To tell him to fook off

My friend on facebook put a photo of a wrong word used in a sentence, she's a bit obsessed with grammar. I replied and the conversation went along these lines.

Me: I'm not normally a knob about these things but even I think that's bad
Friend of friend: It's not being a knob pointing out when someone can't spell or use grammar correctly.
Me: It is been a knob as not everyone can spell or use grammar right.
Friend of friend: It's 'being' not been
Me: oh do fuck off!

I think I was perfectly reasonable as it's facebook not an exam. I don't go round telling people to fuck off normally but this really annoyed me.
My brother said it was banter my mum is quite cross with me.

So you commented on your friends' post pointing out how bad a grammatical error is, and then told one of their friends to fuck off for doing the same to you.

YABU. Are you all 12?

Sirzy · 20/05/2019 08:37

All sounds ridiculous and childish.

But if your going to comment on a post about spelling and grammar then getting things right yourself would make sense.

Dvg · 20/05/2019 08:39

I think She is wrong to judge everyone for it as you are right not everyone can spell or use grammar plus it really doesn't matter if someone makes those mistakes as it doesn't affect her at all although i do have a giggle if i see blatantly wrong spellings/grammar

Dvg · 20/05/2019 08:40

BUT also i would expect you to know its being not been and i do find it annoying when messaging someone and they cant even get a sentence correct, it makes it quite hard for me to understand and i have to think about it.

Pinkyyy · 20/05/2019 08:42

If you're going to use Facebook, I certainly wouldn't begin picking on people's spelling and grammar. I hope you've a lot of spare time on your hands.

BelulahBlanca · 20/05/2019 08:43

But @DVG you’re missing an apostrophe and a capitals. It doesn’t matter!

CheddarandCrackers · 20/05/2019 08:43

True. Delicious irony.

PregnantSea · 20/05/2019 08:50

You and friend are acting like children

Dvg · 20/05/2019 09:00

@BelulahBlanca You obviously missed the point of my post, thats the point, no one has to be good at spelling or grammar but to at least know what you are talking about is helpful whether on facebook or otherwise.

I hardly ever use apostrophes or full stops unless it is needed as its annoying having to go to a separate page on my phones keypad to do it and also feel that i really wouldn't care if someone else didn't either especially on facebook.

NOW i never went to school from the age of 11 so i know that not everyone knows it because even i don't but i have seen some funny ones.

Branleuse · 20/05/2019 09:02

Tell her that grammar pedants are fewer interesting

SignedUpJust4This · 20/05/2019 09:14

Karma's a bitch.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 20/05/2019 09:38

I wouldn't mind if someone gave constructive criticism and helped correct errors on spelling, grammar etc in a nice way however it's always done in a mean spirited, judgy and condescending manner. That smug im better than you attitude, it's ugly impo. Plenty of folk may not have had much schooling or may have learning disabilities such as dyslexia so have little confidence as it is with writing. Comments like those make it a thousand times worse for them. There is no need to be an arse about and make fun of people if you can still get the gist of what they are trying to convey. More so if it is on an informal post on a social media platform where lets be honest it doesn't really matter.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 20/05/2019 09:40

I'd have said alot worse than fook off to them, YANBU!

BippetyBoppityBooYouWhore · 20/05/2019 10:03

It's fuck, not fook.

Bezalelle · 20/05/2019 10:09

Yeah, the most annoying thing about this is "fook". That's not a word.

Cuppa12345 · 20/05/2019 10:10

I don't get it. Your friend criticised someone, you called her knob and then she corrected your grammar and you told her to fuck off?

Just ignore her.

redhotchill · 20/05/2019 10:30

They did to you what you did to your friend. But they deserve a fuck off?

You can't correct someone's spelling or grammar then get it wrong yourself without expecting to be corrected

Honestly people that comment on spelling on things like Facebook and on here make me eye roll.

In a work situation, fine to comment.
On a social media site or forum, who cares really?

Antigon · 20/05/2019 10:44

The morale of the storey is never comment on any one elses' spelling and grammar, hence why I never do this.

Delamalama · 20/05/2019 11:22

I wasn't commenting on anyone's grammar or spelling i was pointing out to my friend that I don't normally care about these things, but what my friend had posted was pretty bad. It was a very large corporation that had used the word 'are' instead of 'our'

OK, I'm a knob Grin

You're contradicting yourself. You're saying you didn't comment on the S&G, but then saying you did.

Everyone should care because it shows a lack of standards, and laziness will creep in everywhere. It shows a lack of respect for the person you are writing to, too.

How long will it be before concessions are made in the workplace? Oh it doesn't matter, it's just a word doc What then if it ends up outside of your company by accident?

And then in school? Oh, it doesn't matter, little Johnny has issues, let's not bother teaching him correctly, let him get on with it, bad SPAG don't matter in the workplace anyway

See the erosion of standards?

Morgan12 · 20/05/2019 11:53

Why would you write been instead of being anyway?

Sparklfairy · 20/05/2019 11:55

Laughing at all the posters commenting here when the grammar and spelling on their posts is less than perfect!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 20/05/2019 11:56

YABU to say “fook”
