I'm getting the contraceptive implant tomorrow

Made the decision as I keep forgetting/missing my Yasmin daily pill (thanks depression!) can you guys reassure me it'll be fine? I'm so scared it will hurt and I'll get an infection and bad side effects.

If you've had it done how was it for you? And how did you feel afterwards?

Thank you, I'm so scared!

Best thing I've ever had done! It hurts about the same as getting an injection including afterwards! I don't really have periods anymore, no signs of them arriving when they do. Would highly recommend!

MrsMiggins37 · 11/06/2019 19:44

I’ve had 3.

Getting it in is fine but you can’t get it wet for a few days afterwards.

My first two were fine. The thief turned me into a fucking hormonal psycho and I had it out after a year.

MrsMiggins37 · 11/06/2019 19:44

*third

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:44

@kshaw that's great to hear as I have awfully painful periods at the moment so the fact it could reduce/get rid of them is amazing! Did you feel sick afterwards?

Thanks for replying, I'm so scared 😂

Postmanbear · 11/06/2019 19:44

Did not hurt at all but did leave a big bruise for a week or so. No problems so far!

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:45

@Postmanbear That's great! Yeah the nurse mentioned bruising, any other side effects? Do you still get periods? (Sorry if TMI!)

MrsMiggins37 · 11/06/2019 19:45

It certainly worked well as a contraceptive as my sex drive completely fell off a cliff.

MrsElizabethShelby · 11/06/2019 19:45

Oh it was horrific, the pain when it went in was like being stabbed with a knife and I had a black bruise the size of a Bramley apple on the underside of my arm for a week!

The side effects were horrific, sore swollen vulva from the large amount of progesterone meant no sex as was very sore and had discharge afterwards and the mood swings!

Needless to say had it out and have been so much better since.

Rtmhwales · 11/06/2019 19:45

It's super easy and quick. I've also had three. It got rid of my periods. No pain upon implant other than the quick pinch of the needle. No bad reaction for me, no bruising, no nausea. Easiest thing.

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:45

@MrsMiggins37 Oh! How did you tell it was affecting you? I get bad PMS at the moment so I can never tell if I'm acting crazy or not 😂

EustaciaPieface · 11/06/2019 19:46

I’m on to my fourth! Been on it happily for years. It’s a really simple procedure, getting it out is a little uncomfortable but I wouldn’t change it for any alternative.Good luck!

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:46

@MrsMiggins37 I'm sorry to hear that, I don't have one either due to my anti depressants, it's so hard isn't it.

OP posts:
MrsMiggins37 · 11/06/2019 19:46

I still had periods but they were more infrequent. They weren’t heavy but mine have never really been heavy anyway.

JazzyJelly · 11/06/2019 19:46

I'm on my fourth. Love it. Don't have anything to remember, covered if I'm sick, ten minutes in and out once every 3 years. Take a cardigan to cover up afterwards and you'll be fine.

Bobbindobbin · 11/06/2019 19:46

Mine sent me loopy, sobbing, crying shouting. I begged to have to taken away xx

CannonCaboodle · 11/06/2019 19:46

It's brilliant. Doesn't hurt at all after local anaesthetic goes in.

For the first few days the actual site was a little itchy. (Apparently normal.) Now I don't even think about it. I don't have periods anymore.
You will be fine.

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:47

@MrsElizabethShelby Eek! That's scary, at least if the side effects are that bad I can have it taken out straight away.

OP posts:
Coldhandscoldheart · 11/06/2019 19:48

It was fine, but itched like a bitch for about a week and was too sore to scratch,

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:48

@Rtmhwales That sounds amazing, I hope it's the same for me! Smile
Getting rid of my period cramps & PMS would be a lifesaver, I get so sick every month on my period.Sad

MrsMiggins37 · 11/06/2019 19:48

There was just a point I realised it couldn’t be anything else. I was depressed and would cry for days on end for no reason. Within a few days of having it out I felt immeasurably better. Now I have the menopause looming the mood swings are back mind you lol!

Pinkmouse6 · 11/06/2019 19:48

Didn’t hurt going in (they numb it) but did have a significant bruise around it for some time.

I hated it personally but obviously everyone is different. It made my sex drive disappear entirely and caused me to bleed every day it was in. I ended up crying and begging for it to be removed which they did. Still have a tiny scar but on the inside of my arm so no biggie. Wouldn’t do it again.

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:49

@EustaciaPieface Thank you! I'm feeling much more brave now after these success stories Smile bringing my boyfriend along with me for moral support (and so he can see what I have to go through!Grin)

3boysandabump · 11/06/2019 19:49

The anaesthetic is all you feel. I did bruise a lot after but I'm a bruiser anyway.

I have my second one in at the minute. Didn't have any periods with the first and haven't had any so far with this one other than a bit of spotting when it went in.

lonelysleep · 11/06/2019 19:49

@JazzyJelly It sounds amazing! Thanks for your feedback :)

I’d have gouged mine out myself if the FPC has said no! I had heard some places can be arsey about taking it out early due to the fact it’s quite expensive
