Man wouldn't untrap me from his umbrella!

I was doing some shopping yesterday and somehow managed to get my shirt sleeve caught up between the spoke and material of an elderly man's umbrella.

The umbrella was one of these huge ones and was in his shopping trolley, sticking out,the wrong way up/down. Anyway,we were both stationary when the incident occurred, but when he started moving,he took me with him, with force.

I think that I was unsure of what to do at first,so I went along with him for a bit, trying to get out, but I couldn't. So I said excuse me at least five times, before he turned around.

I explained the situation and then he looked and said that I had torn his umbrella (there was a kind of stretchy hole of material between the umbrella-structure and the material).

I denied it,but apologised, and then he did a massive kind of put-out-but-confined type noise and then just carried on,at the same pace, which was fast/medium, talking me with him basically!

Anyway,I ended up having to rip my shirt to get free! I wasn't going in his direction and I had shopping,so I was sweating!!

Was he being unreasonable? Should he have stopped/slowed down?

Grin I’m sorry! Is this real?

CurtainsOpen · 28/04/2019 09:55

Yes.

Next!

We need a diagram.
And a soundtrack.

AnyFucker · 28/04/2019 09:58

The weather has taken a bit of a turn, hasn't it ?

Unrepentingbuzzards · 28/04/2019 10:01

Yes,it's real.

I told my aunt and she said that he was probably annoyed that I'd broken his umbrella - but I think that a)it was already broken and b) the umbrella is his responsibility and it wasn't properly stored or whatever...hence what occured.

He shouldn't have had his umbrella sticking out in such a manner and yes he should have stopped!

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 28/04/2019 10:04

Maybe he had dementia

Biancadelrioisback · 28/04/2019 10:05

What?!

HeartZone · 28/04/2019 10:07

Maybe he’s a bit deaf?

LordPickle · 28/04/2019 10:07

Amazing Grin

SlappingJoffrey · 28/04/2019 10:09

I'd have stolen his trolley.

Qweenbee · 28/04/2019 10:10

Weird, but something to laugh about when you've got over the annoyance of your ripped sleeve.

canveyisland · 28/04/2019 10:11

Probably unwell.

Puffkin · 28/04/2019 10:15

Well being old doesn’t discount you from being a twat so YWNBU.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/04/2019 10:17

What he did was horrible and I’m struggling to justify it. I’m disabled and very ill. This sort of behaviour is the reason I cannot go into busy shops even on my better days. Your story is incredibly frightening for me.

Are you ok?

PregnantSea · 28/04/2019 10:20

Maybe he's a dickhead?

MRex · 28/04/2019 10:21

Your story made me laugh visualising you scampering along behind his trolley (you were going backwards in my imagination too), but only because you didn't fall over nor hurt yourself in any other way. If you had ripped his umbrella then it would have been an accident and not acceptable for him to get grumpy about. He sounds horrible and HWBU.

EleanorReally · 28/04/2019 10:25

on a similar vein I shut the door on someone yesterday!
i held it open for a bit and then let it shut but they hadnt reacted so it landed on them, i apologised and opened it, and they walked through with me holding it still, and they still didnt take the door!
they then proceeded to go behind the til, oops, they obviously worked there Blush

HowardSpring · 28/04/2019 10:28

Weirdly I got my new (flowing, expensive,) linen shirt trapped in the zip of a woman's huge bag as we squeezed past each other at Kings Cross station in the rush hour. We were trapped and the only way for me to untangle myself was to rip my shirt! So it does happen! YANBU OP

Dotty1970 · 28/04/2019 10:32

I seriously would have just taken his umbrella

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 28/04/2019 10:34

Didn't take long for someone to play the Dementia card.

Cherrysoup · 28/04/2019 10:37

I would have grabbed his trolley to stop him or hauled the brolly out. Weird!

echt · 28/04/2019 10:41

I thought this was some Villanelle assassination scenario.:o

AuntieDolly · 28/04/2019 10:45

Perhaps this is how he catches new wives...

Unrepentingbuzzards · 28/04/2019 10:46

Hmmm yeh maybe I should've removed the umbrella from the trolley and tried untangling myself that away - I was kind of bent over at an angle the whole time, which was awkward.

Was also aware that I looked ridiculous the whole time, basically being yanked along at a right angle. And especially the fact that after he had seen the scenario with his own eyes,he knew he was taking me with him!!
