Things that are really weird when you think about them

Someone said to me today that balloons are like a plastic bag of someone's breath...

I'd never thought of it like that before and to be honest it made me feel a bit nauseous!

Do you have anymore examples of things that are actually really fucking weird when you think about it?

Dreaming.. especially dreams that have a narrative that you just completely understand and seems to be a continuation of something that has been going on concurrently with your waking life

Imadehimlikethat · 14/04/2019 14:37

I don't normally notice boobs, but the lady last night had very prominent ones arranged in the v of her tight jacket and seemingly not much or no bra. Tbf I think everyone was meant to notice them. Mainly to wonder if she was going to fall out and if we all needed to duck for cover if they sprung free

Crocusflo · 14/04/2019 14:45

Of you have been blind from birth, what do they "think" in? For example, if I think I would like a cup of coffee, a sort of image of my mug and kettle or whatever comes into my mind, if I think of a zoo I usually picture zebras. What happens inside the mind when they speak, when they think of people, of actions? Is there any visualisation at all if they've never seen those things? Is it more scent based or...?

Shutuptodd · 14/04/2019 17:29

@Crocusflo I'm not blind but as I said earlier I dont think in pictures I think in words and sort of by the feeling of things so if I think of a tea I can taste it in my head if that makes sense.

ravenmum · 14/04/2019 17:45

I don't think in proper pictures either - kind of in concepts. A vague colour or shape but no more. I was amazed the first time someone told me they saw really detailed images in their head when they think, and thought they were making it up tbh!

If you don't think in images at all, it's called aphantasia, try googling.

But some blind people can also "see" based on the other non-visual information such as sounds, feeling, vibrations, and apparently get something like an image. I heard about this from a podcast on Daniel Kish, who uses echolocation. I'm not sure, but I think it was a guy who was blind from birth who was saying that he suddenly "saw" something for the first time using echolocation and had his mind blown. Apparently brain scans show they're using the same bit of brain as sighted people.

RocketSurgery · 14/04/2019 19:14

I think in words too. I have a constantly running commentary going on in my head. Everything I see has a line of text running along the bottom, like subtitles.

HolyForkingShirt · 14/04/2019 20:36

I think in concepts too - I'm bilingual but don't think in either language

KeepingTheWormsQuiet · 14/04/2019 20:38

I've breastfed three children and it felt fine at the time, but once I stop I can't help thinking breastfeeding is a bit weird.

Crocusflo · 14/04/2019 20:39

Mine is images with words thrown in. When I think"January" I think of a snowy day, ice blue sky, and also briefly a flash of the word "January" written on a poster from my old Year 1 Classroom. But then, if a lot of people who aren't blind think in words/subtitles, can the same be of profoundly blind people but with braille?

Crocusflo · 14/04/2019 20:40

Ah that's interesting!! Smile thanks

@LEDadjacent
Imagine two TVs, both with the colour settings tweaked slightly differently. It’s like that.
Colour in one eye is slightly warmer, more red tones. In my other its bluer. I prefer the warm tone eye! Much cheerier.

ChopinIn10Minuets · 14/04/2019 22:39

Also, one thought I had (admittedly not sober) - is there a parallel universe out there with people just like us but their natural state is high/drunk, and then they take special substances to feel just how we do normally?

I gather that there are people in this universe who need to do exactly this in order not to struggle at life. They're usually diagnosed with bipolar or ADHD or something of that nature, and take either lithium or Ritalin. Maybe they're refugees from a parallel universe. Grin

BlueGlassesFrames · 15/04/2019 15:22

@BelfastSmile
I get roughly how that works, but take a more complex equation like the quadratic formula. How did whoever came up with that work out the pattern between x and ax^2 + bx + c =0 could always be solved correctly by that specific formula, does that make sense? Like the pattern between 4x + 8 = 24 is easy, x = 4, but how does the human brain see those patterns to establish that formula?

MorrisZapp · 15/04/2019 15:26

'apply the bronzer to parts of your face that normally catch the sun: your nose and the top of your cheeks'

You'd think that after making it eleventy million light years from the sun, the light could find it's way all the way down to your chin.

If the fronts of my thighs get red in the sun, why not the sides? I've always wondered this.

HolyForkingShirt · 15/04/2019 15:58

@BlueGlassesFrames,

The quadratic formula is actually derived from the "complete the square" method.

If you follow through the "complete the square" method but with a, b and c instead of numbers, you end up with the quadratic formula.

Formulas are generally derived from something else that has previously been proven to be true. If you go right back to the beginning you start with the basic axioms of maths, and work your way up from there.

Maths is actually very little numbers/sums...in uni it was just basically Greek alphabet and proving theorems!

That we’ve evolved to sit in offices wifh fluorescent lighting staring at screens all day.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 15/04/2019 16:29

That we’ve evolved to sit in offices wifh fluorescent lighting staring at screens all day.

But we haven’t. Some of us might do it all day but it doesn’t mean that we have evolved to do it.
It gives us headaches, eye strain and makes our backs hurt.

Polarbearflavour · 15/04/2019 17:55

LarryGreysonsDoor - yeah, my post was more than slightly sarcastic!

There is nothing more unnatural than office jobs, many of which (including mine) are pointless.

ALongHardWinter · 15/04/2019 18:21

How planes weighing 80 odd tons or more actually stay in the air.

crosser62 · 15/04/2019 18:22

The fact that while I’m sat here, doing my thing, there are billions of people doing their thing at the same time.
Someone somewhere is having a baby, making a baby, having a life changing operation or having a life changing job interview, is holding their child/brother/sister/mother/father as they die or breath their last. Someone somewhere right now is dying unexpectedly and suddenly or as a relief to those around them.
Someone somewhere has had some fantastic or devastating news.

Injustice. Injustice blows my mind. How adult intelligent people know about things that are radically and fundamentally wrong and just shrug and carry on.

Lolatall · 15/04/2019 18:24

How adult couples share a bed for sleeping.

Like everyone else sleeps alone, but two adults decide they're part of a couple, and they sleep in a big bed together.

All around there are people who have just chosen to share a bed, even when they annoy each other by snoring, quilt hogging or whatever else, it's just what they do.

Savoury99 · 15/04/2019 18:31

Hot tubs/jacuzzi's... A bunch of friends/strangers all sitting semi naked enjoying a bath together.

I don't like baths (I shower) and so agree totally about hot tubs.

TroysMammy · 15/04/2019 18:41

Saunas. Half naked, sweating in a dimly lit shed.

alwaysreadthelabel · 15/04/2019 19:35

The word bed actually looks like a bed from the side.
