Things that are really weird when you think about them

Someone said to me today that balloons are like a plastic bag of someone's breath...

I'd never thought of it like that before and to be honest it made me feel a bit nauseous!

Do you have anymore examples of things that are actually really fucking weird when you think about it?

I came on to say that you were technically inside your grandmother, but can see its already been said.

@ILoveMaxiBondi watch 'after life' on Netflix by Ricky Gervais. Your comment reminded me of it as he questions living when your going through an awful time and why do we have a survival instinct. I've never thought about it before watching it.

Seeing my ICSI twins when they were blastocysts. They were slightly moving. I would love to know which blastocyst was which twin.

Also anaesthesia. It's just so clever. Who found the actual original chemical substance in the first place and how?

BarbieJelly - how do we KNOW dolphins have sex just for fun?? They might have been trying to make a baby-dolphinGrinGrinGrin

Why is it that sometimes you know that you know something, despite not being able to recall it?
So if I wave at someone and my son asks who I waved at, but I can't remember their name or how I know them.. But I know that I know them....how am I so sure that I do know them, if I can't tell my son how I know them?!

blueberrymuffin88 · 10/04/2019 23:43

This thread is awesome! Just place marking to remember some of the best.

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2019 23:46

how do we KNOW dolphins have sex just for fun?

Why else do you think they smile so much?

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 10/04/2019 23:48

Snowdropsiundertrees there was a fascinating documentary on years ago about that. Basically people knew which substances were likely to work and they experimented on themselves and adventurous friends like at dinner parties, getting them high and getting them to lose consciousness.

kateandme · 10/04/2019 23:48

clothes.what made people want to cover parts of their bodies when no other mammals or anything at all does.fashion.decency?protection?warmth and then evolving from that?

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/04/2019 23:49

Time.
Who made time? How did they work it out? I mean how do you invent a second? Then decide that there are 60 of those in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. Why 12s? Why not 10s? Would 10s even work?

It's just weird. And don't get me started on space and black holes effect on time. How can time go faster or slower? Too weird.

kateandme · 10/04/2019 23:52

BitOfFun · 10/04/2019 23:53

On the concept of cooking, I remember reading a children's book with a story about a little cave girl who was clearing the fire they used for warmth, and picked up and tasted a bit of dropped flesh from her family's meal and noticing it was far more delicious than the raw meat they usually ate. Maybe?

I suspect it might be more likely that ancient hunter-gatherers happened upon the charred remains of animals killed in forest fires, and ate them out of desperation.

Nathan Pyle does loads of 'Strange Planet' cartoons along these lines. www.instagram.com/nathanwpyle/

I don’t like to think about the fact I have a skeleton, but when I do, I get a bit freaked out by watching my limbs move and imagining the bones moving.

PregnantSea · 11/04/2019 00:04

Milking a cow and then leaving the milk to go off and then eating it.

Kissing.

Blowing out candles on your birthday.

disneydatknee · 11/04/2019 00:06

Strangers. I see the same people on the bus everyday for work but don't know a single thing about them except where they work based on where they get off the bus! Weirdly there is a guy that I see everyday who looks exactly like my brother from another dimension. Similar. But different. Also, I read something where you are a different version of yourself to every single person you meet. That freaked me out.

ragingchocoholic · 11/04/2019 00:09

If the universe is expanding what is it expanding to and what's on the other side given that it's infinite?

avacadooo · 11/04/2019 00:09

Dolphins have human looking eyes.

Blood types are so weird too like how can something everyone has be different? And only being able to have certain ones if you need blood🤯

NeverSayFreelance · 11/04/2019 00:12

This thread is great!Grin

I agree with sleep. It freaks me out! We lie down, close our eyes, and just... lose all awareness of what is going on?

And then dreams! What are they?!

So freaky.

Lalliella · 11/04/2019 00:19

That we are supposed to be the most intelligent species but we have created an incredibly stressful life for ourselves when we had the choice of doing absolutely anything. That we are the only species that have to work and pay to live on this planet.

BlackForestCake · 11/04/2019 00:22

Isaac Asimov wrote a good book for kids about black holes.

They are not really holes. Basically when a star reaches a certain age it starts to collapse in on itself. It gets denser and denser and smaller and smaller. The denser it gets, the greater its gravitational pull becomes. Eventually not even light – which despite being the fastest moving thing in the universe is still subject to gravity – can escape from it.

If you were unfortunate enough to get close to a black hole, you would get sucked towards it, but you wouldn’t come out the other side or anything, you’d just be instantly crushed to death.

shakenfizzydrink · 11/04/2019 00:29

This thread. I was not expecting this. I mean kissing, how have I never thought about this?!

shakenfizzydrink · 11/04/2019 00:31

Language has always boggled me. The fact I can write random strokes on a page and you lot can understand what I'm thinking from it.

AppleApplePie · 11/04/2019 00:32

Babies and toddlers are so bloody exhausting!! Why do we feel compelled to have them? A cat would be so much less stressful.

I’m sleep-deprived and feeling resentful!!
