To ask if it's a pain to use reusable coffee mugs?

I've finally bought myself a nice reusable coffee mug but now I'm trying to figure out which size of coffee to order in different places and worry it'll be a faff for whoever's serving me.

Any tips on making it as straightforward as possible?

Ooh I've been wondering about this. I was given a nice one through work, but I haven't used it yet because I'm not sure who would fill it up or what size to ask for.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 23/06/2019 18:11

It would be more of a faff if the world heated up so much that humans couldn't live here though hey? 🤷🏻‍♀️

DearTeddyRobinson · 23/06/2019 18:12

You just hand it over at the counter, order whatever you like, and they will fill it accordingly. Eg I order a black americano but ask them to leave enough room for me to add my own milk. Enjoy the discount (you usually get some money off for using your own cup) and the caffeine hit!

21daysofsummer · 23/06/2019 18:13

Agreed, I have no idea what size to order.

Yesbutnobutmaybe · 23/06/2019 18:13

Most of the coffee places have the sizes on their websites so if you know what size your cup is you can work it out fairly easily.

dudsville · 23/06/2019 18:14

The problem with reusable cups is that they have to be carried, always, so that you have it for the moments you want it. Many people don't carry bags. It's not the solution.

This might help:

Fakenametodayhey · 23/06/2019 18:15

Yeah just show the cup first and they will decide. Usually a small with discount.

TooManyPaws · 23/06/2019 18:16

Our works canteens will not supply anyone with a non-reusable mug, only china cups for visitors. You just hand it over and ask for what you want such as an Americano, latte., etc, then they charge you for your size of mug. It really is incredibly easy, particularly if you're not sure what their sizes are in reality.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 23/06/2019 18:16

@SmiledWithTheRisingSun they were asking for advice on something that's better for the environment not saying they didn't want to do it. Hmm

Sooooozie · 23/06/2019 18:16

Dudsville it's the solution for everyone who does carry a bag - it's hardly an inconvenience. Far better than the hideously damaging alternative.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 23/06/2019 18:16

Completely fucking useless comment

TooManyPaws · 23/06/2019 18:17

And you can actually buy collapsible mugs that will fit into a bag or pocket.

Sandybval · 23/06/2019 18:18

You get used to it soon enough, and they will know what size will fit in your cup. I have a collapsible one as has been mentioned in the thread, and just leave it in my handbag just in case! The discount you get on drinks pays for the cup soon enough as well.

Outsomnia · 23/06/2019 18:20

I have these.

Collapsible, take up no space (until they are filled!). Hand it over, ask for your drink of choice, pay and go.

OR..... de collapse it, fill it from home and off you go.

SpangledBoots · 23/06/2019 18:22

Thanks for the replies - I'll try this tomorrow!

I buy a lot of coffees and bottles of sparkling water so switching to a reusable mug and water cooler/tap water. Not a pain for me at all but I just don't want to piss off the baristas!

OP posts:
TheOpeningActofSpring · 23/06/2019 18:25

Baristas will be pretty used to this by now. They just make the appropriate amount.

SpangledBoots · 23/06/2019 18:28

For anyone who's interested, it's this mug: www.foyles.co.uk/witem/food-drink/little-boy-blue-12oz-coffee-cup,frank-green-9786001012068

I carry a big bag to work every day so no issues with space!

Outsomnia · 23/06/2019 18:30

Since we are on the subject. What is your favourite coffee?

Mine is latte with caramel shot to go. When in a coffee shop it is flat white.

At home it is Americano with full fat milk to top up.

No sugar taken, but I suppose who cares!

MatildaTheCat · 23/06/2019 18:32

It couldn’t be easier. Just hand it over. I have a collapsible cup that fits in most small handbags. I pop it into one of those little bags that come with Uniqlo jackets to stop it dripping on my stuff.

SkintAsASkintThing · 23/06/2019 18:32

I like the look of the collapsible ones........I don't buy takeout coffee as I prefer a proper cup but would consider one of those.

sleepwhenidie · 23/06/2019 18:34

I have a smallish one (8oz I think) because I usually get a flat white. What do you usually get? Get a cup that fits that 😊

Sugaronjam · 23/06/2019 18:56

12oz is a small cup size.

Overprotective007 · 23/06/2019 19:00

And what about washing it out? Do they give it a rinse before filling or do you ask for that?

bitchfromhell · 23/06/2019 19:02

It's an arse ache at the drive through. They never seem to fathom that they can make it in the big metal jug thingy and then pour when you get to the appropriate window. I always feel awkward if there's a queue. Or they make it in a reusable cup then pour it in Hmm
