To ask if anyone has an endoscopy through the nose ?

I’m in such a state as I need to have an endoscopy. I’ve been reading that it is possible to have had done via the nose rather than the mouth. Anyone had it done this way and if so was it ok. My anxiety is so high.

You can request an endoscopy with propofol sedation. Propofol is part of the general anaesthetic cocktail and clean knocks you out. I had one done last Friday with it. Speak to your consultants secretary or GP to put the request in.

Somethingsosimple · 10/05/2019 09:51

Thanks Simply. I don’t why but I’m terrified of sedation too, I have read that having it done via nose you are less likely to gag. I’m also retried about what they might find

Sedation is the way to go. I was convinced it wouldn't work until I woke up in recovery.

Magpiefeather · 10/05/2019 09:59

It feels very strange going through the nose, you have to surpress the urge to sneeze! But I had it years ago and it wasn’t too bad

Moondancer73 · 10/05/2019 10:04

I had one via the throat while I was awake and you most definitely do gag. In reality once it's down it's not too bad but if you are awake I guess either way when it passes your throat maybe you'd gag anyway?
If sedation is an option maybe it's a good idea. Good luck whichever way you go.

SimplySteveRedux · 10/05/2019 10:16

you'd gag anyway?

Yes. This is why propofol is a good idea as you're unconscious throughout the procedure.

PoptartPoptart · 10/05/2019 11:05

I had an endoscopy through my nose. It wasn’t pleasant and it felt quite uncomfortable, but it didn’t hurt.

HJWT · 10/05/2019 11:07

@Somethingsosimple what are they looking for? My DH couldn't do it, he tried twice and pulled the camera out himself when the doctor wouldn't 🤢 in the end he had an X-ray with swallowing a special liquid x

MagicKingdomDizzy · 10/05/2019 11:33

I would ask for sedation. If you have to be conscious and it's a choice between going through the nose or going through the mouth (assuming they are looking at your oesophagus or stomach), I would choose mouth.

Pebbles16 · 10/05/2019 11:35

I've had multiple endoscopies and had one through my nose once - it was horrible and had a nurse clamped around my shoulders to stop me jumping about. I would go for mouth out of preference and take the sedation.

alldaywatchingdragrace · 10/05/2019 11:39

Ask for sedation but make sure they actually give it enough time to work. Not to terrify you but I had an endoscopy through the mouth, I was supposed to be sedated but they rushed it and I was completely awake and it was horrible. From everyone I've spoken to who was properly sedated, said they didn't remember a thing.

PeoplesFrontOfJudith · 10/05/2019 11:47

I was in a state too. Just want to reassure you that you will get through it. I was convinced I’d panic too much and they’d have to redo but it was fine. I had sedation, you’re awake and compliant but you don’t remember anything. I was aware of the last bit when they took it out though. Very glad to have had the sedation and got it over and done with. Go for an appointment at the start of the day if possible, less time to stress and you don’t have to worry about fasting so much!

EKGEMS · 10/05/2019 12:24

You can be intubated through the nasal passage and probably have the EGD camera through the other nostril but unless there is a physical reason they'll go via your mouth. You'll be given an anesthetic such as versed and diprivan which makes you unconscious in under a minute and wears off just as quickly. Worst part of an EGD is getting an IV

rosie39forever · 10/05/2019 13:10

For me scope through the mouth is much better than the nose, also no sedation just the throat spray I found easier as no hanging around after and they can tell you your results there and then. It's such a quick procedure a couple of minutes, you do gag as the scope passes your larynx but if you relax and concentrate on your breathing you don't gag again. Take the sedation if you need to, you will be awake but probably won't remember much. Many hospitals won't knock you out because studies have shown that complications greatly increase with the use of general anaesthetic with this procedure.

NoSauce · 10/05/2019 13:13

I’ve had quite a few endoscopies. One without sedation and the others with. I really wouldn’t fancy having it done via my nose. The sedation is my preferred option, over before you known it.

gamerchick · 10/05/2019 13:17

I had one up the nose without sedation, it's a lot more comfortable imo. Nobody had to hold me down. Yes you gag a bit when it goes down and comes back up but that's it. I found holding my breath loads made it more tolerable.

It's not in for long, I'd rather not have sedation so I can leave straight away when it's over.

theWarOnPeace · 10/05/2019 13:20

I’m going to go against the grain and say mine was absolutely fine, barely felt it! I’ve had one with local and one with nothing, and I’d have it without again. Just feels like a weird tickle, once the tip has passed along I no longer felt anything. I was shitting myself though, I understand why you’re scared and I was too. You can get so worked up over medical stuff that it takes on a life of its own. When they were coming towards me to start doing it I completely freaked out, since having had it done I wouldn’t even really think about having it again. Just a slight annoyance, honestly.

SignedUpJust4This · 10/05/2019 13:20

I quite liked it. But I am a bit weird like that.

Chartreuser · 10/05/2019 13:21

I am having one on Friday and am terrified, but I couldn't cope if they went through the nose. I had sinus surgery last year and can't even let the ent get the camera as far as my sinuses so I hope upon hope they'll give me tons of sedation and go through the mouth. The info from my hospital says they use a mouthguard and go though mouth.

When is yours?

NoSauce · 10/05/2019 13:22

SignedUpJust4This me too!

jcq17 · 10/05/2019 13:23

They are two different things. A nasoendoscopy can only see certain things as it will then make you gag. It's mainly used to look at the nose and tongue base.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/05/2019 13:24

Mine was fine too. It felt odd, but not particularly uncomfortable. I just wish they'd repositioned the screen a bit, so I could see more!

I didn't want any sedation, that would have made things too complicated.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 10/05/2019 13:26

Yes it was fine.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/05/2019 13:26

I have just had a colonoscopy under propofol sedation - it is honestly a really stress free and simple way to have these things done - there really is nothing to worry about.

Chartreuser · 10/05/2019 14:10

Hmm have just had a text from the hospital reminding me to pick up medication, AFAIK I just have to be nil by mouth for endoscopy not take the shitting liquid of Doom???

Anyone else had to do bowel prep for just endoscopy?
