To be genuinely galled that that Trump is getting a state visit.

I'm no royalist but why is Trump being allowed to have all the pomp and ceremony of a state visit? It's not a regular tradition, he would be only the third US president to have one and "fingers desperately crossed" he'll be out of office next year and facing criminal investigations.

Then there's the fact that William, Harry and Kate will be rolled out to play nice with him and his grifter family, I noticed all his kids are coming along, I'm sure Ivanka is desperately looking forward to photo ops with the young royals. Trump has already called Meghan nasty in the past 24 hours, he has famously made disgusting sexual comments about Princess Diana before yet he gets to be graciously hosted by her sons.

There is no practical point to him coming, there is no trade deal currently happening, May is effectively out of office (I know this was planned before Brexit crap got even worse) and we know Trump will likely insult May, Mayor Khan and other public figures. He'll make inappropriate suggestions publicly that Farage should lead negotiations, the UK should leave with no deal etc.

Basically it will a be a shit show where I feel we are debasing ourselves as a nation to this awful man. I promise I don't really spend my days fixated on this stuff but when I took a few moments this morning to think about this visit I realised I have the rage about this! Thank God for Mumsnet for being a venue to let me rant Grin

Did you see the Sky News ‘trailer’ for it, though? That did make me laugh...

It's just like the bit of HHGTTG when the vogon ships come over.

CheeseToastieAndABrew · 02/06/2019 11:19

Is there room for him in the Tower of London? We'll pay any reasonable rent to put him up there. Can we do a two year imprisonment lease

Well, we've Crowdfunded Bojo into a trial.....

MrsElizabethShelby · 02/06/2019 11:22

The royal family are diplomats. This is there modern purpous. I absolutely expect them so smile and be jovial and welcoming.

Trump is a douche but we cannot alienate everyone because we don't like them as Brexit means we will need allies mm ore than ever before.

bluebell34567 · 02/06/2019 11:23

him backing boris affected my opinion of him.
previously it was barrack who said we would be at the end of the trade queue that made me feel the same. i lost my respect to him if i had any.

MrsElizabethShelby · 02/06/2019 11:23

Oh the typos

Justanotherlurker · 02/06/2019 11:23

And there were anti Xi protests.

No one is saying there wasn't a protest, but it was largely ignored and those protesting where tiny in numbers.

The point is that most of the people galled that trump is having a state visit brushed aside all the other visits or didn't even know about them at all, it's highlights that they have no political nuance or understanding and repeating the meme "Orange man bad" for twitter/facebook likes.

bluebell34567 · 02/06/2019 11:24

but of course we have to show courtesy.

Whosorrynow · 02/06/2019 11:30

We can respect the office yet revile the man who occupies it
(Not that trump has the mental dexterity to make such distinctions)

Rainbunny · 02/06/2019 11:32

"Wow, OP....you think routinely putting gay people to death is the same as making some remark about Meghan Markle? Get real."

"In any event, were you shouting about Mugabe when he visited?"

Of course I'm not comparing the killing of people to Trump's personal nastiness, although I do actually believe that he would do far worse if he were not constrained by the fact that the USA has a robust democracy and the rule of law. As for Mugabe - I was a young child at the time. Just because the UK has hosted terrible people in the past does not mean we should continue to do so.

Trump may not be the dictator he wishes to be but he has managed to be pretty damn awful in separating children from their families at the border, there are still thousands of children seperated, many of whom the US government has admitted they don't know how to reunite with their families if they ever do. I happen to think that a government that kidnaps children and keeps them and their families apart in cages is a fucking disgrace.

In some ways he enjoys being hated, he likes to divide the world into 'Trumpers' and 'never Trumpers', the overarching point being that everyone is defined by their relationship to him, it's all about him, he's still the most important person, king of the world, whether you love him or hate him

NameChangeNugget · 02/06/2019 11:32

You’re deluded thinking DT won’t be re-elected next year.

SuePerbly · 02/06/2019 11:39

I agree with you OP.

Other hideous regimes should have been protested more in hindsight, but that is whataboutary.

As a PP said, Trump has personally insulted and made crass sexual comments about members of the Royal Family.

He has also said that NF should be involved with Brexit negotiations and supported BoJo to be next PM - he can stay the fuck out of our internal politics. At least Obama was talking about something the US would have been involved with - the US trade deal.

I object to our Royal Family being put through the indignity of welcoming a man who boasted that he could have shagged Princess Diana. Poor William and Harry having to shake hands with the man, when they probably want to shake his face with their fists.

Powergower · 02/06/2019 14:31

Prince Philip?? Is that a joke. The guy is in the same bracket as trump in terms of his views and opinions of people of colour and women. Two odious old white men... they'd have a field day.

Good on Meghan for giving it all a swerve. I hope Harry does too.

greydayatmosphere · 02/06/2019 14:37

YABU.

Trump is a revolting human being but he is the democratically elected head of state and he is invited in that capacity, not as an endorsement of his personality.

I am also a bit tired of people who virtue signal about state visits for Trump and yet talk about China and its leaders being their great friend and court them (yes Nicola Sturgeon I am talking about you). Trump may be unpleasant but he does not torture and imprison his own people en masse for his own purposes and nor is he an unelected dictator.

AnyFucker · 02/06/2019 14:40

Unfortunately he is the POTUS

And that is that.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/06/2019 15:19

I don’t know - Prince Phillip on a good day maybe - not know for humouring fools is he?

SilverySurfer · 02/06/2019 15:46

I totally agree with Justanotherlurker the leaders listed in her post are far worse. Americans were given a choice between a rock (revolting human being) and a hard place (dodgy, mentally unstable ex First Lady) at the elections and although I would never vote for him in a million years, I think Hilary Clinton would have been a worse POTUS.

I don't understand all the frothing or how his visit impacts on you at all, unless you're going to be sitting opposite him at the State Banquet or serving him his dinner. Don't look at or read the news and it will all be over and he will have gone back. Nothing you do or say will stop him visiting.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/06/2019 15:55

dodgy, mentally unstable ex First Lady

Eh?

HandInGove · 02/06/2019 15:55

I will not get the sounds of those horrendous recordings of the poor tiny crying children separated from their parents at the US border out of my head for a long time. Many never to be reunited. Trump is despicable and family separation like that is straight up child abuse.

longwayoff · 02/06/2019 16:10

Don't often feel sorry for the Royals but bloody hell! Days of Donald and family. Sadie Khan has it right, plenty of archive footage to prove it. Vile man with horrendous supporters.

longwayoff · 02/06/2019 16:12

SCROTUS.
