Which London travelodge?

StarEclipse · 14/04/2019 11:34

Sorry, not an aibu (although maybe I am for considering Travelodge Grin )

DM is paying for me, DH and the DC to have a few days in London in October as a birthday present. I am guessing I need to book the hotel early to get the best price.

We have never been before and don't want to spend DM's money on a pricey hotel as we have never minded travelodge really.

Which is the one with the most conveniant location?

Also, what to do when we get to London? Grin

A travel lodge is a travel lodge. Look for the one that suits you best in terms of price/location. For London you often find staying a tube ride out of the central zones will save you more, even factoring in the transport cost. If you need to be right in the middle of London though, that won't be an option.

I agree with the London City recommendation (not City Road). Stayed recently and room was great, incredibly quiet, good staff, and we really like the location although I acknowledge it might not be what you'd first envisaged. I like the city any time but I particularly like it at the weekend, there's plenty of good wandering around to be done. We didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on that. Plenty of places nearby.

I prefer premier inn. I've stayed twice at the one next to the London eye. Great location, decent prices and a nice breakfast

MoistMolly

Ah, that's a shame about the Stratford Premier Inn
Clearly gone downhill since I last stayed there.

Mouikey · 14/04/2019 18:22

Premier inn are better and have the good night guarantee (which we used in a London one when there was a noisy neighbour!).

I’ve also stayed in the Easyhotel out Kensington way and a couple of independent large hotels in Kensington purchased through lastminute.

In terms of Travelodge we have stayed at docklands (a bit far out and on for but ok), old Street, one down the road from Waterloo and Covent Garden. Covent Garden was £5 a night years ago!!! It’s very well located. I’m sure we’ve stayed at others when we’ve been to gigs but I can’t remember!!!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/04/2019 18:36

Premier Inn Brixton is right next to the tube. Clean and well run. Brixton itself is very vibrant and quirky; loads of fantastic places to eat and independent shops.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 14/04/2019 18:42

Premier Inn over Travelodge any day of the week, and agree with the pp that the Brixton one is fab! While Brixton itself isn't maybe where you want to be, the tube is two secs from the hotel, and there are loads of great - and cheap - places to eat around and about. It's my favourite London hotel!

Littlebelina · 14/04/2019 18:48

Premier Inn (Waterloo or county hall, only stayed in the former but county hall is slightly closer to the action). You are close to the south bank for restaurants, the south bank market and riverside strolls passed the Tate modern to the borough market, near the London eye and Westminster and only a 15min walk to covent garden.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 14/04/2019 18:49

Do not stay in the Holborn one the main hotel is fine but when I was put there with work they put me in the annexe it was horrific, stains on the carpet only an electric heater which didn't work, one floor above Street level loads of traffic and terrible secondary rather than double glazing. I was meant to be there for a week but moved after one night and that was on a public sector budget.
Try point A hotels they're really nice and you can get a good deal, there's one in Shoreditch and don't forget the night tube now makes places like canary wharf easily accessible and cheaper than Central

We stayed at the Stratford premier inn 2 weeks ago and had no problems at all and the staff we spoke to were lovely. We stayed a Friday night paid £52 which I thought was great, we chose that one because we went to a gig at the o2. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.

ElloBrian · 14/04/2019 20:05

Entirely depends what you want to do in London. Figure that out first then come back and ask about accommodation options.

BikeRunSki · 14/04/2019 20:10

Another vote for Putney Bridge Premier Inn.
We had a huge family room. Bus outside (43??) whizzes you down Fulham Rd to the South Kensington museums in about 20 mins. Potter over Putney Bridge for chain restaurants and local places to eat. Park opposite for energetic little legs. 2 mins walk from tube.

Gravelface · 14/04/2019 21:43

Premier Inn is Southwark is 2 min from tube and absolutely fab for a budget hotel. Nice to be away from the west end (IMO) but quick enough to get in and around. Have fun!!

twilightcafe · 17/04/2019 19:55

I have to say that having the Olympic Park on your doorstep would be a huge bonus, especially when staying in a hotel with children.
There are acres upon acres for them to run about, plus playgrounds, water fountains, the Aquatic centre for swimming, plus you can hire bikes and electric scooters.

twilightcafe · 17/04/2019 19:56

Which is why I'd go for the Premier Inn in Stratford.

Flyinga · 17/04/2019 19:59

I'd go for the new one near Angel or the new one near Liverpool street - the ones with the 'super-rooms'. Nothing super about them, but they are slightly more roomy - e.g. desk space and such.

Flyinga · 17/04/2019 20:05

How about this one?

You'll have to copy the full link as the clicky link didn't work right (only includes half of the link).

Flyinga · 17/04/2019 20:09

If you go for the one near Liverpool Street, it is literally a 5 minute walk to the station, then you're 3 stops from Stratford on the central line, or 5 stops from Oxford Street.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 17/04/2019 20:10

Would recommend Premier Inn also. The one in Chiswick is great and easy to pop in the tube into London.

Flyinga · 17/04/2019 20:11

Chiswick is miles out!

BackseatKnitter · 17/04/2019 20:16

We booked the Covent Garden travelodge for a stay only to get there and be told that they’d overbooked our two rooms. We got moved to Euston even though we were really not happy with that. Absolutely rubbish service.

MerlinsScarf · 17/04/2019 20:23

We've had two bad stays at the Kings Cross Royal Scot ten years apart, but it may have improved since our last try.

Commonplace with travelogue. I remember a thread on here a few months back where someone arrived late at their destination and was going to sleep in the car because they were exhausted and they wanted to move them to a place half an hour or so away, in an unfamiliar location. Can’t remember the outcome, but there were several others who it had happened to, or knew of it happening to someone!

GraceMarks · 17/04/2019 21:20

NOT the Royal Scot - some colleagues of mine stayed there a couple of years ago and they had prostitutes knocking on their room doors offering their services. I always thought they'd cleaned up the Kings Cross area in recent years but obviously not thoroughly enough.

The Covent Garden Travelodge has always been the preferred choice for my organisation because it's central and cheap (for London), but it's definitely more a corporate destination than a holiday one.

I much prefer a Premier Inn. The one in Blackfriars is convenient and clean, although the breakfast arrangements are slightly quirky - I remember having to go to the cafe next door, but got a lovely big bowl of porridge with fruit.
