HUGE Black Flying Moth in my House

I saw a black shape flash past in the corner of my eye when I went to the bathroom to get ready for bed. Went to assure myself it was nothing (ha ha) and this black winged creature flew back and forth a couple of times.

It’s MASSIVE! At least 4 inches across and you can hear it’s wings beating. I’m so shocked, it must have been in the house for hours as I closed the windows mid afternoon.

I’ve managed to barricade myself into the bedroom and hope it’s not in here with me. Still need to clean my teeth etc. but WTF?? Longe TV is on, all lights blazing and it’s still going to be there in the morning.

It’s not an AIBU, but any ideas on how to usher it out safely (mine mostly)? I usually repatriate spiders to the great outdoors when necessary, but this is a whole different kettle of fish.

I hope he sleeps well and so do you.

SamBeckett · 06/07/2019 02:19

I hope you and Brian are very happy together Grin
let us know how you go on , I recon he must have a cave / tree/ roost somewhere near by . perhaps you could contact your local bat rescue centre and learn a bit more about them so you can leave the right food out for him .

WELL! Couldn’t sleep, got up about an hour ago, kind of pre dawn to have a go at getting him out before full daylight hit.

I’ll cut out all the theatrics. Found him exactly where I saw him crawling under the door, tucked in a little ball right in the corner of the door jam. I expected him to flap about, but he was still. Got the front door open, still no movement. Got some water and tried to sprinkle a bit on him, nothing... so I was sure he was dead, but just in case, left a box in front of him so he didn’t fly back into the house and left a lid of water beside him.

Went back about 15 mins later and he’s gone! I’m so chuffed he didn’t die, he was teeny tiny and furry (still gives me the shivers though).

I’m Batman! (said in that voice).

He's so cute! Well done on getting him out safely.

BreakfastAtLitanies · 06/07/2019 05:34

Well done OP you're so brave! Grin he's adorable!

Dieu · 06/07/2019 07:57

Oh God, I find moths so difficult to cope with. Bizarrely, I'm ok with butterflies though Hmm

HairyDogsInUnusualPlaces · 06/07/2019 10:11

Great result. Glad he got away safely. The good news is, if you've got bats, you're unlikely to hvae much of a moth problem, as they eat moths, so that's good. Wink

The German for Bat is Die Fledermaus. The Flutter Mouse.

Makes sense once you actually see them, doesn't it?

Oysterbabe · 06/07/2019 21:08

I love German. My favourite animal name is the swamp, shelled toad. Or a terrapin as we'd call it Smile

Simply jump on its back and fly off to the moon.
