to think you indicate BEFORE you slow down?!

As opposed to slowing down for what feels like an hour or just slamming the brakes on and then indicating as a bloody afterthought! (Or, even worse, not indicating at all?!)

Sounds like you drive too close tbh. People have all sorts of reasons to slow or stop suddenly, none of which require indicating. You have to be prepared for them all.

user1483387154 · 20/06/2019 14:58

it shouldnt be a problem whether they indicate first or slow down first. If it is a problem for you then you need to stop driving so close or so fast

Sirzy · 20/06/2019 14:59

A lot of drivers do seem to forget the Mirror, Signal part of mirror, signal, manoeuvre

GabriellaMontez · 20/06/2019 15:01

Yanbu. That us the considerate, couteous way to drive. I think the op knows that sometimes we have to stop unexpectedly which is quite different.

Sicario · 20/06/2019 15:01

My husband likes to indicate just as he is taking the turn, therefore unleashing the element of surprise to other delighted road users.

Hullabaloo31 · 20/06/2019 15:04

I don't think the OP is an idiot, signal should always come before manoeuvre, and braking/slowing is part of the manoeuvre.

Mxyzptlk · 20/06/2019 15:04

Mirror
Signal
Manoeuvre

yanbu

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/06/2019 15:27

Hadn't you realised? Indicators are there to explain the manoeuvre you have just completed. You didn't think they were there to warn people what you were about to do, did you?

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2019 15:34

I always follow the seconds rule - I absolutely do not drive to close (promise!)

It seems to be this week, I’ve just had people every bloody day stop suddenly and then indicate. It doesn’t “matter” because I am not slamming my breaks on, it just gives me the rage (disclaimer: also have PMS)

OP posts:
LakieLady · 20/06/2019 15:38

I think indicating is a dying art. Hardly anyone round my way bothers to indicate at roundabouts, and at the T-junction near my house, I'm often behind drivers who are stationary in the middle of the lane and not indicating.

I genuinely have no idea if they're turning left or right.

Papergirl1968 · 20/06/2019 15:43

I hate it when people do this - when they either slow down for ages before indicating and turning, or suddenly jam the brakes on, indicate and turn all in one go.
I guess most of us do it occasionally if we don’t know where we’re going, but there are people who do it all the time.
I also hate it when people don’t indicate on roundabouts.
Agree with the pp who said using indicators is dying out.

TruffleShuffles · 20/06/2019 15:48

It infuriates me when people randomly brake, as this is what they are doing before finally indicating when they are turning or pulling over. It confuses other road users as to what they are doing. As other pp have pointed out it is mirror, signal then manoeuvre, the braking is part of the manoeuvre.

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2019 15:49

I also hate it when people don’t indicate on roundabouts.

Yes!!!!! Someone did this to me today and I beeped at her when I realised I had needlessly waited for her as I didn’t realise she was indicating, and she stuck her fingers up at me! I really hope indicating isn’t dying out - it’s very important

OP posts:
swingofthings · 20/06/2019 15:53

Yes yes and yes! I can't fathom why anyone breaking, manoeuvring into the turning lane then stop to wait for green light think that indicating at this stage is any helpful to the car behind yet it happens every day!

TruffleShuffles · 20/06/2019 15:55

I don’t even pay attention to indicators on islands anymore as just as many people use them incorrectly as don’t use them at all. I very rarely do a longer journey without seeing someone sailing past exits with their left indicator on as if they are about to leave the island but carry on by.

lhastingsmua · 20/06/2019 16:10

Unfortunately there’s plenty of drivers that ‘forget’ to indicate, so you have to be on the ball at all times. If you rear ended them, you’d be considered to be the party at fault under most circumstances.

PettyContractor · 20/06/2019 16:16

it shouldnt be a problem whether they indicate first or slow down first. If it is a problem for you then you need to stop driving so close or so fast

It is a problem, because if you knew they were going to turn at the earliest opportunity that could be communicated, you might immediately take that into account. For example by changing lane, when a temporary opportunity presented itself.

SemperIdem · 20/06/2019 16:17

Yanbu.

As others have said, it’s mirror, signal, manoeuvre.

There are so many people driving in unsafe ways without realising.

omione · 20/06/2019 16:46

Its when people slam on the brakes to get into filter lanes that gets on my wick, the bloody filter lane is there for you to move into then slow down

Gatehouse77 · 20/06/2019 16:49

I regularly rant at the number of drivers who are incapable/lazy/too arrogant to indicate themselves both on and off roundabouts. Including DH at times 🤬

blackteasplease · 20/06/2019 16:51

Yanbu- mirror signal maneovre as others habe said.

I also agree re indicating off roundabouts.

Also if you are using a roundabout to turn all the way around and go back the way you came, make this really clear with the line you take etc

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2019 16:56

the bloody filter lane is there for you to move into then slow down

THISSSSSS

YANBU
You are soooooo right OP.

Indicator use is getting worse generally. I'm starting to think new BMWs and Audis don't even come with indicators these days.

Peterpiperpickedwrong · 20/06/2019 17:24

YANBU.

Some drivers shouldn’t be on the road. Including the silly cow that overtook me yesterday as I was passing an exit off a 70mph dual carriageway (whilst I was doing 70mph) and then immediately pulled in front of me and pulled off at the exit meaning I had to slam on so she didn’t take me out!
AND the dick that was in the wrong lane of the roundabout this morning - the arrows are painted in the actual road FFS showing which exit you need to take if you are in that lane. Grrrrrr.

People who slow down and then decide to let me know where they are going get on my pip.

Do they not teach Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre anymore?

cloudyinjune · 20/06/2019 17:40

Why don't people use indicators?!!!! Particularly at roundabouts!!!
WHY?!!
