For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

I’m here for the parkrun fun on Saturday!

MissFitton · 25/05/2019 06:30

Park run day! Are you going today @SlowStarters? Hoping all the thread runners have a good run. Star

SlowStarters · 25/05/2019 06:43

Morning all!

Well it's very wet, chilly, and I'm severely sleep deprived after adopting a very large and velcro-like rescue puppy this week.

But I'm still going to Parkrun! DH and pup are going to come and cheer me on.

Since last Saturday I've only managed a 3k on Wednesday that felt as long as a marathon so I plan on a very slow and steady plod around the course today. Can't wait to get my 3rd done!

How is everyone else would you like to take my puppy and who else is doing Parkrun this morning?? :)

Well done @SlowStarters. We're not at home today otherwise I'd join you at Parkrun too - for me though, I do it to feel better in myself, not for the PB as I'm much slower now than when I first started doing Parkrun but I feel a sense of achievement in completing it rather than looking at my time.

Anyway, well done and enjoy!

MissFitton · 25/05/2019 07:56

Picture of the puppy please!
If it helps at all the only time I run is at park run so don't worry about onit getting out once this week. Just enjoy yourself! and have a break from the puppy Grin

SlowStarters · 25/05/2019 08:07

Happy sleepy pup Grin

Happy parkrun day people. I am only doing parkrun at moment too...but my weekly outing keeps me on track, gets me moving and gives me some structure. It has been a great barometer of my general health, fitness and wellbeing over the years.

swampytiggaa · 25/05/2019 08:33

I’m doing parkrun this morning with my 2 best running buddies followed by a fry up and brandy to celebrate ones birthday 🎂

SlowStarters · 25/05/2019 12:08

36:05! The sun suddenly appeared and it was HOT!! So I'm really pleased just to have made it round Grin

MissFitton · 25/05/2019 12:15

Well done @SlowStarters! It was hot here too.

Did you ever hear from your 'friend'?

rwalker · 25/05/2019 12:21

2 victories 1) 5k run 2) having self restrain and dignity not to twat her

SquirrelShit · 25/05/2019 12:22

Well done (again) OP!

Have you heard from your "friend" lately?

SlowStarters · 25/05/2019 12:25

@MissFitton thank you!

Nope. Nothing after I said I couldn't meet for coffee because of my first Parkrun - I never heard back - really unlike her, so I've just left it.

It wasn't just the original comment that was upsetting, it sort of made it clear she can't genuinely care when she didn't wish me luck or ask how it went or anything - she would have known it was a big deal for me.

I'm really hoping I'll make some more friends soon, life is a little lonely with one less local friend!

Well done for going. That’s all that counts! 🌷

It’s hot here now too, I need to get out and make the most of it as it’s supposedly crap for the rest of half term 🙄

What breed is SlowStarterPup and how old? He looks part donkey in that photo! He’s clingy because he loves his new mummy and daddy 😍.

IncrediblySadToo · 25/05/2019 13:01

Did you consider doing what I suggested and arrange an MN local meet up? You can name change if you want to and do can others. It really is a nice way to meet people. But arrange something you’ll enjoy so you meet like minded MNers. Dog walk & coffee or knit & natter. Personally I think it’s easier if there’s a ‘reason’ to meet up rather than just ‘meeting for coffee’ as it gives you something in common to talk about.

I’d love to meet you for coffee though, but you’re MILES away 😕

swampytiggaa · 25/05/2019 14:16

It was so hot this morning! Pootled around in @slowstarters time (38 minutes) then had a full English breakfast with a double brandy 😂😂😂 then I wonder why my weight keeps going up 😂😂😂

Parkrunslowcoach · 25/05/2019 16:28

I've name changed for this post as I agree @IncrediblySadToo and would happily meet up @SlowStarters. I'm in the West Midlands so if you do want to arrange a meet up, PM me (I do the Brueton Parkrun in Solihull but can travel - it's a good one though if you fancy it as it's relatively flat albeit with a short hill at the start / end).

SomersetS · 25/05/2019 18:31

No Parkrun for me today but hope to do another soon. Have managed two mid-week hogs though. One alone. One with my new jogging friends.
@SlowStarters is there a ThisMumRuns or similar type club in your area? I've met some lovely peeps. Take a look in leisure centre, local paper or library? Or even put up an advert yourself 😱?

MotherOfTheNoise · 25/05/2019 19:22

@SlowStarters I haven't run in YEARS but you've just made me start the C25K! Also in the West Midlands, so when I can actually run it I am definitely up for a run/plod/cake with you!

swampytiggaa · 29/05/2019 09:19

Last night I helped out at our groups new c25k group 🙂 a group of ladies mostly middle aged tbh. Nervous and quiet at the start laughing and confident at the end 💕

I went because I’d bullied a former colleague into joining 😂😂😂 not so much for the running but for the social life it will open up for her 💕

I ended up running with the lady at the back to keep her company and encourage her but it was lovely to see my friend chatting and laughing away with total strangers 🙂 she was like a different person by the end!

swampytiggaa · 01/06/2019 11:40

Who did parkrun this morning then? It was too hot to make an effort and my 2 running buddies were hungover 🤢 so it was a steady one this morning!

VisiblyOver25 · 01/06/2019 13:35

I've been planning to start c25k, with the goal of doing my local park run, but am awaiting the results of a bone density scan, which I'll get on Monday. The surgery rang me to make the appt so I'm very nervous.

IncrediblySadToo · 02/06/2019 09:15

SlowStarters. Did you go yesterday? It was a lovely morning here. Sadly I’m still ‘off my feet’ with my dodgy knee so I’m still living vicariously 🤣

SlowStarters · 03/06/2019 14:03

Hello all! I'm so sorry for the late update; been crazy busy friggin exhausted from the new addition.

I didn't make it to Parkrun last Saturday, I had a flare up of an undercurrent medical thing (I won't bore you) and I didn't want to push it. BUT I'll be going this Saturday and...I'm taking part in my first proper RACE thing!

I have a number to pin on my T shirt and everything! I can't believe I entered - it's a fun 5K so I know the distance will be fine, and I wanted another challenge to look forward to. You're all so inspirational :)

How is everyone doing? And how are the newbies to C25K getting on?!

OP posts:
swampytiggaa · 03/06/2019 15:01

Oh well done! How exciting your first race!

I’m currently helping two separate groups of people through c25k 🙂 it’s lovely 💕 and I’m RD at parkrun on Saturday 🙂 well actually I’m teaching someone else to be RD which is also lovely 💕

I have a 10k race in July where I am aiming for last place again 😁 with a group of newbies 😁
