We live in a downstairs flat and I think I may of disturbed my neighbours and am feeling very embarrassed.
I heard 3 loud knocks from upstairs and realised. Should I apologise in the morning

Me and Dh where chatting and having a giggle feeling awful now.

I'd apologise but more importantly I'd make sure to keep the noise down in the future! It's 3am...

If you really were just chatting the sound must really carry. Can you do anything to improve the sound proofing?

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/04/2019 03:35

Really you need to be pretty silent after 11pm.

Go and apologize and ask if you generally disturb them. Are they nice neighbours?

Worzilgummidge · 11/04/2019 03:39

Nice enough as long as you don't do any wrong I would say.
They are both retired in early seventies.

I am starting to realise that flat living is tricky.

I'd be fucked off if I could hear my neighbors at 3am on a weekday!

PCohle · 11/04/2019 03:44

Do you work shifts? Is there a reason you find it tricky not be fairly quiet in the middle of the night?

BlackCatSleeping · 11/04/2019 03:45

At 3am? fuck! Yes, you should apologise and keep the noise down at night.

Worzilgummidge · 11/04/2019 03:45

I guess I would hate to hear them chatting as well.
We are decent neighbours and haven't had is sure before.
God help them if ever they get a young family with a crying baby.

OP posts:
Worzilgummidge · 11/04/2019 03:46

Issues that should say.

OP posts:
PCohle · 11/04/2019 03:47

I think people are a lot more sympathetic to a crying baby, which can't be helped, than they are to people who are perfectly able to be quiet but are just inconsiderate.

Worzilgummidge · 11/04/2019 03:47

Me and Dh have trouble sleeping sometimes so start chatting, I hadnt realised the noise travels so much.

OP posts:
Worzilgummidge · 11/04/2019 03:48

Some perhaps

OP posts:
BlackCatSleeping · 11/04/2019 03:49

I think noise travels more at night when there is less background noise.

Worzilgummidge · 11/04/2019 03:50

I'm mortified to be honest I hadn't realised.

OP posts:
Worzilgummidge · 11/04/2019 03:51

I will apologise tomorrow

Sounds like your flats don't have much sound insulation. That's annoying - I would expect to be able to have a chat with someone if I was having trouble sleeping without others hearing. Even worse, do they hear other activities.....

Just say sorry - you didn't realise they could hear you talking.

We love in a bottom flat. The neighbours upstairs take the piss sometimes. We have kids but they're at an age to not be too bad now. Where as the young couple upstairs have no excuse.

pissedonatrain · 11/04/2019 04:13

Flat living is tricky especially when the walls are thin like yours seem to be.

Also some people are completely unaware of how loudly they talk, laugh, have their tv on, or walk around.

Had upstairs neighbours who the man would wear his work boots in the house and stomp stomp stomp across the floor.

Lweji · 11/04/2019 04:54

Chatting?
Is that what you call it these days?

Bankofenglandfiver · 11/04/2019 05:13

Surely you know that at 3am you have to keep it down?

HBStowe · 11/04/2019 06:50

Living in flats is so shit for this reason. I used to be able to hear my neighbours chatting and it really kept my up but obviously they weren’t doing anything wrong just having a chat in their own home at 11.30pm!

Is your bedroom floor carpeted? If not a rug may help with sound insulation. Otherwise I guess you will just have to whisper and keep it down during the night.
