To be genuinely galled that that Trump is getting a state visit.

I'm no royalist but why is Trump being allowed to have all the pomp and ceremony of a state visit? It's not a regular tradition, he would be only the third US president to have one and "fingers desperately crossed" he'll be out of office next year and facing criminal investigations.

Then there's the fact that William, Harry and Kate will be rolled out to play nice with him and his grifter family, I noticed all his kids are coming along, I'm sure Ivanka is desperately looking forward to photo ops with the young royals. Trump has already called Meghan nasty in the past 24 hours, he has famously made disgusting sexual comments about Princess Diana before yet he gets to be graciously hosted by her sons.

There is no practical point to him coming, there is no trade deal currently happening, May is effectively out of office (I know this was planned before Brexit crap got even worse) and we know Trump will likely insult May, Mayor Khan and other public figures. He'll make inappropriate suggestions publicly that Farage should lead negotiations, the UK should leave with no deal etc.

Basically it will a be a shit show where I feel we are debasing ourselves as a nation to this awful man. I promise I don't really spend my days fixated on this stuff but when I took a few moments this morning to think about this visit I realised I have the rage about this! Thank God for Mumsnet for being a venue to let me rant Grin

It's disgusting. Yanbu. It's actually made me feel very very depressed this weekend. He's a fucking racist, mysogynist, rapist !!

Rainbunny · 02/06/2019 10:11

I blame May for this! There's no way the Queen decided she wanted him to visit. May was still pathetically hopeful that she could please Trump with some shiny troop parades and the royals, apart from anything else she was stupid to think it would count for anything given his track record. He'll lap up all the attention and the pomp and the photo ops and still insult May and our country. It's truly vomit inducing!

It's entirely down to the government - the Queen gets no say in state visits.

Rockbird · 02/06/2019 10:16

I'm pissed off too. Imagine how the Queen feels. She's got to entertain the odious man.

Lypajolu · 02/06/2019 10:16

I'm thoroughly disgusted by this farce and wonder just how much are the public going to have to pay to host this circus??

ADarkandStormyKnight · 02/06/2019 10:18

I imagine desperation for a trade deal is at the bottom of it. And Trump can smell blood.

PompeyBez · 02/06/2019 10:27

I passed the venue on Friday, and it's already chaos. Police all over the place, road closures, and the actual event itself is fenced off so not entirely sure if the public can join in or not. I think it's a real shame that trump's visit is going to overshadow the main focus of the event. It just seems disrespectul to the vets and their families

Rainbunny · 02/06/2019 10:28

My only forlorn hope is that neither William, Harry or Kate smile at any point in their interactions or photos with the Trump gang. They should be dignified and gracious hosts but I'm desperately hoping that they subtly convey their distaste by never smiling.

I also wonder if Ivanka will show up in a tiara? Probably not but you know she really really wants to!

He's an awful man. I read in Michelle Obama's book that they got along well with the royals. The Obama's are in a completely different league from Trump.

I'm really hoping the photos show the royals contempt for him. And that Prince Phillip is allowed to drive Trump.

hilbobaggins · 02/06/2019 10:33

The Queen will be fine.

I know Trump’s a divisive figure but I don’t really get the extreme angst about his visit. Were you this concerned about the state visits of Mugabe, Putin, King Abdullah and Xi Jinping?

Justanotherlurker · 02/06/2019 10:44

Were you this concerned about the state visits of Mugabe, Putin, King Abdullah and Xi Jinping?

No they weren't its just on the level of "Orange man bad"

tate visits to the Uk by questionable countries:

October 2010 - Qater - death penalty for homosexuality

November 2012 Kuwait - fine or up to six years in jail

may 2013 UAE - prison / occasional reports of chemical castration (deportation for foreigners)

2015 - China - surprisingly liberal opinion of gay rights considering it's china .. have however decided to bring back concentration camps for Muslims (oh and the social credit score stuff is evil)

lets not pretend trump is any way worse than he is. I'm not an advocate of his but this is essentially a state visit by one of our major allies, not many where bothered that Macron welcomed him, we have been doing diplomacy with a peg on our nose for years, the same as every other country

Rainbunny · 02/06/2019 10:46

"I know Trump’s a divisive figure but I don’t really get the extreme angst about his visit. Were you this concerned about the state visits of Mugabe, Putin, King Abdullah and Xi Jinping?"

Well yes actually and I wish none of those visits had happened. The argument that "just because other awful people have been given state visits so this awful person is fine" is a terrible argument. We can always be a better nation and the need to make a trade deal is never contingent on a state visit. This was just a desperate attempt to soften Trump up when all evidence that it could work is to the contrary..

One thing that the people you listed did not do as far as I'm aware, was to insult their hosts when they visited, make vulgar public sexual comments about a member of the royal family or even insult the newest member of the royals barely two days before visiting.

I say let Prince Phillip at him. And William and Harry - the recent reports of the comments about Diana and Meghan should give them something to chat about.

I thing his helicopters were test buzzing over me on Friday. He flew over us last time - I stood on the balcony and watched (I may have flipped him the bird too).

MissConductUS · 02/06/2019 10:50

Is there room for him in the Tower of London? We'll pay any reasonable rent to put him up there. Can we do a two year imprisonment lease?

Grin
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/06/2019 10:51

And there were anti Xi protests. I joined by accident - I didn’t know the visit was on and took a shortcut across the mall and am rather nosey so hung around to see what the crowds were all about. Mostly Chinese protestors. Amnesty, etc not there.

lyralalala · 02/06/2019 10:53

Given that the royal family forced smiles through the visit of Ceausescu there's no chance it won't be full smiles and (faked if needed) joviality through this visit.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/06/2019 10:54

Didn’t the queen hide behind a bush when she saw them walking in her garden?

Rainbunny · 02/06/2019 10:56

"Given that the royal family forced smiles through the visit of Ceausescu there's no chance it won't be full smiles and (faked if needed) joviality through this visit."

Well I'm advocating for a royal rebellion of NOT smiling, I mean who's going to tell them off for looking serious? Kate I hope you're reading this!

tearinmybeer · 02/06/2019 11:03

??? They're peas in the same pod. They can have a good ol' laugh about women's genitals and brown people.

Dual citizen here. Disgusted, protesting on Tuesday, but ultimately just tired and sick of both governments.

DestinyIsCallingMe · 02/06/2019 11:05

Did you see the Sky News ‘trailer’ for it, though? That did make me laugh...

CoffeeToffeeFudge · 02/06/2019 11:06

Wow, OP....you think routinely putting gay people to death is the same as making some remark about Meghan Markle? Get real.

Trump isn’t being given this welcome because he’s a wonderful person but because he’s the president, and therefore elected representative, of our biggest ally.

In any event, were you shouting about Mugabe when he visited? A man responsible for some of the most horrific human rights abuses in recent years? I doubt it. Not quite so fashionable to protest him as it is Trump, eh?

TooTrueToBeGood · 02/06/2019 11:12

It's not a regular tradition, he would be only the third US president to have one

And the other two were Obama and George W so it is a regular tradition albeit a fairly recent one. I cannot stand Trump. He is a vile, mysoginistic, racist, fascist bully. He is also president of the USA however and, as they say in the forces, you salute the rank not the man.

floraloctopus · 02/06/2019 11:16

He's a fucking racist, mysogynist

.....and that's on a good day.

He'll be here and Johnson and Farage will be sucking up to him massively. He's only going to be here because of the 'special relationship'

LucheroTena · 02/06/2019 11:17

The Queen will be fine, she’s been used to entertaining far worse.

It’s the sight of the odious Tory leadership candidates and Farage toadying up to the Orange One that will stick in my craw.

Kaddm · 02/06/2019 11:18

He is the president of the USA. We do not vote in the US, we have to respect what they voted and maintain good relations with superpowers.
