WIBU to tip his lunch over his head?

A guy who works in the same office as me has just warmed up a sodding fish pie in the communal microwave and is now sitting at his desk eating it. So he's stunk out not only the kitchen but the office as well, with smoked fish and cheese. It smells like feet, and not clean ones either. I feel queasy Envy not envy

Would I be entirely justified in tipping it over his head, or maybe out of the window so I don't have to smell it any more? Does anyone seriously think it's ok to eat hot stinky food in an office?

That would be assault wouldn’t it?
Do you need your job or have you long harboured a desire to be incarcerated in Holloway?

maddy68 · 07/05/2019 14:58

Ooh I love fish pie. I'm sure that some of your lunches might smell, or your perfume , or your laugh might go through him all part of working together

Sexnotgender · 07/05/2019 14:59

YANBU.

Anyone who microwaves fish in a communal space deserves everything they get.

CurtainsOpen · 07/05/2019 15:00

Absolute end of the world. I'd be calling 101 mate!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 07/05/2019 15:02

Wow what is it on here lately with blokes at work. The done thing is to lock him in a room with clinical waste apparently Grin

Antigon · 07/05/2019 15:02

I have a colleague who microwaves parmesan. PARMESAN.

The smell is so intensely bad that you would welcome the fish pie pong.

Babdoc · 07/05/2019 15:04

This makes me cringe and recall the time I was on a 24 hour shift in ITU as a young doc. I heated up a fish dinner in the ITU kitchen microwave, not realising that it vented via a duct into the Coronary Care Unit next door. Was happily munching it up when the CCU sister burst through in a rage about the vile pong inflicted on her staff and patients...!

Tearsofgravy · 07/05/2019 15:05

I used to sit next to someone in an open plan office who did this every day. He would empty a tin of fish into some pre-made rice/veg and microwave it. EVERY DAY!!! There were a lot of people in that office and I would hear conversations several desks away saying "oh do you smell fish again" and generally complaining of how there is a regular fish smell in the office.

GraceMarks · 07/05/2019 15:09

Google so out of the window would be better, then? But I don't have any previous so I don't think I'd be Holloway-bound for a first offence of a relatively minor assault...

maddy68 if I do have anything for lunch that might smell, I eat it in the area provided, not at my desk. I don't wear perfume. I also tend not to sit there cackling instead of getting on with my work.

Curtains I probably should have put "lighthearted" in my OP, but I would have thought that could be deduced?

sweeney we don't have any clinical waste here, do you think the plant room would do? There are electrical hazards in there, if not biohazards.

@Grace sounds perfect

EL8888 · 07/05/2019 15:14

Yuck! Who does that in a work microwave. I love fish pie but that’s not work lunch appropriate

Oh and Holloway shut a while ago so that wouldn't be an option!

CCquavers · 07/05/2019 15:18

I remember when I was an office manager and one of the accounts payable had re heated (for lots of people to taste) his mums curry. It smelt delicious but it stank the office out and people complained to me. I would have let it go but we'd had a briefing that morning to say VIP were coming to us and to clean up and be respectful blah de blah. Anyway he accuses me of insulting his Mother and after I laughed at him he threatened to take it to HR as I was being racist...

CynthiaRothrock · 07/05/2019 15:20

We have a group of people that do this, they all bring a dish in each twice a week and share it out between them. Lovely idea for them.but not for the rest of us. 6 of them quieng up for the microwave with large tubs of very smelly food. Then spread themselves out over every available surface. No room for any one else to prep, the microwave is left filthy and stinking not that anyone else has time to use it (or would.want to because of the lingering smell) and no room to sit and eat whilst they have their banquet.
I have been tempted to remove the fuse from the micro on certain days....

GraceMarks · 07/05/2019 15:22

quavers oh god... I suppose at least it isn't Friday and therefore this guy can't claim he has to eat fish for religious reasons.

I won't say anything, obviously. I'll just sit here and direct entirely disproportionate levels of silent hatred towards him for the rest of the day.

Have you got windows that open? if so I'd open a few on full.
I think its ignorant to eat that in an open plan office, I'd ask the manager to ask him to just eat in the designated area because its horrible.

DerelictWreck · 07/05/2019 15:27

YANBU.

I have a colleague who does this. He heated up Haggis last week as well.

Seriously who thinks that's a good idea.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 07/05/2019 15:29

People in my office heat up all kinds of food. No-one gives a shit.

bamboofibre · 07/05/2019 15:35

BOAK.

BettyDuMonde · 07/05/2019 15:45

Open a window and turn a fan on (if possible).

Then ask whoever is capable of making such decisions to impose a ‘no smelly food at desks’ rule for everyone moving forward.

Causing hot fish burns to a colleague is probably gross misconduct Grin

GabrielleNelson · 07/05/2019 15:51

I love fish pie but I wouldn't eat it at my desk. The smell of smoked fish lingers for a long time.

I've mentioned before, I think, the colleague who heated up cabbage soup in the converted cupboard we were allocated to boil a kettle and heat stuff up in the microwave. There was no vent or aircon. She then carried it back down the corridor to her office through two sets of fire doors, closing with a nice tight seal, so the smell lingered on, having nowhere to escape to, in all four areas. It was winter so not ideal for her colleagues in the office to have to consider opening a window.

ChoccieEClaire · 07/05/2019 15:54

Things like this really make me cross! I sit next to a woman at work, every day, TWICE a day she sits and eats McCoy's cheese and onion crisps Angry the rage I feel is building! I open the window, she then shuts it. I tell her they smell, she says it's the bins!!

MrsD333 · 07/05/2019 16:03

This sort of shit does my head in! Grown adults moaning about the smell of fish. It’s absolutely pathetic

FamilyOfAliens · 07/05/2019 16:07

Eating your lunchtime sandwich at your desk is one thing. Eating a hot, pungent lunch at your desk in a communal work space is selfish in the extreme.
