to think you indicate BEFORE you slow down?!

As opposed to slowing down for what feels like an hour or just slamming the brakes on and then indicating as a bloody afterthought! (Or, even worse, not indicating at all?!)

To be fair, not all manoeuvres require signals. Traffic lights where the only option is straight, or slowing to avoid a pedestrian or similar wouldn't require the use of indicators.

megletthesecond · 20/06/2019 17:49

Yanbu.

Mirror, signal, manoeuvre. The slowing down is the manoeuvre.

ChocOrCheese · 20/06/2019 17:50

Just reading this thread is giving me road rage.

Pinkmouse6 · 20/06/2019 17:51

YANBU, people who don’t indicate are amongst the worst and most dangerous of drivers. It’s dangerous to other road users and also can be dangerous to pedestrians. I’ve been in a situation before where a car turned and almost ploughed straight into me as a pedestrian because they didn’t indicate.

Mirrors, signal, manoeuvre is one of the first things you are taught yet seemingly is the first thing drivers forget...

Totur · 20/06/2019 17:53

I don't know how half the drivers in London managed to get licenses. The driving is ridiculous!
My personal bugbear is drivers pulling out in front of you at the last minute when you've the right of way.

Daygals · 20/06/2019 17:56

Advanced driving courses teach that you should slow down if someones driving too close - if they arent allowing stopping distance you need to allow extra. So if you find people slow down a lot in front of you......

Arsparsley · 20/06/2019 17:56

I don’t think they do! I’m really taken aback by how prevalent it is for drivers ( judging by my side glances, of all ages) not to signal at all. On motorways this is now quite scary . Just recently a van pulled into my lane with no warning; I was about to accelerate to overtake, so this was really frightening.
I do wonder if the apparent disregard for rules eg overtaking are going to lead to horrendous accidents before any steps are taken to enforce the existing Highway Code.

amusedbush · 20/06/2019 17:58

I regularly rant at the number of drivers who are incapable/lazy/too arrogant to indicate themselves both on and off roundabouts.

DH doesn't drive (he has never been in the driver's seat of a car in his life) but he's a postman and spends time every day in a Royal Mail van with different colleagues driving.

He recently laughed at me for indicating off a roundabout, and for indicating that I was going to go around a bus which was sticking out into my lane. Apparently I don't need to indicate so much and "nobody else does". Good to know that our local postmen drive like arseholes!

M4MMY · 20/06/2019 18:08

Picking up on something someone else said further up the thread about stopping...

After you check your mirrors, you hit the brake (causing your brake lights to come on and signal to those behind you!) and then the car slows. So in that instance, it's not that you don't need to signal (you do!) or that slowing/stopping isn't a manoeuvre (it is!), it's that when you hit the brake, your signal is automatic. So you can't NOT signal in that instance. If only turning right/left was the same!

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2019 18:08

So if you find people slow down a lot in front of you......

Where did I say that people slow down a lot in front of me, aside from just before a manoeuvre?

Brings me to my other bugbear - people doing 10 miles + below the speed limit with visibility is good and conditions are clear - SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROADS IF NOT COMFORTABLE AT ALL LEGAL SPEEDS.

What?

OP posts:
BogglesGoggles · 20/06/2019 18:12

YY very annoying.

BogglesGoggles · 20/06/2019 18:13

Mammy is saying that in an emergency stop your break lights form the signal component.

crispysausagerolls · 20/06/2019 18:27

Ahh, gotcha!

YANBU, OP. Sometimes I feel like I'm in the minority on the roads, in that I signal very time it's necessary. So many people swan around without bothering their arse, like it's so much effort. So i like seeing thrwads like these where other people appreciate an indicator! I was on the motorway today, and there was one particular car which must have gone into the right lane overtake and back to the left around 5 times without indicating once in the time I saw him.

origamiunicorn · 20/06/2019 19:52

So many drivers think an indicator is a summariser. No point in using it as you're turning/after you've turned the corner.

This is even more annoying as a pedestrian. People don't slow down here, they just slam it around the corner, indicating as they turn.

BlueCornishPixie · 20/06/2019 20:04

I swear people just don't know how to use indicators these days

What pissed me off on motorways is when people change lane into your braking distance, and start indicating half way through, forcing you to slam your brakes and you didn't even know it was coming. Just fucking indicate and then move.

Or people who use indicators as a "let me in". The amount of drivers who think indicating means that you have to let them into your lane, like almost an "I am going to move I don't give a shit if you are in my way". I will let someone in if I can but it gets me if they think indicate means they can force themselves in.

Or roundabouts and they don't indicate and then you miss and opportunity to go Angry

Its just annoying, it's not difficult, indicate before you make the move.

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 20/06/2019 20:25

I think the new driving test is based more on mind reading ability than mirror, signal, manoeuvre.

M4MMY · 21/06/2019 02:12

Hi,

Sorry my post was confusing but yes, Boggles, that's what I meant in a nutshell. The post I was replying to most specifically was the one from Adaline at 17.46 who stated that "not all manoeuvres require signals". Yes they do!! It's just that in the example she described, the signal is automatically carried out. But you should ALWAYS let other road users know your intentions.
