Things that are really weird when you think about them

Someone said to me today that balloons are like a plastic bag of someone's breath...

I'd never thought of it like that before and to be honest it made me feel a bit nauseous!

Do you have anymore examples of things that are actually really fucking weird when you think about it?

StealthPolarBear: People are happy with the concept of nothing before birth (consciousness) but not after death. Surely death is the opposite of birth. We 'go' wherever we were a hundred years ago, ie nowhere.

Hmmm, I wish someone had told me that when I was younger. I think that would've made it easier x

ILoveMaxiBondi · 11/04/2019 17:50

Sunbathing
Like if aliens came down and saw us all lined up on sunbeds on the beach, they’d wonder what the hell was going on

I've just watched 2 people brush their teeth on TV. On Poirot to be exact
Dry mouth, all very neat. I've noticed TV teeth brushing before and it amazes me
I look like a rabid dog. Perhaps it's just me and the rest of the world brushes their teeth neatly

Sausages: pig intestines full of, er, pork 🤮

TheSandman · 11/04/2019 17:55

This always struck me as weird.

Sitting in a cinema, watching a film you are watching a film projected up on screen at 24 frames per second. But for the first frame to be removed and the next moved into place a shutter has to come down to block off the light otherwise, as the film is moved forward, you just see a streaky blur.

So it works like this. First frame is shown for 1/48th of a second followed by the shutter coming down for 1/48th of a second followed by the second frame for 1/48th of a second and so on. When the shutter is down the room is totally dark

For half the time you watch a movie you are sitting in a totally dark room.

(This doesn't apply with digital projectors.)

That we drink the breast milk of another species - even as adults

(It’s meant for their babies - who are taken away permanently at a few hours old actually - I emailed Yeo Valley, Tesco and Sainsbury’s- all removed between 24-72 hours old 😭 - I stopped buying it after that.

RedForShort · 11/04/2019 17:57

I've never even understood why men find human boobs attractive. They are just wobbly sacks of fat on our chests. The do absolutely nothing helpful in sex.
I recall reading some bollocks when I was about 15 that's it's because of instinct in wanting to produce offspring and boobs symbolise nourishment for said babies (and if you're interested curvy hips are attractive due being child bearing, and tflat stomachs are appealing because it shows woman not pregnant.)

Pretty sure it was in the Sun, and positioned near a 'page 3 beauty'.

That was the 80s though, when the Sun was an intellectual paper with a philosophical slant.

@StealthPolarBear mind blown 🤯

babyno5 · 11/04/2019 17:58

@Shitshitshitshit your post on graves. My dad/grandmother/uncle/brother and a few more distant relatives have "the best plot in the whole cemetery". Those were my grandmothers words when she bulk bought around 10 lairs many years before she died. She's not wrong and they have the most stunning view out over the Scottish hills. It always brings me great comfort, peace and a little giggle whenever I visit with flowers. I know she probs my bartered to get the best deal too 😂

babyno5 · 11/04/2019 18:00

@OhBetty frequently sheep casings too. Filled with pork which is even more weird 😂

TheSandman · 11/04/2019 18:02

As a male, hopelessly hypnotised, my entire life, by boobs, I think some of the fascination is the endless variety. THEY'RE all different! Combine that with the usual male need to collect stuff....

marciagetscreamed · 11/04/2019 18:05

I often ponder about things like these.

I think to myself "if aliens came down and saw this, they would be like "WTF?!"

Examples -

Shopping tv
Self tanning
Nightclubs
Reality tv
Baby showers
People watching films

TheSandman · 11/04/2019 18:07

I've never even understood why men find human boobs attractive.

Not just men. My gay daughter's whispered, "Ooooh nice tits!" when Anne Hathaway whipped her top off in Brokeback Mountain was an imortant parent/daughter bonding moment.

Alleycat1 · 11/04/2019 18:08

Haven't read the full thread -26 pages! Our planet. Here we are on a ball of rock and earth filled with fire, hurtling round the sun at umpty-diddly thousands of miles an hour yet we get a speeding ticket for 33 miles an hour!!!! I am not bitter
Space - the universe is still expanding, apparently. Say what! Expanding into what?? What was here before the universe? Brain hurts just thinking about it.
As for sex it is a ridiculous concept once hormones start shutting down at the menopause! Most bodily functions are weird if we think too deeply about them.

Shitshitshitshit · 11/04/2019 18:14

babyno5 yes, it was a strange conversation. We're talking about where my beloved grandma is going to be when she dies, not a nice thought. Yet she was so happy that she'd bagged the best plot that I couldn't help but be happy for her too!

My Dad wasn't impressed with his mother suggesting he buy his soon though Grin

Black holes, what the fuck is that all about. People nothing so strange as people.

Shitshitshitshit · 11/04/2019 18:15

Also, why are we so embarrassed when someone hears us use the toilet? Every single person in the world pisses and shits. It's not as if it's a secret that you do as well and yet I'll wait until someone leaves the stall next to me before I'll wee comfortably.

DaisyEmma, if calves are left with their milk-cow mothers, they will die.

Milk cows give far too much milk for one calf. Although I disagree with current dairy practices, (veal), you have to take the babies away.

There are beef cattle where babies stay with the mother.

ShowMeTheKittens · 11/04/2019 18:25

Having babies is bloody weird and so are insides!
I mean you are all tidy and then inside you is this squishy suitcase of works...
Sex- weird. Getting all excited and dribbling on someone due to your squishy suitcase and then afterwards sharing a snack and watching TV. Weird.
I actually find most things weird.

MrsMozartMkII · 11/04/2019 18:26

A line from Star Trek a million years ago - "Humans are just ugly bags of water."

Always makes me giggle.

ShowMeTheKittens · 11/04/2019 18:26

Death is weird. I mean it seriously. you think of the person you loved and they cannot think of YOU. Weird. I miss people.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 11/04/2019 18:29

Dancing (just looks cringey)

Kissing (who invented it!?, animals don’t do it)

Cruise Ships ( never appealed to me, stuck in the same space for days on end, floating on the sea, living for your next meal)

Nail polish ( why do we place so much importance and spend so much time and attention on such a small part of our body?)

DontCallMeShitley · 11/04/2019 18:32

Hair extensions and wigs made from human hair. Most of the hair has come from overseas and is from dead people. Having worked in the industry we used to get hair with the roots still attached.

The Internet.

Huge painted eyebrows and swollen lips

aprarl · 11/04/2019 18:32

There's a theory that kissing is all about seeing if you're a biological match according to www.cracked.com/article_19024_6-factors-that-secretly-influence-who-you-have-sex-with.html.
