To wear ankle socks with trainers?

I've noticed Anna Whitehouse doing this and think it looks great (on her anyway!). She often wears a nice pair of trainers with normal ankle socks, paired with a dress or a cropped trouser leg, so the sock is fully visible and part of the outfit.
I hate "hidden" trainer socks that cling into your foot for dear life and need to be rescued from having slipped off your heel a million times a day (or is that just me?!)...
However I am somewhat (very) challenged in the style department and fear if I did "visible sock with trainer" I would just end up looking like I've given up or like I am trying too hard?!
I've been thinking of treating myself to a new pair of trainers...
Could this work for a "normal" non "insta ready" mum who is a bit frazzled, not very fashionable, and often looks like she got dressed in the dark?

It’s the norm where I am amongst anyone under 30. No one wears trainer socks anymore.

Boyskeepswinging · 30/06/2019 13:06

I know what you mean about the trainer liners but there are some which don't keep slipping down. My best ones are from Next. Sorry that doesn't answer your question!

itssquidstella · 30/06/2019 13:08

I like the frilly-edged ankle socks like the ones I wore in primary school - they seem to be back in fashion!

Ifeelbloodyawful · 30/06/2019 13:10

Ooh 50/50 in my first poll!

Honestly the teenagers around here are doing this. I'm 35 and too old for keeping up with trends.

yulet · 30/06/2019 13:11

Just wear socks and be comfortable!

Ifeelbloodyawful · 30/06/2019 13:11

@Soola I'm a bit more than 30. Shit, how old is Anna? I'd been labouring unde the illusion she was older than me, as she appears to be a proper adult. Shock

YANBU to wear them. I'm not brave enough though. I know what you mean about other people looking good in them but I don't think I'm stylish enough. But then I don't think anyone apart from you will even notice

Tootytata · 30/06/2019 13:12

I never bother with trends either. Never had an issue with trainer socks slipping off so I wear them! The thought of wearing trainers without socks is quite grim Confused and smelly!

Isleepinahedgefund · 30/06/2019 13:12

My 7 yr old is with you all the way with this. And socks with sandals. Socks with any footwear, in fact.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/06/2019 13:12

I wear no socks, Dd is 17 and wears trainer socks.
I don't like the ankle sock look, but if you do then go for it.

I concur!

I'm working on not giving a shit and just wearing what I want. Life really is too short. Not 100% there yet though.

I assume one needs naice, plain socks to stand a chance of looking cool. Not ancient, faded, bobbly ones with sagging elastic? Grin

YANBU. This is not a new or revolutionary thing. YABU to ask though...... lots of people wear trainers with ankle socks.

Bluerussian · 30/06/2019 13:23

I've always worn socks with trainers, it's uncomfortable not to if you have your trainers on for a long time. No one sees them under trousers, I must admit I don't wear trainers with a skirt or dress but nothing wrong if you do.

BustedDreams · 30/06/2019 13:25

I’m all for wearing whatever floats your boat. If you like it & it feels comfortable wear whatever you want.

There are no rules Grin

Nautiloid · 30/06/2019 13:28

As I get older, comfort is the most important thing. Trainer socks are the devil's work.

wellbuggerme · 30/06/2019 13:28

i`ve been wearing proper ankle socks with trainers or whatever shores for years. Ahead of the trend me ;)

Tryingtoworkitoutagain · 30/06/2019 13:30

I wore socks and trainers just yesterday ! I wear them a lot (I’m in my 30s) I say go for t

SpoonBlender · 30/06/2019 13:48

Wear whatever socks you like. I've never understood people's agonising about this utterly insignificant thing.

Except with sandals. That's a hangable offence, obviously.

PirateOfPenzance · 30/06/2019 13:50

Have also been wearing them with socks for years

I tend to think if you wait long enough, you eventually come back on trend 😂

sevenoftwelve · 30/06/2019 13:53

Do men have this dilemma?

Or is it just western women who are supposed to wear invisible socks?

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/06/2019 13:54

I've always worn ankle socks with trainers, even if I'm wearing shorts, I'm much older than 30 Blush

VladmirsPoutine · 30/06/2019 13:57

I love this look. I wear yellow/white socks that come up over my converse and cropped trousers. Match with a clashing coloured top if you're feeling very brave Grin

All that aside. Just wear whatever you feel comfortable in. My usual look is grey skinny jeans, black t-shirt and blazer. I'm far too old to be worrying about what anyone thinks of my sartorial choices. If I feel like I look good then that's it.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/06/2019 14:04

For running I wear normal ankle socks with trainers - I cannot be doing with stopping mid-run to retrieve an errant sock.

For non-sport wear, I don't wear socks at all. I just lob my trainers in the washing machine occasionally to give them a wash from having my bare feet in them. If I wanted/needed to wear socks, it would be trainer socks so they don't show. I'm all for aesthetics and Anna Wintour can get away with a lot that I cannot Grin
