Cute couple with an emotional story or is it icky and weird?
What's your opinion on it when you watch Friends?

Cute couple. I always thought they were a better fit than Monica and Chandler.

Guerlainista · 26/05/2019 20:48

I always thought ‘she’s too young for you, mate’. They looked so wrong together.

Love Tom Selleck and he was a very attractive character, but the relationship was a bit pathetic from his side. She was a twinky from the city Grin.

Maybebaybe · 26/05/2019 20:48

Icky because he was her fathers friend. Though I love Tom Selleck so was quite happy to gloss over that detail. If it was my daughter with a friend of DH I would be 🤢 about it.

Calltheguards · 26/05/2019 20:49

Cute couple. I prefer unconventional couples because I feel like they really have to want to be together since they get so much judgment.

MatchsticksForMyEyesReturns · 26/05/2019 20:51

My best friend from school married a good friend of her dad's. 16 years her senior. They've been together 20 years and married 16. They are a good fit and her dad got his head around it.

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 20:52

Would have been cute, apart from the fact he was a long standing family friend and had known her since a little girl. That makes the age gap very creepy, and he’s quite pathetic how he’s pining after her in later seasons. Move on, mate.

Bollockwort · 26/05/2019 20:55

Completely in agreement with Cwenthryth

Their relationship seemed a lot healthier than the one between Monica and Chandler to me - Monica dominated Chandler too much for my liking, whereas her and Richard were more equal partners.

ApplesOrangesPears · 26/05/2019 20:55

It’s creepy because he was a family friend and had known her as a child. The age gap wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for the other stuff.

Sparklingbrook · 26/05/2019 20:56

Icky

Blueemeraldagain · 26/05/2019 20:57

He was a great character and handsome but the age gap combined with how long they had known each other made their relationship so inappropriate!

ChillaxingInMyKimono · 26/05/2019 20:58

Only made palatable because it was Tom Selleck.

Otherwise just plain icky.

Funnily enough, the one when Monica dated a younger guy - and she found out his age - had her genuinely shuddering with ick. But somehow it's more OK the other way round. Hmm

EmpressJewel · 26/05/2019 21:00

Icky. But only because he was a friend of her Dads and I assume he knew her from when she was young.

HelenaDove · 26/05/2019 21:01

What creeped me out with Richard was the thing with the videotapes.

Cwenthryth · 26/05/2019 21:01

She pee’d in his pool!

Purpleartichoke · 26/05/2019 21:03

For me it comes down to a balance of power. Monica was old enough that she had her own money. Not as much as Richard, but enough that she wouldn’t be beholden to him. So their relationship didn’t bother me.

I did like that they addressed the reality of being at different places in life and that can be an insurmountable challenge.

OwlBeThere · 26/05/2019 21:03

two consenting adults. she was 25, so not even young. nothing ick about it.

IHeartArya · 26/05/2019 21:06

Icky. There’s a couple I know in similar set up but bigger age gap. She’s also a bit older. Her parents are appalled & think he’s betrayed their friendship as he’s known her since she was a baby.

Mind you Tom Selleck - I so would.

Gottalovesummer · 26/05/2019 21:06

Altho I LOVE Chandler, Monica was much better suited to Richard.

It was a much more equal relationship.

Monica simply bossed Chandler around and he complied and went from funniest character to most boring.

KitKat1985 · 26/05/2019 21:07

It was icky. Not so much about the age gap per se, but more because he knew her since she was a child and was a friend of her parents made it weird.

TheRLodger · 26/05/2019 21:07

Icky in the fact it was her dads friend- similar age to her age then and the idea of dating one of my dads friends 🤢

However... they were better suited to each other than her and chandler.

EdWinchester · 26/05/2019 21:08

No. Weird. He's what, 20-30 years her senior? Yuck.

Redcrayons · 26/05/2019 21:08

Him being a friend of her dad's and having known her since she was a child gives it the icky factor.

Mind you, Tom Selleck in Magnum was one of my first crushes so I definitely would.

ChristmasFluff · 26/05/2019 21:09

Really loved the relationship. Can see why people would feel ick, but I didn't.

Quintella · 26/05/2019 21:10

The fact he was her dad's friend was the only ick factor, not the age gap. She should have stuck with Richard, they had far more chemistry. I'd rather 20 good years with Richard than 50 years with whiny Chandler.

Even now Monica and Richard look right together Grin

planesinthesky · 26/05/2019 21:11

It’s fine. She was in her mid-twenties when they met again and started dating. He didn’t even recognise her, so it had obviously been years since he’d last seen her. And as a person she was also unrecognisable from teenage Monica. I can see why her parents wouldn’t like it, but he’s clearly not some predatory groomer.
