AIBU to want a full cup when I order a black coffee?

I'm not adding milk, so I'd like a full cup of coffee please not half a cup.

Twice just this week (different coffee shops) I've had to ask them to top it up. Admittedly they did it with no quibbling, but I hate having to ask all the time.
I specifically ask for black coffee so I'm not being unclear am I?

No yanbu! This annoys me too. I have black tea, and in some places when served in a tea cup you end up with such a tiny amount! The only place I have been to that actually fills the cup to the brim is Starbucks at our cinema.

babysharkah · 17/05/2019 13:17

Ask for a black Americano. Sounds like you're getting espresso.

Fatbutt · 17/05/2019 13:19

All you have to do is state you want a black coffee without room for milk (thats what the gap is for, some people prefer to do it themselves/use their own milk) Or ask them to top it up!

Starbucks will usually ask if you want room for milk but nowhere else I have been to asks - I just say to them when I order that I'm not having milk and they top it all the way up!

5foot5 · 17/05/2019 13:22

Which is the most expensive substance - the coffee or the milk?

If it is the coffee then I could see that by expecting more of it for the same price they might be reluctant to oblige.

Nooo, I have black Americano and hate when they top it up. You have your espresso shots in there already, so they are just watering it down.

Agree if it's filter coffee though!

MidsomerBurgers · 17/05/2019 13:26

I do ask for an Americano and its definitely not an Espresso I'm getting. Well, as in I know an Americano it a 'watery' Espresso Smile

Of course you should get a full cup!

I think the problem is lots of people order an Americano and then want to put milk in so that’s why you end up with not a full cup as they are leaving space for milk

MidsomerBurgers · 17/05/2019 13:27

Yes, also had the same problem with tea which I also drink black.

Pink, how much milk are people putting in? It's literally half a cup of coffee!

ScreamScreamIceCream · 17/05/2019 13:29

I get that all the time.

I just ask for more water.

If I want an espresso I will get one.

Chowmum · 17/05/2019 13:32

I get this all the time at work. Literally 1/3 cup is missing, and I can't complain because someone's making me a drink, but seriously, if you're going to make me a drink with 2/3 of the water, at least use 2/3 of the blooming coffee - sometimes it's like paint stripper!!

bellabasset · 17/05/2019 13:34

Are you my sister? Her complaint is that everywhere she goes she is given topped up espresso and not a proper filter coffee. As the price of coffee is rapidly becoming around £3 she has a point.

TwizzleFinger · 17/05/2019 13:52

I agree with PinkHeartLovesCake

An Americano is a black coffee. If you go to any other country apart from England you will just get a black coffee.

I've been in the UK and asked for one and the server asked me if I wanted milk in it. I repeated I would like an Americano please and she (was Spanish) said she was sorry she had to ask.

It's because people don't know what they are ordering.

Enko · 17/05/2019 13:55

I think your problem is you ask fro Americano not Black Coffee. An Americano usually i not a full cup (I know it varies some places) The reason why so many find it different in Starbucks is because Starbucks actually HAS Filter coffee (aka black coffee)

I would ask for black coffee with no room for milk

Personally I dislike Americano but love filter coffee but I feel your pain re black tea.

NotWithTheProgramme · 17/05/2019 14:06

I get annoyed when I order a latte that’s all foam. You pick up the takeaway cup and it’s just like lifting a cloud. So irritating when you have to plough through three inches of foam to get to actual drinkable liquid!

Have since asked that what I actually want is a wet latte, with a smaller ratio of foof and bigger percentage of milk/coffee... I now get what I fancy, but sound like a complete prick asking for a skinny, decaf, wet latte to go 🙄

RezCowgirl · 17/05/2019 14:45

Can't you just tell them you'd like it filled to the top when you order?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/05/2019 14:48

You could ask for a flat white NotWithTheProgramme. That's approximately the same volume of milk as a latte but no foam.

I don't think an Americano is supposed to be full to the brim, that would be the wrong proportion of water to coffee, so if that's what you like then you probably need to say so when you order. Having said that, there is one barista in my usual cafe who doesn't put anywhere near enough water in so that the cup is barely three quarters full.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 17/05/2019 14:50

I have the same when I ask for a black tea. The mark up on tea in these shops has got to be massive so I'm buggered if I'm not going to get a full cup!

PJMasksAreOnTheirWay · 17/05/2019 14:55

Anyone is unreasonable to order a tea in Starbucks, it’s like dishwater.

TheFastandCurious · 17/05/2019 14:57

They have to leave a one inch gap at the top (I know this is true for Costa anyway) as per head office for safety reasons. They are not allowed to top up when asked. If it’s a third missing then by all means complain.

AudacityOfHope · 17/05/2019 15:08

I ask them to add 'a shot of cold water in the top' which is wanky millennial-speak enough t get some cold water chucked in.

Otherwise it's about 40 minutes before I can drink it.

What?
An Americano is a black coffee.

An Americano is a espresso topped up with water.
A Black coffee should be filtered through the coffee not topped up.
The taste is different.

Stillinbedat10am · 17/05/2019 15:30

I also suffer this with black tea. Tea served in teapots is my biggest frustration as all my friends who take milk get two cups in a pot whilst I only get one and a half because I fill the cup on the first pour!
