Man wouldn't untrap me from his umbrella!

I was doing some shopping yesterday and somehow managed to get my shirt sleeve caught up between the spoke and material of an elderly man's umbrella.

The umbrella was one of these huge ones and was in his shopping trolley, sticking out,the wrong way up/down. Anyway,we were both stationary when the incident occurred, but when he started moving,he took me with him, with force.

I think that I was unsure of what to do at first,so I went along with him for a bit, trying to get out, but I couldn't. So I said excuse me at least five times, before he turned around.

I explained the situation and then he looked and said that I had torn his umbrella (there was a kind of stretchy hole of material between the umbrella-structure and the material).

I denied it,but apologised, and then he did a massive kind of put-out-but-confined type noise and then just carried on,at the same pace, which was fast/medium, talking me with him basically!

Anyway,I ended up having to rip my shirt to get free! I wasn't going in his direction and I had shopping,so I was sweating!!

Was he being unreasonable? Should he have stopped/slowed down?

Most boring thread ever?!

makingmammaries · 28/04/2019 10:48

How come you didn’t just grab the umbrella? Or have I been out of the UK too long? Walking along behind someone who refuses to release you, since when was that usual?

EleanorReally · 28/04/2019 10:48

no romax

makingmammaries · 28/04/2019 10:49

Cross post

LillithsFamiliar · 28/04/2019 10:49

Maybe he didn't realise you were caught because he was so focused on his umbrella?

Unrepentingbuzzards · 28/04/2019 10:51

He DEFINITELY realised. I showed him and told him. 100% aware.

@echt

Am completely caught up in series 2 of Killing Eve

Sorry, what? There's a season 2? When? How did I miss this?!

shallichangemyname · 28/04/2019 11:15

Cheeky I've just checked and can't find it in catch up!!!

InceyWinceyette · 28/04/2019 11:19

“Didn't take long for someone to play the Dementia card”

It might just have been played with a Wink, given the tone of the thread. Same for the other ‘maybe he...’ suggestions.

echt · 28/04/2019 11:21

I'm in Australia where for reasons that baffle me, series 2 is showing, though not in the UK.

FFS, it's BBC America so why is it not released in the UK yet?

< Am annoyed because I'm being very correct and not discussing it on MN even though I watched ep 4 today> Grrrrrrr.

megrichardson · 28/04/2019 11:25

What a nasty man, and this would have bothered me too, OP.

Incidentally, you have reminded me of a time a long time ago when I was young and was wearing bracelets, and as I was walking past a young man in a pub, my bracelet somehow managed to hook onto the zip on his trousers. It wouldn't disentangle for a bit, and I still remember both of us trying to unhook it, much to the merriment of those around! I wonder what happened to him? Has he had a good life? :)

Meangirls36 · 28/04/2019 11:32

Hold up there's season 2 of killing eve? And a loud SIR! Usually does the trick

Unrepentingbuzzards · 28/04/2019 12:50

Thanks for the Season 2 Killing Eve tip!

What a truly bizarre situation. I can only assume he is deaf / has dementia / in some other way didn’t understand what was happening.

Nope, but yours is the most boring response.

OP, he was a knob. Was it a favourite shirt? I wish you had take his umbrella and chucked it.

Unrepentingbuzzards · 28/04/2019 15:06

It was a nice shirt, yes. Thanks for asking!

I got the clip of my messenger bag stuck through a woman's shopping basket, she wouldn't bloody stop either. I had to forcefully take the basket of her in the end. I looked a right twat

YWBVU to have untangled yourself. Next time keep walking, see how long it takes him to free you. Update once you’re back at his place stood in the coat cupboard.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 28/04/2019 15:25

I thought that Davescoaches! As someone with a dad with fairly advanced Alzheimer’s and an adult DB with LD, I am always amazed and the number of people who excuse bad behaviour on either dementia or autism.

CustardySergeant · 28/04/2019 15:29

YAVVVVU not to have videoed this. Angry

kaytee87 · 28/04/2019 15:31

Why didn't you untangle yourself when he stopped?

puppy23 · 28/04/2019 15:47

I think we need you to harvest CCTV footage of this from nearby shops
