Which London travelodge?

Sorry, not an aibu (although maybe I am for considering Travelodge )

DM is paying for me, DH and the DC to have a few days in London in October as a birthday present. I am guessing I need to book the hotel early to get the best price.

We have never been before and don't want to spend DM's money on a pricey hotel as we have never minded travelodge really.

Which is the one with the most conveniant location?

Also, what to do when we get to London?

Covent garden is a good location it depends what you want it to be convenient for though

The Holborn travelodge is pretty much is Covent Garden and is decent for the money (well it was when I stayed there a few years ago). London hotels are notoriously expensive

County Hall is handy for Waterloo/the Eye/ River taxis?

I would go for Premier Inn over Travelodge, they tend to be newer and I have always found the rooms bigger.

What are you planning to do when there as that could make a huge difference.

There’s a travelodge by Covent Garden which is as central as you can get really. Or the ones by Euston and Kings are good for tube access as is Waterloo. But a lot of this will be determined by your plans and which bit of London would be your best base.

If you know your plans / potential area we can probable offer better hotels for the same price or less.

Another shout out for Covent garden, as it is close to everything. I have stayed there several times. It is in a fairly quiet street too.

If that is full/too expensive, the Kings Cross Royal Scot one is OK, AND the Kings Cross Farringdon. Also, the Marylebone one. All borderline shabby, but clean, and convenient for loads of things in London, and usually cheap, with friendly staff. Also, as they are really old buildings, the soundproofing is good. The new ones have bad soundproofing, and you can hear people snoring in the room next to you!

I don’t know about convenience the the newly opened travel lodge plus London city ( think it’s Middlesex Street ) is very nice, high standard. I stay there for work. It’s convenient for the financial district which probably isn’t what you would be looking for, but it’s easy to get where you need to be.

How are you getting there? If driving I would recommend premier inn Greenford. It's free parking and only a five minute walk to the tube station. It's where we usually stay as it's so convenient for us. Also depends what direction you're coming from.

Really liked the Covent Garden /Drury Lane one last week and will definitely go back with the kids. 20 of us from work stayed there last Sunday for an awards do in Mayfair - was only £49 a room but appreciate this was a Sunday eve! 24 hr bar /restaurant a plus but again, appreciate maybe only to our circs! Small rooms but adequate!

My friend has stayed in a Premier Inn near Southwark that she really rated. I've stayed in a Premier Inn in the Harrow area that was very reasonable and had good tube links.

I really don't like Travelodge, and I find the Covent Garden one understaffed and rooms have it been made up by the time I've got back after 1800. The food isn't brilliant and they can't cope with a rush. Premier Inn is much nicer...the one opposite the British Library near St Pancras was very good and I'd stay there again.

Look online eg Booking.com and see what's available, the millennium at Gloucester rd was cheap when we went for instance. Travellodge isn't always the best option

I'd take Premier Inn over Travelodge any day.
I'd recommend the Stratford one. Overlooks the Olympic Park and slap bang next to the tube (Zone 2, Central and Jubilee lines) and Westfield for shopping.

I wouldn't. The food is mediocre, the lifts constantly break down, the stench of rotting food is a constant outside the hotel, and the staff are uninterested in helping.

We stayed in the premier inn at Putney in feb, it was fab, tube is two mins away, the room was a family room and was immaculate. There were four of us in it and it was huge, couldn’t fault it. We paid £128 for three nights over the weekend.

As for what to do, how old are DC?

Natural history and science museum are free and you could easily spend the day on both of them.
My DC loved seeing all the sights so we walked most of it and saw Houses of Parliament, Whitehall and downing st, Buckingham palace etc.

Once we were there we didn’t actually spend a fortune, over Putney Bridge, so a five min walk there is loads of food places to eat.

Don’t stay in the tower bridge one. It’s awful. If your travelling by train, try super break. I got a really good deal on a Russell Square hotel with bed and breakfast and 1st night evening meal with them. Cheaper than travel lodge would have been and very central for fun stuff.

Another vote for Travelodge in Covent garden. Right in the heart of the West end.

However,if you're booking ahead and can get a good price, I'd definitely go for premier Inn, county hall. It's in a great position, on the river and close to the London eye/ dungeons/Southbank/ royal festival hall/Westminster etc plus walkable to lots of places.

Try and get a river facing room.

We’ve always had great stays in Premier Inns. Booking ahead gets you the best deals. We recently stayed at the Old St Premier Inn, 3 of us for one night was £42 because we booked 3 months in advance. It’s only a few stops on the tube from Euston and it’s not far away from Old Street tube, so not far to walk when you’ve got your luggage. We’re never there for long anyway so I’d begrudge paying a vast amount on accommodation unless it was a special occasion.

Pleasant staff, great little place. We always ask for a top floor room.

There’s a premier inn in Beckton which is alright and likely to be in budget. Also 15 to 20 mins to tower gateway (station for Tower Bridge) direct DLR that’s right next to the hotel.

Greenwich is nice - it's got a cafe for breakfast and although not as central Greenwich itself is lovely

I would go for one of the independent budget hotels in Bloomsbury, eg the ones on Cartwright Gardens, most include a cooked breakfast too. Walking distance to Covent Garden, Soho etc or a short tube or bus journey. Also handy for arrival/departure if coming to London by train and arriving at Kings Cross or Euston. But if I did go for a chain I would choose Premier Inn over Travelodge. Just watch out for their dynamic pricing (rises according to demand) model, it means a so called budget hotel can actually be more expensive than a more upmarket hotel on certain dates! Also, booking direct with the hotel can be cheaper.

We checked the price of our PI when we recently stayed and if we’d booked last minute it would have gone up from the £42 we paid to a whopping £92 or thereabouts.

Premier Inn fan here too. We just stayed in the old Street one above, we've stayed in the docklands one many times, Holborn but it tends to be more expensive, there is a new one in London Blackfriars that I want to use as I like the location.

But if you do decide to go with Travelodge, this one is very new and gets the best reviews: Travelodge London City, 20 Middlesex St, London E1 7EZ

A great location if you want to be near the Tower of London area, obviously not as good for West End, but it's central enough to get anywhere fairly quickly by tube.
