a mouse with wings? Or do you not like mice either?
Open the front door, give it a few minutes and it'll fly away. You could stay outside to watch it fly away, so you knew when it left.

Oysterbabe · 06/07/2019 01:29

It's a bat. Get the doors open and it will leave.

Chunkers · 06/07/2019 01:30

Actually, it does look like Derry’s bat! Thanks for that.

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 06/07/2019 01:30

Yep a bat.

If you open the door and turn the lights off it'll probably fly out.

Chunkers · 06/07/2019 01:31

Trouble is, the only door is at the end of that corridor. Round 2 commencing!

HairyDogsInUnusualPlaces · 06/07/2019 01:37

They have great sonar, it wont get tangled in you, just walk confidently to the door and open it.

LeslieYep · 06/07/2019 01:38

Good luck! We had a pippestrelle (sp?) appear in our bedroom one night. Must have flown in while I was asleep then DH woke me frantically pointing at the skirting!
There was scaffolding around the house, so the local bat help said it might have been confused and flown in the window.

We had to catch it (big box and tea towel iirc) and keep it in the box, with the towel and a milk lid of water until morning.
We have a bat place near us, so we drove it there. They made sure it was okay and healthy, then brought it back to our garden for release.
So cute, but much prefer them outside!

Chunkers · 06/07/2019 01:51

Thanks all, I think it went under the door to the vestibule, so I will tackle it in the morning. I know it won’t like the daylight, but hopefully the bat cave is not too far away.

Bragging OP Grin

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 06/07/2019 02:03

I won’t post a picture, but a friend encountered a Polyphemus moth the other day. Caveat - we are in Canada.
