Would you be unreasonable to keep one million pounds?

Inspired by another thread where tiny theft is essentially de minimus and not a big deal... how about the opposite... if you found one million pounds in the street that belonged to someone else, would you keep it?

You can assume the following:

There is a 0 per cent chance you would get caught
You would have no problem using and spending the money (just forget about all the money laundering prevention laws here)
The money belongs to someone else
You have no idea who it belongs to or what they would use it for

So it is purely a question of morality not practicality. WWYD?

I came on to write 'hell yes' and then started thinking about the true owner and now I'm not too sure. Stuck. Going to wait for more replies to help me with my moral dilemma.

Langrish · 26/05/2019 20:48

Sheesh. Truth be told, I’m that suspicious I’d probably think someone had planted it there and I’d be filmed/covered in purple dye/posted on YouTube.
Yes, I’d hand it in 🙄

Langrish · 26/05/2019 20:48

(I’ve always been way too sodding honest for my own good 😡)

RainbowWaffles · 26/05/2019 20:50

Sheesh. Truth be told, I’m that suspicious I’d probably think someone had planted it there and I’d be filmed/covered in purple dye/posted on YouTube

In this fictional scenario, you can be 100 per cent sure this isn’t the case. There is no catch, you would never be exposed and there would be no come back.

No, I wouldn’t keep it. A scrap of cactus is de minimis enough that I don’t care / consider it stealing but a million quid I find on the street clearly isn’t mine to keep.

MakeItRain · 26/05/2019 20:50

There's no way I could keep or enjoy it. Shame though!

Abra1de · 26/05/2019 20:50

No.

Liverbird77 · 26/05/2019 20:50

Absolutely not. No way. I would hand it in.

SparklyLeprechaun · 26/05/2019 20:50

If it's purely a question of morality, then yes, I'd keep it, simply based on the assumption that anyone carrying that amount of cash couldn't have got it by honest means.

BentBaastard · 26/05/2019 20:51

Yeah
I would keep it.

Summerorjustmaybe · 26/05/2019 20:51

Keep half??

Soulsista14 · 26/05/2019 20:51

Yes I would 100% keep it

Imsureitsasugaredpoo · 26/05/2019 20:52

I’d have no problem keeping it, you’d be a fool not to IMO.

Rocketpants50 · 26/05/2019 20:52

Nope, am too hysterical and would constantly think it would belong to some drug baron who would eventually find me. Read to many books and woukd constantly wKe at 3am worrying. Am too honest. Will go buy a lottery ticket instead and be ever hopeful.

planesinthesky · 26/05/2019 20:53

If there was zero chance of getting caught? Yeah, I’d 100% keep it.

frazzledasarock · 26/05/2019 20:53

No, I’d feel too guilty.

Thankfully I can afford the basics of life and am not in need, so nope.

However if my circumstances were hard I don’t know.

MotherOfTheNoise · 26/05/2019 20:54

100% keep it. Dubious morals be damned!

Rocketpants50 · 26/05/2019 20:54

Though just a thought if you found and handed in a million to police and never collected by owner would you get it back?

golddustwomen · 26/05/2019 20:56

I would keep it.

AllTheCakes · 26/05/2019 20:56

To the people thinking they would keep the money, where do you draw the line from an insignificant amount to something more substantial?

Having grey areas means everything is subjective, when it should simply be that you should never take what isn’t yours, regardless of value.

snowdrop6 · 26/05/2019 20:58

I’d never live with the worry of it being drugs money and them coming after me.id just leave it be

mimibunz · 26/05/2019 20:58

No, I wouldn’t keep it.

Langrish · 26/05/2019 20:58

Rainbowwaffles

Afraid I’d still hand it in. I marched my 3 year old back to George at Asda with a sparkly thing she’d picked up and made her give it back to the customer service lady (who was brilliant) and walked nearly 2 miles back to a Tesco (which I spent a bloody fortune in over the years) with my then 2 year old son because I’d inadvertently walked out with a packet of pampers hanging off the handle of the pushchair and not paid. The customer service lady there was astonished I’d bothered.

I will never be rich. Wally. I’m an atheist so won’t even get my reward in heaven. I often wish I didn’t have this broom handle up my arse 😁

MingeOnFire · 26/05/2019 20:58

In the scenario in the OP I would absolutely keep it. In real life I would hand it in

EmeraldShamrock · 26/05/2019 21:00

I would be terrified a drug dealer from a organised gang own it, so I would not take it or hand it in.
If I was fully sure, no one would find out a part of me would consider it. Blush
If I won a few million, I would random 1000 euros in some families letterbox, when things were bad financial, when I checked the post box, I use to fantasies about finding an envelope of cash in it. I have weird thoughts Grin
