In thinking the undertone to the new M&S advert is verging on inappropriate?

I’m sorry if this has already been posted but this new M&S advert is really not leaving a good taste in my mouth.

Yes it’s all very light-hearted, husband has dinner ready for wife coming in for work and wife phones to say she is planning on going for a few drinks with the girls. I guess they are at least trying, in that respect to not gender stereotype but ultimately wife is guilt tripped into not going for a few drinks with friends because her husband had already made dinner and goes as much to tell her friends that she is coming home...

All said in the annoying and vomit inducing, this isn’t just and old food voice.

Am I looking too deeply into this or is it verging on attempting to normalise manipulative and controlling behaviour?

I saw it yesterday and was very confused why he had cooked and plated up the food before she had even finished work. It'll be stone cold by the time she gets home!

She’s going to have to microwave it when she gets home and then it will be soggy.

It's simply about the fish and chips and M&S hoping people will believe their food is lifechangingly amazing imho

I'd be massively annoyed if any partner of mine DECIDED for me whether or not I could go out. And then proceeded to tell my friends for me!

It probably IS overthinking - but I agree with you OP.

Haha crikey people take everything the wrong way don't they! I read your description before watching the advert and your description is way off!
The only thing off with this advert is the fact that her food will be cold.
He didn't force her at all.

Let's be realistic if she has only just told him her plans as she leaves work then it makes sense he'd already have dinner on as he's home already (totally agree about the early plating up though!). It's standard in our house that as I'm home first I get the dinner on (DP does this on the rare occasion he's home early) so I would have acted the same way if DP had announced half an hour before he was expected home that he was going out. I would tell him his dinner was ready too! Neither of us like waste!

She didn't turn round and say, "Oh but I really want to go" or anything like that. He just told her dinner was all ready and it was going to be tasty. She made the decision herself.

YABU Massively overthinking.

She isn't "guilt tripped" into anything. The food looks tasty so she changes her mind.

If he was whingeing about how he had spent time and effort and money making it, shes always out, doesnt appreciate him etc that would be guilt trip.

You're overthinking it massively.

Yes, you're looking too deeply into it. I'm struggling to work out why you would have thought it anyway.

Here are many threads on MN where the positions are reversed and the man is an inconsiderate arse if he goes out for a drink rather than home to his prepared dinner.

I just had to laugh
Said to my husband that m and s would be the last place we’d go for fish on chips.
We have 5 excellent fish and chip shops along our coastal resort and a couple of fresh fish shops

If I can’t get fresh fish I wouldn’t bother

Also she does say "be home in 5" which explains the fact he's plated up (except for every nurse I know never, ever leaves dead on time but whatever)

It's a stupid advert. Hadn't seen it until this thread tho.

I interpreted that as him saying "she'll never resist fish and chips and will choose to come home" rather than him saying she has to come home.
