Would you be unreasonable to keep one million pounds?

Inspired by another thread where tiny theft is essentially de minimus and not a big deal... how about the opposite... if you found one million pounds in the street that belonged to someone else, would you keep it?

You can assume the following:

There is a 0 per cent chance you would get caught
You would have no problem using and spending the money (just forget about all the money laundering prevention laws here)
The money belongs to someone else
You have no idea who it belongs to or what they would use it for

So it is purely a question of morality not practicality. WWYD?

I would hand it in, 100%

I'd be picturing forever the poor person I'd taken it from.

contentedsoul · 26/05/2019 22:24

Slightly off topic..
But is it true that when the Queen dies, the currency has to be changed within a very short period (couple of weeks)
I know of a few people who've stashed away cash to avoid declaring for tax. Considering anything deposited/spent over £1k is subject to checks for money laundering, I bet HM treasurer will be in for a bumper day. All those ill got stashes will quickly become worthless bits of paper

AnnieMay100 · 26/05/2019 22:28

No it wouldn’t be mine I’d feel like I’m spending dirty money that I didn’t earn or deserve so I’d hand it in, a million pound would be amazing though I can dream Grin

TheGrapefulDread · 26/05/2019 22:36

No. i’d Notify the Police.

seesawteddy · 26/05/2019 22:37

If I hand it in the true owner gets it back?

Then I’d 100% hand it in.

Bluerussian · 26/05/2019 22:40

I'd keep it if it was used notes and there was no cctv where I picked it up.

You've got me fantasising now.

seesawteddy · 26/05/2019 22:49

The way I make decisions like this is to think about the likelihood of the true owner getting it back. If it’s unlikely, then it’s up for grabs.

Any amount in a purse- hand it in.

Up to £50 on the street- miniscule odds of true owner getting it back, so it may as well be mine.

Anything over £50 would be worth making enquiries for in my book, so I’d hand it in to the Police.

BelfortGabbz · 26/05/2019 22:49

I'm not sure I trust the police enough to hand it in.

puppy23 · 26/05/2019 23:08

I'd maybe take a couple thousand to fund me going abroad to visit someone I currently can't comfortably afford to but hand the rest in?

I think I'd mainly hand it in out of hope someone would do the same were I ever in the same position

SentientPotato · 26/05/2019 23:10

Yup I'd keep it.

TeaAndChocolateBiscuits · 26/05/2019 23:14

Yep, I'd keep. For many reasons.. Firstly, if someone had misplaced it, they obviously don't need it. Secondly, I would like to think I'd do my bit and donate some to a worthy course, thirdly, I'm sick of living month to month so to have no money worries would be bliss, and lastly, Its a million pound... Who the heck would turn that down?!

Inertia · 26/05/2019 23:23

I'd hand it in to the police , and insist on getting a receipt.

(I've handed in money found on the street to the police).

JenMumma · 26/05/2019 23:39

I Wouldn't hear anyone calling me a thief (cactus or otherwise) from my little yacht so erm, yeah 🤷🏼‍♀️👋 💰 💰 xx

DogHairEverywhere · 27/05/2019 00:12

I'd hand it in. I wouldn't enjoy spending it, knowing it wasn't mine. But it does beg the question in my mind of where the tipping point is, because if i found a pound, I'd keep it. If i found a fiver, on the street with no way of knowing whose it was, I'd probably keep it, but if i found it in tesco, I'd hand it in. If i found £100 on the street, I'd hand it in to police. Not sure what I'd do if i found a £20. There's clearly a tipping point in my mind, I don't think I'd enjoy keeping the £20, but not sure i could be bothered to go to the police station to hand it in.

MQv2 · 27/05/2019 00:26

If, due to the hypothetical scenario, I know for a fact thay I am genuinely guaranteed to get away with it and gave no consequences then I'd take it in a heartbeat

MQv2 · 27/05/2019 00:27

I'd give zero to charity or worthy causes fwiw

MissLadyM · 27/05/2019 00:29

0% of getting caught? Of course I'd keep it! So would everyone!

MissLadyM · 27/05/2019 00:35

And if the Queen dies, her money will be in circulation for a few years. They'll introduce the new currency gradually.

RoseMartha · 27/05/2019 00:39

I would not keep this. It is dishonest and not mine to keep or spend.

StoppinBy · 27/05/2019 00:44

I would hand it in to the police and hope that the statutory time passed with no one claiming it so I could claim it myself.

I can't remember the amount of time but I think it is 3 months, the original owner has that time to reclaim it and after that it becomes finders/keepers (Aus).

starsparkle08 · 27/05/2019 00:56

I would keep it definitely

1forAll74 · 27/05/2019 01:02

I would definitely keep it, and hand some of it around,to some very deserving people.who are in dire need of some money help.

HagridsBigToe · 27/05/2019 01:08

In real life, no. But I know nobody would go to the police saying they lost a million pounds in cash (no way they got that by honest means!) so it would be lost anyway.

In your fictional scenario, yes.

HagridsBigToe · 27/05/2019 01:09

And I completely forgot that found money can be returned after x amount of time... so yeah, hand it in, nobody would claim that amount of cash and you get it anyway. That's my RL answer!

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 27/05/2019 06:14

Umm YES I'd keep it. Unless my paranoia kicked in and I , like a pp said, started to wonder if it was a set up.
