YANBU.i have no idea either.

ladylush · 20/07/2007 22:05

I sort of know what it is but I don't really get what the big deal is. Also I don't get why you would want to share your personal pics with anyone on the WWB

berolina · 20/07/2007 22:07

YANBU. Can't stand the idea myself, and will certainly not be joining.

sparklesandwine · 20/07/2007 22:07

no idea dp came home muttering something about it but i had a look and don't get it much prefer mn

2spells · 20/07/2007 22:09

i keep getting added by people (they use their rl names so have no idea who they are)

I read somewhere that myspace is usually used by the working class and facebook by the middleclass. I have no idea which category I fall into but it's irrelevant as I have no interest in either of them

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 22:22

what is it?

ladylush · 20/07/2007 22:27

I think it's a chat forum where you can post pics of your mates/family etc but anyone can access it.

Posey · 20/07/2007 22:29

Until I glanced that other thread earlier which prompted me to ask dh "what is Facebook all about?"So had a little look but don't think I'll be getting addicted.

2spells · 20/07/2007 22:31

omg you put your pic. of yourself on it. NEVER WILL I DO THAT

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 20/07/2007 22:32

I know what it IS but I still am not quite sure what it is FOR.

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 22:33

how do they know they are your real pictures (technophobe emoticon)?

Whizzz · 20/07/2007 22:33

well I got an email saying that someone I know had posted a pic of me on Facebook - turns out its me with other people & her....but I don't want me labelled on Facebook.....do I tell her ??????

berolina · 20/07/2007 22:34

I would. I'd be incandescent if someone started putting pictures of me on t'net. Unlikely to happen in my case - can't really think of any of my friends who would use it.

Whizzz · 20/07/2007 22:37

...I know and rather than just putting my first name - its my full name so asume that anyone could just search & find it

MrsRonWeasley · 20/07/2007 22:38

Speaking as someone who's been net-stalked by a journalist which then turned into real life stalking (and just because she wanted me to talk about hiring wedding photographers, that's all ) I would NEVER put a pic on ANYWHERE. It's just far too dangerous.

Something bad will happen, and these sites will fall out of favour

Whizzz · 20/07/2007 22:42

hmm - is it restricted access ?? As I have just googled my RL name + facebook & it hasn't brought up anything.....

ladylush · 20/07/2007 22:45

I was stalked in RL so I really don't fancy it one bit. A friend sent me an email to say she had added me to her list on facebook. It felt a bit silly (I don't know why) to ask her not to put any pics of me on it, but I did ask her not to put any of ds there.

ladylush · 20/07/2007 22:45

You have to sign up for it.

mammamic · 20/07/2007 22:52

Hi. I'm on FB and it's a really good site for keeping in 'real time' touch with people. It started as a college site in US for people to keep in touch and network and then extended to WWW.

you can add whatever you like but it is not public unless you set it up that way. i have loads of pics and details of things we're doing and arrange things with friends and family on there BUT ONLY MY FRIENDS CAN SEE IT. you can set every aspect of who sees what via profile and privacy settings.

It's being compared to MySpace in the media but they're quite different.

I have to be honest - I love it!! It's like MN with more functionality and not targeted to any particular type.

have a look - you may be pleasantly surprised Facebook

And etiquette and good manners would usually mean that your photo and anything about you is not posted without your OK so, YES, i would definitely let the person know that you're not comfortable with your photo being up there.

Hope this explains a bit what it's all about

ladylush · 20/07/2007 22:54

but it's a bit worrying that your privacy is dependent on the person who sets up the profile

mammamic · 20/07/2007 23:01

unfortunately that goes for any 'social' type site. we have little control even on MN if someone wanted to post our personal details....

mammamic · 20/07/2007 23:04

if anyone sets up a profile with your details pretending to be you , you can contact FB and they will investigate and take action dependent on the outcome.

I was stalked for over 4 yrs following an abusive relationship and even moved abroad to stop it. FB is the first site of it's type that i have trusted to put my details on. and you can add as little or much as you want.

WinkyWinkola · 20/07/2007 23:12

Oooh, I love FaceBook. It's a really easy and entertaining way to keep up with lots of friends without having to send loads of emails etc. And I trust it for privacy, security etc. But be warned, it's so addictive!

ladylush · 20/07/2007 23:19

I don't put any personal stuff on mnet, but I know what you mean. Anyone could get a pic of you and post it on the www
