For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

Ahhhhh morning everyone!

Loving the inspiration and @swampytiggaa please let me join your club at least in spirit Grin

Eeee I'm ready for my second Parkrun; leaving in 10 mins. I only managed 2.5k on Thurs this week so a 5k is much needed!

We need Parkrun pics this morning Grin

@slowstarters wear a purple top and you are in! We not only support each other we adopt people who aren’t in our group 😁 we are the best running group ever!

I need to get out of bed or I will be late 🙂 good luck! And don’t worry about a pb just enjoy yourself 💕

Urbanvoltaire · 18/05/2019 08:36

You've caught the PR bug! Well done and enjoy, hope you run like the wind this morning.

redcarbluecar · 18/05/2019 08:43

Hope you enjoy it OP! I did a Parkrun last week and was as slow as anything but still felt a sense of achievement, and it has to be a good thing. Enjoyed this thread.

SlowStarters · 18/05/2019 09:52

I'M DYING!

But finished! Really pushed the second lap, by the finish I thought I was going to either pass out or vomit Grin

LOVED IT! And it's raining. I feel hardcore!

How's everyone else??

Brilliant! You total STAR!

Louise7777 · 18/05/2019 09:57

Hey op similar situation here. I used to be very overweight and lost most of it. I took up running and I'm so slow. I came last in a running race. I probably run the same sort of pace as you from the sounds of your time. I've been running for 4 years now and never really improved however I don't run for times I run as it's great for my mental health, it gets me our the house and is an easy way of exercising. Your friend was out of order, she could be jelous of your achievements? Don't let her words have an impact on your fantastic achievement. Tell her you were hurt but also does she run? It does sound like jealously that you are doing something so productive. Please take no notice

Gatekeeper · 18/05/2019 10:03

Slowstarters..are you in N.E?

SomersetS · 18/05/2019 10:47

I did it. Ours has "altitude" and the hill is a killer but I did it & I would actually like to do it again in a few weeks. Phew! (We wear purple tops too)!
@SlowStarters you deserve a medal for all the people you've motivated.
Well done All!

SlowStarters · 18/05/2019 11:25

Results are in - 00:34:55 Grin

I can't believe I'm almost 5 minutes faster than my first 5k in my original post; it's an amazing feeling. I honestly would have given up without you all encouraging me.

I may have come in 500th+ place out of 550ish but I don't care! I did it!

I'm having cake and gin tonight to celebrate my PB.

@Gatekeeper I'm in the Midlands :)

@SomersetS ours has a hill bit too, right at the start, it's evil! Two laps so if it doesn't see you off at the start, it gets you second time round...

SomersetS · 18/05/2019 11:34

@SlowStarters ours is all downhill for the second half! That's the fab bit.

Isadora2007 · 18/05/2019 11:34

Amazing! You’re inspirational.
I wonder if you asked your “friend” if she wanted to come out with you on your next run she would do it? You could even suggest she walks it and that would prove to you and her that she is full of shit and probably far too insecure about her own abilities to do it.
You keep on as you’re doing. 🌟

changingnam · 18/05/2019 11:47

Jogging 5k is an amazing achievement. I did a 5k fun run thinking how hard can it be? I managed about 300m running and had to walk most of the rest of it!

MissFitton · 18/05/2019 13:36

Wow @SlowStarters that is amazing! Well done.
I ran this morning too and did think about all the MNers running which you've inspired. You should be proud of yourself! Star

GabrielleNelson · 18/05/2019 14:56

Great work, SlowStarters! I thought of you this morning as I slogged round our parkrun. I got a new PB but was still over a minute slower than you! Keep up the good work.

yourestandingonmyneck · 18/05/2019 15:05

You know the answer to this. Regardless of how long it had taken you, her response was out of order.

She's a cow, and the comment says more about her than about you. Ignore her, and well done!!!

swampytiggaa · 18/05/2019 16:49

Absolutely amazing @slowstarters!

I think we need a virtual club for us plodders so we can celebrate each other’s achievements as we go from strength to strength 💕

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 18/05/2019 17:17

Well done @SlowStarters, that's fantastic! I did ours this morning also as I was inspired by you so you're having a massive impact on others as well as yourself! Thank you!

MadamMMA · 18/05/2019 17:19

How mean if your friend, well done you! It isn’t the speed that counts really anyway it’s the distance

HellonHeels · 19/05/2019 22:23

Just popped in to check your parkrun result @SlowStarters - WELL DONE!!! Delighted to see you feeling good Flowers

Thanks to you i did C25K week 2 run 1 today. You are an inspiration - thank you X

Raindrops81 · 20/05/2019 19:17

@SlowStarters have you heard anything from your friend since you told her you were doing the first park run?

IncrediblySadToo · 22/05/2019 19:19

Slowstarters. I’m very impressed you went last Saturday in the rain. You are hardcore!!
